In the last ten years Araipama gigas, commonly known as pirarucu, expanded its distribution upstream into the Madeira River rapids where it is not a native species. The invasion was favored by ...escapes from Peruvian fish farms upstream in the Madeira River Basin, where they have been raising pirarucu since the 1970s. Although the Madeira River rapids had formerly represented a geographical barrier to this invasion by limiting floodplain habitats, the construction of the Santo Antônio and Jirau dams in 2011 flooded the two most important falls, replacing the rapids stretch with a lentic or semi-lentic habitat favoring the invasion of A. gigas. Since construction of the dams, fisheries reports have been marked by the decrease of traditional commercial species, coupled with the presence of invasive populations of A. gigas. This example highlights a major emergent threat to artisanal fishing in the Amazonian freshwater system: government policies favoring dam construction and the consequent spread of native fish species used in aquaculture to new regions upstream of waterfalls where they are not native.
Studies about fish assemblages in Brazilian streams have grown in recent years, however, it remains unclear whether this increase is followed by increments in the diversity of addressed topics and ...theoretical frameworks adopted by researchers. We performed a systematic search for Brazilian studies on stream fish assemblages recording study region, publication year, objectives, and spatial and temporal scales adopted. The number of studies is unevenly distributed among regions. Most papers describe the general structure of local fish assemblages and their scientific objectives have not varied through time. Studies have been conducted mainly at small temporal and spatial scales, though the latter is increasing over time. We argue for the need of focusing on recently developed ecological theories and frameworks, and expanding the temporal and spatial scales of studies. These changes will improve regional and local conservation policies, and the visibility of aquatic Brazilian research in the global scientific community.
Bolivia y Brasil comparten una de las cuencas más atractivas y preservadas de la te-giuri amazônica: la cuenca del rio llénez o Guaporé, que escurre tanto sobre el lecho rocoso del Escudo Precámbrico ...Brasilefto como sobre las Hanuras del Beni. Estas influencias hacen que la cuenca del iténez tenga una elevada heterogeneidad de habitats, una fauna acuálica peculiar y un alto valor de conservation. Este patrimonio binacional posée un potencial importante para la conservación de la diversidad regional y cl dcsar rollo sostcniblc participativo de las comunidades locales. El libro contiene un resumen del conotimìento de la cuenca y sus recursos, generado en los últimos 10 anos por un equipo de investigadores bolivianos, brasilefios y de otras nacionalidades. Se presenta una descripeión del medio fisico, así como resultados relevantes sobre la biodiversidad acuática, con énfasis en algas, peces, reptiles y mamíferos. El aporte más notable del libro, adernas de la descripeión ecológica del ecosistema, son las lecciones aprendidas que surgieron de experiências locales sobre la élaboration participativa de herramientas para la gestion de los recursos hidrobiológicos.
Belmont Stream is the main tributary of the Madeira River in the area immediately downriver from the Santo Antonio Fall. Samplings were carried out using gill nets in the mouth of this stream between ...May 2005 and April 2006 and resulted in a list of 74 species. The analyses included values of composition, constancy of occurrence, species richness, abundance, Catch Per Unit of Effort and trophic structure about the ten most abundant species. Characiformes and Siluriformes were dominant order in the samples and Curimatidae (popularly known as "branquinhas") was the most abundant family, represented by Psectrogaster rutiloides (32.57% of the collected specimens), Potamorhina altamazonica (10.72%), and Potamorhina latior (7.79%). The most of species were considered accessory and accidental and richness suggests high values in the rising and high water. Belmont maybe considered as a moderate richness when compared to those found for others Amazon rivers. Detritivorous fishes composed 60% of the assemblage and the constancy of the most abundant species of this family suggests Belmont as an important area to these migratory fishes.
