Applications of laser therapy in biostimulation and healing injured tissues are widely described in medical literature. The present study focuses on the effects of laser irradiation on the growth ...rate and differentiation of human osteoblast-like cells seeded on titanium or zirconia surfaces. Cells were laser irradiated with low therapeutical doses at different intervals and the effects of irradiation were evaluated at each time-point. After 3 hours lasered cells showed an enhanced mitogen activity compared to non-lasered control cells and a higher alkaline phosphatase activity, marker of bone formation. At the same time, the mRNA of RUNX2 and OSTERIX, two genes involved in osteoblast differentiation, showed a clear decrease in lasered cells. This reached the lowest value 6 to 12 hours after irradiation, after which the transcripts started to increase, indicating that the laser treatment did promote the osteogenic potential of growth-induced cells. These results indicate that Low Level Laser Treatment (LLLT) stimulates osteogenic cell proliferation.
The CORAL software is widely used by the LHC experiments for storing and accessing data using relational database technologies. CORAL provides a C++ abstraction layer that supports data persistency ...for several back-ends and deployment models, direct client access to Oracle servers being one of the most important use cases. Since 2010, several problems have been reported by the LHC experiments in their use of Oracle through CORAL, involving application errors, hangs or crashes after the network or the database servers became temporarily unavailable. CORAL already provided some level of handling of these instabilities, which are due to external causes and cannot be avoided, but this proved to be insufficient in some cases and to be itself the cause of other problems, such as the hangs and crashes mentioned before, in other cases. As a consequence, a major redesign of the CORAL plugins has been implemented, with the aim of making the software more robust against these database and network glitches. The new implementation ensures that CORAL automatically reconnects to Oracle databases in a transparent way whenever possible and gently terminates the application when this is not possible. Internally, this is done by resetting all relevant parameters of the underlying back-end technology (OCI, the Oracle Call Interface). This presentation reports on the status of this work at the time of the CHEP2012 conference, covering the design and implementation of these new features and the outlook for future developments in this area.

CORAL and COOL are two software packages used by the LHC experiments for managing detector conditions and other types of data using relational database technologies. They have been developed and ...maintained within the LCG Persistency Framework, a common project of the CERN IT department with ATLAS, CMS and LHCb. This presentation reports on the status of CORAL and COOL at the time of CHEP2013, covering the new features and enhancements in both packages, as well as the changes and improvements in the software process infrastructure. It also reviews the usage of the software in the experiments and the outlook for ongoing and future activities during the LHC long shutdown (LS1) and beyond.
Performances of the Gas Gain Monitoring system of the CMS RPC muon detectors after one year of operation at the scaled down closed loop recirculation gas system are presented. The GGM is made of 12 ...single-gap RPC's arranged in a cosmic ray telescope, with charge readout for online monitoring of working point. Preliminary results on sensitivity to gas changes and to environmental variables will be reported on.

The status of the Compact Solenoid Spectrometer (CMS) Resistive Plate Counter (RPC) Gas Gain Monitoring (GGM) system developed at the Frascati Laboratory of INFN (Istituto Nazionale di Fisica ...Nucleare) is reported. The GGM system is a cosmic ray telescope based on small RPC detectors operated with the same gas mixture used by the CMS RPC system. The GGM gain and efficiency are continuously monitored on-line, thus providing a fast and accurate determination of any shift in working point conditions. The construction details and the first result of GGM commissioning are described.
The LCG Persistency Framework consists of three software packages (CORAL, COOL and POOL) that address the data access requirements of the LHC experiments in several different areas. The project is ...the result of the collaboration between the CERN IT Department and the three experiments (ATLAS, CMS and LHCb) that are using some or all of the Persistency Framework components to access their data. POOL is a hybrid technology store for C++ objects, using a mixture of streaming and relational technologies to implement both object persistency and object metadata catalogs and collections. CORAL is an abstraction layer with an SQL-free API for accessing data stored using relational database technologies. COOL provides specific software components and tools for the handling of the time variation and versioning of the experiment conditions data. This presentation reports on the status and outlook in each of the three sub-projects at the time of the CHEP2012 conference, reviewing the usage of each package in the three LHC experiments.
The CMS Barrel resistive plate chambers quality tests are performed at three different sites (Bari, Pavia and Sofia), where equivalent software and hardware tools are used. Data from the first 210 ...detectors are available for a comprehensive analysis. The paper describes the general experimental set-up, the test procedure and the cosmic muon test results. The muon trajectory reconstruction algorithm, used for precise studies, is presented. The criteria to accept or reject a detector are also given. The CMS final-design chambers show an average efficiency greater than 95%.

An original technique has been developed, which, using layers of Gd converter, is apt to make Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) detectors sensitive also to thermal neutrons. This technique presents the ...advantages to be very simple, low cost, and applicable easily also to large surfaces. For the first time such a kind of RPCs have been constructed and exposed to a neutron beam to ascertain precisely their performance. The very encouraging results, together with the fact that they are still far from the theoretical limit achievable in the best configuration, lead us to continue along this path. The idea of putting together a conceptually simple and robust detector, with an easily made neutron converter makes this device potentially full of possible applications both in High-Energy Physics and for industry or social fields.
The pathogenic mechanism of a G44A nonsense mutation in the NDUFS4 gene and a C1564A mutation in the NDUFS1 gene of respiratory chain complex I was investigated in fibroblasts from human patients. As ...previously observed the NDUFS4 mutation prevented complete assembly of the complex and caused full suppression of the activity. The mutation (Q522K replacement) in NDUFS1 gene, coding for the 75-kDa Fe-S subunit of the complex, was associated with (a) reduced level of the mature complex, (b) marked, albeit not complete, inhibition of the activity, (c) accumulation of H2O2 and O2˙- in mitochondria, (d) decreased cellular content of glutathione, (e) enhanced expression and activity of glutathione peroxidase, and (f) decrease of the mitochondrial potential and enhanced mitochondrial susceptibility to reactive oxygen species (ROS) damage. No ROS increase was observed in the NDUFS4 mutation. Exposure of the NDUFS1 mutant fibroblasts to dibutyryl-cAMP stimulated the residual NADH-ubiquinone oxidoreductase activity, induced disappearance of ROS, and restored the mitochondrial potential. These are relevant observations for a possible therapeutical strategy in NDUFS1 mutant patients.
