NuRadioMC is a Monte Carlo framework designed to simulate ultra-high energy neutrino detectors that rely on the radio detection method. This method exploits the radio emission generated in the ...electromagnetic component of a particle shower following a neutrino interaction. NuRadioMC simulates everything from the neutrino interaction in a medium, the subsequent Askaryan radio emission, the propagation of the radio signal to the detector and finally the detector response. NuRadioMC is designed as a modern, modular Python-based framework, combining flexibility in detector design with user-friendliness. It includes a state-of-the-art event generator, an improved modelling of the radio emission, a revisited approach to signal propagation and increased flexibility and precision in the detector simulation. This paper focuses on the implemented physics processes and their implications for detector design. A variety of models and parameterizations for the radio emission of neutrino-induced showers are compared and reviewed. Comprehensive examples are used to discuss the capabilities of the code and different aspects of instrumental design decisions.
Since the start of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic, the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) has rapidly widespread worldwide becoming one of the major global ...public health issues of the last centuries. Currently, COVID‐19 vaccine rollouts are finally upon us carrying the hope of herd immunity once a sufficient proportion of the population has been vaccinated or infected, as a new horizon. However, the emergence of SARS‐CoV‐2 variants brought concerns since, as the virus is exposed to environmental selection pressures, it can mutate and evolve, generating variants that may possess enhanced virulence. Codon usage analysis is a strategy to elucidate the evolutionary pressure of the viral genome suffered by different hosts, as possible cause of the emergence of new variants. Therefore, to get a better picture of the SARS‐CoV‐2 codon bias, we first identified the relative codon usage rate of all Betacoronaviruses lineages. Subsequently, we correlated putative cognate transfer ribonucleic acid (tRNAs) to reveal how those viruses adapt to hosts in relation to their preferred codon usage. Our analysis revealed seven preferred codons located in three different open reading frame which appear preferentially used by SARS‐CoV‐2. In addition, the tRNA adaptation analysis indicates a wide strategy of competition between the virus and mammalian as principal hosts highlighting the importance to reinforce the genomic monitoring to prompt identify any potential adaptation of the virus into new potential hosts which appear to be crucial to prevent and mitigate the pandemic.
The Radar Echo Telescope for Cosmic Rays (RET-CR) is a recently funded experiment designed to detect the englacial cascade of a cosmic ray-initiated air shower via in-ice radar, toward the goal of a ...full-scale, next-generation experiment to detect ultrahigh energy neutrinos in polar ice. For cosmic rays with a primary energy greater than 10 PeV, roughly 10% of an air shower’s energy reaches the surface of a high elevation ice sheet (≳2 ˙km) concentrated into a radius of roughly 10 cm. This penetrating shower core creates an in-ice cascade orders of magnitude more dense than the preceding in-air cascade. Additionally, this dense cascade can be detected via the radar echo technique, where transmitted radio waves are reflected from the ionization deposit left in the wake of the cascade. RET-CR will test the radar echo method in nature, with the in-ice cascade of a cosmic ray-initiated air shower serving as a test beam. In this work, we present the projected event rate and sensitivity based upon a three part simulation using corsika, geant4, and radioscatter. RET-CR expects ~1 radar echo event per day.
Organic production must be carried out following the EU regulations and their protocols. On the contrary, conventional cultivation instead can be carried out using the best agronomic approaches ...available and using the latest innovative resources. Organic cultivation is more widespread in permanent crops (olive and grape crops) than vegetable ones, and even less in protected cultivation systems, due to the high intensity production processes which render the application of organic growing protocols more complex. The comparison between the two systems of cultivation, organic and conventional, is difficult because the two cultivation methods are often carried out in different farms and hence in different environmental conditions. Cultivation using the two methods was conducted in a greenhouse from November to March 2017/2018. Results demonstrated that the total fruit yield zucchini squash in organic cultivation was not significantly different to the conventional one (43.2 Mg ha-1 and 46.4 Mg ha-1, respectively). The agronomic inputs (fertilizers, fungicides, and insecticides) were higher in the organic cultivation system than conventional one. The water use efficiency was higher in the conventional cultivation system (150.6 kg m-3 ha-1) compared to the organic one (147.6 kg m-3 ha-1). No statistically significant differences were found for the fruit number per plant and for the marketable fruit at the end of the growing period. Significant differences for the harvest period were only detected for fresh weight, shape index, firmness, and titratable acidity. In conclusion, this work demonstrated that the organic system required higher inputs compared to the conventional cultivation. The extensive experience of the grower allowed for comparable yields between the two systems.
The quantification of soil carbon dioxide (CO2) flux represents an indicator of the agro-ecosystems sustainability. However, the monitoring of these fluxes is quite challenging due to their high ...spatially-temporally variability and dependence on environmental variables and soil management practices.
In this study, soil CO2 fluxes were measured using a low-cost accumulation chamber, that was realized ad hoc for the surveys, in an orange orchard managed under different soil management (SM, bare versus mulched soils) and water regime (WR, full irrigation versus regulated deficit irrigation) strategies. In particular, the soil CO2 flux measurements were acquired in discontinuous and continuous modes, together with ancillary agrometeorological and soil-related information, and then compared to the agrosystem scale CO2 fluxes measured by the eddy covariance (EC) technique.
Overall significant differences were obtained for the soil CO2 discontinuous fluxes as function of the WR (0.16 ± 0.01 and 0.14 ± 0.01 mg m−2 s−1 under full irrigation and regulated deficit irrigation, respectively). For the continuous soil CO2 measurements, the response observed for the SM factor varied from year to year, indicating for the overall reference period 2022-23 higher soil CO2 flux under the mulched soils (0.24 ± 0.01 mg m−2 s−1) than under bare soil conditions (0.15 ± 0.00 mg m−2 s−1). Inter-annual variations were also observed as function of the day-of-year (DOY), the SM and their interactions, resulting in higher soil CO2 flux under the mulched soils (0.24 ± 0.02 mg m−2 s−1) than under bare soil (0.15 ± 0.01 mg m−2 s−1) in certain periods of the years, according to the environmental conditions.
suggest the importance of integrating soil CO2 flux measurements with ancillary variables that explain the variability of the agrosystem and the need to conduct the measurements using different operational modalities, also providing for night-time monitoring of CO2. In addition, the study underlines that the small-scale chamber measurements can be used to estimate soil CO2 fluxes at orchard scale if fluxes are properly scaled.

ladribine is an oral immune reconstitution therapy for relapsing multiple sclerosis (RMS). Hormonal and immune changes are responsible for the decline of disease activity in the third ...trimester of pregnancy and disease reactivation in the early post-partum period.We investigate the impact of pregnancy on disease activity in women with MS who conceived after cladribine treatment.
Methods
We recruited women of childbearing age with relapsing–remitting MS (RRMS) who became pregnant or not after being treated with cladribine. For both groups, demographic, clinical and radiological data were collected 1 year before and after treatment during a mean follow-up of 3.53 years. We compared disease activity over time between groups using variance analysis for repeated measures.
Results
48 childbearing women were included. 25 women had a pregnancy after a mean of 1.75 years from the first treatment cycle. Women with or without pregnancy did not differ in demographics or pre-cladribine disease activity. No significant differences in disease activity or EDSS worsening were found between women with or without pregnancy.
Discussion
Our findings suggest that pregnancy does not appear to influence disease activity and disability in women previously treated with cladribine; further studies with larger numbers and longer follow-up are needed to confirm this finding.
Irradiation log-files store useful information about the plan delivery, and together with independent Monte Carlo dose engine calculations can be used to reduce the time needed for patient-specific ...quality assurance (PSQA). Nonetheless, machine log-files carry an uncertainty associated to the measurement of the spot position and intensity that can influence the correct evaluation of the quality of the treatment delivery. This work addresses the problem of the inclusion of these uncertainties for the final verification of the treatment delivery. Dedicated measurements performed in an IBA Proteus Plus gantry with a pencil beam scanning (PBS) dedicated nozzle have been carried out to build a 'room-dependent' model of the spot position uncertainties. The model has been obtained through interpolation of the look-up tables describing the systematic and random uncertainties, and it has been tested for a clinical case of a brain cancer patient irradiated in a dry-run. The delivered dose has been compared with the planned dose with the inclusion of the errors obtained applying the model. Our results suggest that the accuracy of the treatment delivery is higher than the spot position uncertainties obtained from the log-file records. The comparison in terms of DVHs shows that the log-reconstructed dose is compatible with the planned dose within the 95% confidence interval obtained applying our model. The initial mean dose difference between the calculated dose to the patient based on the plan and recorded data is around 1%. The difference is essentially due to the log-file uncertainties and it can be removed with a correct treatment of these errors. In conclusion our new PSQA protocol allows for a fast verification of the dose delivered after every treatment fraction through the use of machine log-files and an independent Monte Carlo dose engine. Moreover, the inclusion of log-file uncertainties in the dose calculation allows for a correct evaluation of the quality of the treatment plan delivery.
To evaluate the impact of multidimensional interventions on quality of life (QoL) and depressive symptoms in Brazilian older adults living in the community.
Longitudinal, quasi-experimental study of ...older adults receiving conventional primary health care (PHC). The interventions were designed in response to a first round of data collection and validated through pilot testing in groups of older adults from another community. The validated interventions were then applied to an intervention group (IG). To measure their effect, we used the Medical Outcomes Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) quality of life scale and the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-30).
The sample comprised 118 participants. IG participants exhibited significant improvement in several QoL domains (SF-36): mental health (p = 0.010), general health perceptions (p = 0.016), and physical functioning (p = 0.045). No such improvement occurred in controls (p > 0.050). The prevalence of depression (GDS-30) fell from 36.7 to 23.3% in the IG, despite no significant difference (p = 0.272). Controls also reported a reduction in depressive symptoms, but only from 44.8 to 41.4% (p = 0.112).
This multidimensional intervention was associated with significant improvement in mental health, general health perceptions, and physical functioning in a sample of Brazilian older adults.

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory is a cubic-kilometer neutrino telescope located at the geographic South Pole. Buried deep under the Antarctic ice sheet, an array of 5160 Digital Optical Modules ...(DOMs) is used to capture the Cherenkov light emitted by relativistic particles generated from neutrino interactions. The main goal of IceCube is the detection of astrophysical neutrinos. In 2013 the IceCube neutrino telescope discovered a high-energy diffuse flux of neutrino events with energy ranging from tens of TeV up to few PeV of cosmic origin. Meanwhile, different analyses confirm the discovery and search for possible correlations with astrophysical sources. However, the source of these neutrinos remains a mystery, since no counterparts have been identified yet. In this contribution we give an overview of the detection principles of IceCube, the most recent results, and the plans for a next-generation neutrino detector, dubbed IceCube-Gen2.
