Asthma is a common chronic respiratory disease that affects millions of people worldwide. Patients with allergic asthma, the most prevalent asthma endotype, are widely considered to possess a ...defective immune response against some respiratory infectious agents, including viruses, bacteria and fungi. Furthermore, respiratory pathogens are associated with asthma development and exacerbations. However, growing data suggest that the immune milieu in allergic asthma may be beneficial during certain respiratory infections. Immunomodulatory asthma treatments, although beneficial, should then be carefully prescribed to avoid misuse and overuse as they can also alter the host microbiome. In this review, we summarize and discuss recent evidence of the correlations between allergic asthma and the most significant respiratory infectious agents that have a role in asthma pathogenesis. We also discuss the implications of current asthma therapeutics beyond symptom prevention.
Microbial communities form an important symbiotic ecosystem within humans and have direct effects on health and well-being. Numerous exogenous factors including airborne triggers, diet, and drugs ...impact these established, but fragile communities across the human lifespan. Crosstalk between the mucosal microbiota and the immune system as well as the gut-lung axis have direct correlations to immune bias that may promote chronic diseases like asthma. Asthma initiation and pathogenesis are multifaceted and complex with input from genetic, epigenetic, and environmental components. In this review, we summarize and discuss the role of the airway microbiome in asthma, and how the environment, diet and therapeutics impact this low biomass community of microorganisms. We also focus this review on the pediatric and Black populations as high-risk groups requiring special attention, emphasizing that the whole patient must be considered during treatment. Although new culture-independent techniques have been developed and are more accessible to researchers, the exact contribution the airway microbiome makes in asthma pathogenesis is not well understood. Understanding how the airway microbiome, as a living entity in the respiratory tract, participates in lung immunity during the development and progression of asthma may lead to critical new treatments for asthma, including population-targeted interventions, or even more effective administration of currently available therapeutics.
ABSTRACT
The morphological diversity of galaxies is a relevant probe of galaxy evolution and cosmological structure formation. However, in large sky surveys, even the morphological classification of ...galaxies into two classes, like late-type (LT) and early-type (ET), still represents a significant challenge. In this work, we present a Deep Learning (DL) based morphological catalogue built from images obtained by the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS) Data Release 3 (DR3). Our DL method achieves a purity rate of 98.5 per cent in accurately distinguishing between spiral, as part of the larger category of LT galaxies, and elliptical, belonging to ET galaxies. Additionally, we have implemented a secondary classifier that evaluates the quality of each galaxy stamp, which allows to select only high-quality images when studying properties of galaxies on the basis of their DL morphology. From our LT/ET catalogue of galaxies, we recover the expected colour–magnitude diagram in which LT galaxies display bluer colours than ET ones. Furthermore, we also investigate the clustering of galaxies based on their morphology, along with their relationship to the surrounding environment. As a result, we deliver a full morphological catalogue with 164 314 objects complete up to rpetro < 18, covering ∼1800 deg2, from which ∼55 000 are classified as high reliability, including a significant area of the Southern hemisphere that was not covered by previous morphology catalogues.
Interacting galaxies provide us with an excellent laboratory for studying a number of physical phenomena associated with these processes. In this paper, we present a spectroscopic and kinematic ...analysis of the interacting galaxy NGC 4656 and its companion tidal dwarf galaxy (TDG) candidate, NGC 4656UV. Using Fabry-Perot and GMOS multislit data, we investigated the possible origin of NGC 4656UV. We found that NGC 4656UV has a low metallicity (12 + log(O/H)∼8.2) and it follows the mass-metallicity relation for normal dwarf galaxies. For NGC 4656, we estimated a flat oxygen abundance gradient of β = -0.027 ± 0.029 dex kpc-1, which suggests the presence of gas flows induced by gravitational interactions. By analysing radial velocity profiles and by fitting a kinematic model of the observed velocity field, we confirm the literature result that NGC 4656 consists of one single body instead of two objects. We estimated a dynamical mass of 6.8^{1.8}_{-0.6}× 109 M⊙ and R of 12.1 kpc from the kinematic model of NGC 4656. Although the observed velocity field is dominated by rotation at large scales (Vmax/σ ≳2.8), important non-rotational motions are present at small scales. Based on these new results, and on previously published information, we propose that NGC 4656 and 4656UV are a pair of interacting galaxies. NGC 4656UV is a companion of NGC 4656 and it does not have a tidal origin. The interaction between the two could have triggered the star formation in NGC 4656UV and increased the star formation in the north-east side of NGC 4656.
In this study, silver nanoparticles on chabazite, clinoptilolite, and clinoptilolite-stilbite natural zeolites were synthesized. The nanomaterials were incorporated into commercial coatings and ...afterward, the antibacterial activity was carried out. The zeolites were exposed to the activation step before the ion-exchange process with the precursor. The optical properties of the nanoparticles were studied through UV–Vis and FT-IR spectroscopy. Morphological and structural parameters were analyzed through TEM microscopy. The particle size of about 2–20 nm with spherical approach morphologies was obtained. Using XPS spectroscopy, the silver oxidation state was determined. The obtained nanomaterials showed antibacterial activity after their incorporation into the coatings. The emergence of antibiotic resistance necessitates not only the identification of new compounds with antimicrobial properties, but also new strategies and combination therapies to circumvent this ...growing problem. Here, we report synergistic activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) of the β-lactam antibiotic oxacillin combined with 7,8-dideoxygriseorhodin C in vitro. Ongoing efforts to identify antibiotics from marine mollusk-associated bacteria resulted in the isolation of 7,8-dideoxygriseorhodin C from a Streptomyces sp. strain cultivated from a marine gastropod tissue homogenate. Despite the long history of 7,8-dideoxygriseorhodin C in the literature, the absolute configuration has never been previously reported. A comparison of measured and calculated ECD spectra resolved the configuration of the spiroketal carbon C6, and 2D ROESY NMR spectroscopy established the absolute configuration as 6s,6aS. The compound is selective against Gram-positive bacteria including MRSA and Enterococcus faecium with an MIC range of 0.125-0.5 μg ml
. Moreover, the compound synergizes with oxacillin against MRSA as observed in the antimicrobial microdilution and time-kill assays. Simultaneous treatment of the compound with oxacillin resulted in an approximately tenfold decrease in MIC with a combination index of <0.5, indicating synergistic anti-MRSA activity.

We present new Gemini imaging and spectroscopic data of the system Arp 314, which consists of a triplet of interacting galaxies. This new imagery exhibits tidal tails and stellar bridges ...between the galaxies' members and confirms the past interactions. Using this data set, we have analysed the physical properties of 22 star-forming regions located in the main disc of these galaxies, as well as in the intergalactic medium. All these regions have emission lines typical of young ages and a couple of them display very high Hα luminosities (LHα ∼ 1040 erg s−1). Using the star-forming regions located in Arp 314-1, we derive its gas-phase oxygen-abundance distribution, which suggests a flatter behaviour than the distribution shown by non-interacting systems. This is in agreement with results obtained for other interacting systems and simulations. The presence of gas flows, as indicated by its complex kinematics, could explain this finding. Most of the star formation in Arp 314-2 is located in a central starburst, where double Hα profiles can be identified, as shown by archival Fabry–Perot data. Additionally, we found that the irregular galaxy Arp 314-3 has a low oxygen abundance. Considering its luminosity, this object has a primordial origin, and it was not formed during the interaction event that this system has experienced.

In this paper we present a thorough discussion about the photometric redshift (photo-z) performance of the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS). This survey combines a seven ...narrow +5 broad passband filter system, with a typical photometric-depth of r ∼ 21 AB. For this exercise, we utilize the Data Release 1 (DR1), corresponding to 336 deg2 from the Stripe-82 region. We rely on the BPZ2 code to compute our estimates, using a new library of SED models, which includes additional templates for quiescent galaxies. When compared to a spectroscopic redshift control sample of ∼100 k galaxies, we find a precision of σz <0.8 per cent, <2.0 per cent, or <3.0 per cent for galaxies with magnitudes r < 17, <19, and <21, respectively. A precision of 0.6 per cent is attained for galaxies with the highest Odds values. These estimates have a negligible bias and a fraction of catastrophic outliers inferior to 1 per cent. We identify a redshift window (i.e. 0.26 < z < 0.32) where our estimates double their precision, due to the simultaneous detection of two emission lines in two distinct narrow bands; representing a window opportunity to conduct statistical studies such as luminosity functions. We forecast a total of ∼2 M, ∼16 M and ∼32 M galaxies in the S-PLUS survey with a photo-z precision of σz <1.0 per cent, <2.0 per cent, and <2.5 per cent after observing 8000 deg2. We also derive redshift probability density functions, proving their reliability encoding redshift uncertainties and their potential recovering the n(z) of galaxies at z < 0.4, with an unprecedented precision for a photometric survey in the Southern hemisphere.

We present new Gemini spectra of 14 new objects found within the H i tails of Hickson Compact Groups (HCGs) 92 and 100. Nine of them are Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) far‐ultraviolet ...(FUV) and near‐ultraviolet (NUV) sources. The spectra confirm that these objects are members of the compact groups and have metallicities close to solar, with an average value of 12+log(O/H) ∼ 8.5. They have average FUV luminosities 7 × 1040 erg s−1 and very young ages (<100 Myr), and two of them resemble tidal dwarf galaxy (TDG) candidates. We suggest that they were created within gas clouds that were ejected during galaxy–galaxy interactions into the intergalactic medium, which would explain the high metallicities of the objects, inherited from the parent galaxies from which the gas originated. We conduct a search for similar objects in six interacting systems with extended H i tails: NGC 2623, NGC 3079, NGC 3359, NGC 3627, NGC 3718 and NGC 4656. We found 35 ultraviolet (UV) sources with ages < 100 Myr; however, most of them are on average less luminous/massive than the UV sources found around HCG 92 and HCG 100. We speculate that this might be an environmental effect and that compact groups of galaxies are more favourable to TDG formation than other interacting systems.
