The antiferroelectricity in HfZrO 2 (HZO) annealed at 600 °C with an abrupt turn ON of FET characteristics with SSmin = 23 mV/dec and SSavg = 50 mV/dec over 4 decades of IDS is demonstrated. The near ...non-hysteresis is achieved with an antiferroelectric-like HZO due to a small remanent polarization and a coercive field. A feasible concept of coupling the antiferroelectric and ferroelectric type HZO are used for low-power electronics and the memory applications, respectively.
The aim of this study was to chemically characterize the fine particulate matter (PM2.5) at a subtropical forest in East Asia under the influences of anthropogenic and biogenic sources and a complex ...topographic setting. Four seasonal campaigns were conducted at the Xitou Experimental Forest in central Taiwan from the winter of 2013 to the autumn of 2014. The results indicated that the ambient levels and chemical features of PM2.5 exhibited pronounced seasonal variations. Non-sea-salt sulfate (nss-SO42-) constituted the major component of PM2.5, followed by ammonium (NH4+) and nitrate (NO3−) during winter, summer and autumn. However, it was revealed that the mass fraction of NO3− increased to be comparable with that of nss-SO42- in springtime. The mass contribution of secondary organic carbon (SOC) to PM2.5 peaked in summer (13.2%), inferring the importance of enhanced photo-oxidation reactions in SOC formation. Diurnal variations of O3 and SO2 coincided with each other, suggesting the transport of aged pollutants from distant sources, whereas CO and NOx were shown to be under the influences of both local and regional sources. Notably high sulfur oxidation ratio (SOR) and nitrogen oxidation ratio (NOR) were observed, which were 0.93 ± 0.05 and 0.39 ± 0.20, respectively. Precursor gases (i.e. SO2 and NOx) could be converted to sulfate and nitrate during the transport by the uphill winds. Furthermore, due to the high relative humidity at Xitou, enhanced aqueous-phase and/or heterogeneous reactions could further contribute to the formation of sulfate and nitrate at the site. This study demonstrated the significant transport of urban pollutants to a subtropical forest by the mountain-valley circulations as well as the long-range transport from regional sources, whereas the implications of which for regional climate change necessitated further investigation.

Four measurement campaigns were conducted at Xitou Experimental Forest in central Taiwan to characterize the fine particulate matter (PM2.5) at a high-elevation subtropical forest in East Asia where pollutants were effectively transported by mountain-valley circulations, and long-range transport from regional sources.
This study addressed the selection of the rhizospheric microbial community from the bulk soil reservoir under agricultural management of soybean in Amazon forest soils. We used a shotgun metagenomics ...approach to investigate the taxonomic and functional diversities of microbial communities in the bulk soil and in the rhizosphere of soybean plants and tested the validity of neutral and niche theories to explain the rhizosphere community assembly processes. Our results showed a clear selection at both taxonomic and functional levels operating in the assembly of the soybean rhizosphere community. The taxonomic analysis revealed that the rhizosphere community is a subset of the bulk soil community. Species abundance in rhizosphere fits the log-normal distribution model, which is an indicator of the occurrence of niche-based processes. In addition, the data indicate that the rhizosphere community is selected based on functional cores related to the metabolisms of nitrogen, iron, phosphorus and potassium, which are related to benefits to the plant, such as growth promotion and nutrition. The network analysis including bacterial groups and functions was less complex in rhizosphere, suggesting the specialization of some specific metabolic pathways. We conclude that the assembly of the microbial community in the rhizosphere is based on niche-based processes as a result of the selection power of the plant and other environmental factors.
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death worldwide, with metastasis underlying majority of related deaths. Angiomotin (AMOT), a scaffold protein, has been shown to interact with oncogenic ...Yes-associated protein/transcriptional co-activator with a PDZ-binding motif (YAP/TAZ) proteins, suggesting a potential role in tumor progression. However, the functional role of AMOT in lung cancer remains unknown. This study aimed to identify the patho-physiological characteristics of AMOT in lung cancer progression. Results revealed that AMOT expression was significantly decreased in clinical lung cancer specimens. Knockdown of AMOT in a low metastatic CL1-0 lung cancer cell line initiated cancer proliferation, migration, invasion and epithelial-mesenchymal transition. The trigger of cancer progression caused by AMOT loss was transduced by decreased cytoplasmic sequestration and increased nuclear translocation of oncogenic co-activators YAP/TAZ, leading to increased expression of the growth factor, Cyr61. Tumor promotion by AMOT knockdown was reversed when YAP/TAZ or Cyr61 was absent. Further, AMOT knockdown increased the growth and spread of Lewis lung carcinoma in vivo. These findings suggest that AMOT is a crucial suppressor of lung cancer metastasis and highlight its critical role as a tumor suppressor and its potential as a prognostic biomarker and therapeutic target for lung cancer.
Background: Mutations of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) gene in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients predict the patients who will respond to EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) ...treatment. A recent study has suggested that 33% of NSCLC showed primary tumor/metastasis discordance of EGFR expression by immunohistochemistry analysis. We intended to find out whether the EGFR mutations of primary lung cancers are concordant to that of corresponding metastatic tumors. Materials and methods: We analyzed EGFR exons 18–21 from paired primary and metastatic tumors in 67 lung cancer patients who had not received TKI before tissues were sampled. Results: Using the direct sequencing method, 9 of 18 (50%) patients with EGFR mutation-positive primary lung tumors had lost the mutations in metastases. For 26 patients who were EGFR mutation positive in the metastatic tumors, 17 (65%) were negative in the primary tumors. We analyzed these paired tissues with discrepant EGFR mutations by the Scorpion Amplified Refractory Mutation System assay. Finally, the discordant rate reached 27% (18 of 67 cases). Conclusion: EGFR mutations in primary lung tumors do not always reflect the same situation in metastases. Analysis of EGFR mutations in the primary lung tumor would be inadequate for planning the use of TKI for advanced NSCLC.
Summary
Background
Cirrhotic patients admitted to intensive care units (ICUs) have high mortality rates. The Chronic Liver Failure–Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (CLIF‐SOFA) score, a modified ...Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score, is a newly developed scoring system exclusively for patients with end‐stage liver disease.
Aim
To externally validate the efficacy of the CLIF‐SOFA score and evaluate other scoring systems for 6‐month mortality in critically ill cirrhotic patients.
Methods
This study prospectively recorded and analysed the data for 30 demographical parameters and some clinical characteristic variables on day 1 of 250 cirrhotic patients admitted to a 10‐bed specialised hepatogastroenterology ICU in a 2000‐bed tertiary care referral hospital during the period from September 2010 to August 2013.
Results
The overall in‐hospital and 6‐month mortality rate were 58.8% (147/250) and 78.0% (195/250), respectively. Liver diseases were mostly attributed to hepatitis B virus infection (32%). Multiple Cox logistic regression hazard analysis revealed that Glasgow coma scale, both the CLIF‐SOFA and Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation III (ACPACHE III) scores determined on the first day of ICU admission were independent predictors of 6‐month mortality. Analysis of the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve revealed that the CLIF‐SOFA score had the best discriminatory power (0.900 ± 0.020). Moreover, the cumulative 6‐month survival rates differed significantly for patients with a CLIF‐SOFA score ≤11 and those with a CLIF‐SOFA score >11 on the ICU admission day.
Conclusion
Both CLIF‐SOFA and APACHE III scores are excellent prognosis evaluation tools for critically ill cirrhotic patients.
Objectives
Frailty is a significant public health and clinical issue among the elder population. This study aimed to evaluate the nutritional status and renal function in relation to frailty among ...elderly Taiwanese.
Design
We administered community-based health surveys to the elder population in Chiayi County, Taiwan, from 2017 to 2019.
Measurements
We measured nutritional status (including serum albumin and total protein levels), renal function (including serum blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, urine protein, and urine creatinine levels), hand grip strength (GS) and calculated appendicular muscle mass (AMM).
Results
The study recruited 3739 participants (2139 women). Participants of both sexes with normal GS had higher serum albumin levels and lower urine protein/creatinine ratios (UPCRs). For the men with normal and weak GS, serum albumin levels were 4.15 ± 0.2 and 4.10 ± 0.2 g/dL (p < 0.01), and UPCRs were 123.1 ± 219.6 and 188.7 ± 366.2 (p < 0.001), respectively. GS was positively correlated with serum albumin and urine creatinine levels (r = 0.136 and 0.177, both p < 0.001). AMM was also positively correlated with serum albumin and urine creatinine levels (r = 0.078 and 0.091, both p < 0.001). In the multivariate regression model, for every 1 g/dL increase in serum albumin level, there was a 1.9 and 1.7-kg increase in GS for men and women (p < 0.05 and p < 0.01), respectively. The final model for predicting GS included age, albumin, BUN, and UPCR (urine creatinine for women) which presented a variance of 22.1% and 13.8%, respectively.
Conclusion
Proper dietary nutritional intake and maintaining renal function are key elements for preventing frailty among elder population in Taiwan.
Abstract
Transport and transformation of urban air pollutants are among the major factors driving the changes in the atmospheric composition in the downwind rural/remote areas of a megacity. Here, we ...assess the impacts of urban air pollution in a subtropical forest through characterization of the organic markers in submicron aerosol particles. The aerosol samples were collected and analyzed using TD-PTR-ToF-MS, where 163 ions were detected. The concentration of these extracted ions accounts for 83% of the mass of submicron organic aerosols, which are accordingly characterized by a median formula of C

. Molecular speciation indicates that urban and biomass burning pollution contributed substantially to the budget of organic aerosols, which were enhanced particularly by the liquid water content and acidity of the aerosols. Our results evidence that the footprint of urban air pollution was extended to its downwind forested areas and caused changes in the concentration and composition of submicron aerosols.
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are thought to control tumor metastasis through direct interactions with target genes. Thyroid hormone (T3) and its receptor (TR) are involved in cell growth and cancer ...progression. However, the issue of whether miRNAs participate in T3/TR-mediated tumor migration is yet to be established. In the current study, we demonstrated that T3/TR negatively regulates mature miR-17 transcript expression, both in vitro and in vivo. Luciferase reporter and chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) assays localized the regions responding to TR-mediated repression to positions -2234/-2000 of the miR-17 promoter sequence. Overexpression of miR-17 markedly inhibited cell migration and invasion in vitro and in vivo, mediated via suppression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP)-3. Moreover, p-AKT expression was increased in miR-17-knockdown cells that led to enhanced cell invasion, which was blocked by LY294002. Notably, low miR-17 expression was evident in highly metastatic cells. The cell migration ability was increased by T3, but partially reduced upon miR-17 overexpression. Notably, TRα1 was frequently upregulated in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) samples and associated with low overall survival (P=0.023). miR-17 expression was significantly negatively associated with TRα1 (P=0.033) and MMP3 (P=0.043) in HCC specimens. Data from our study suggest that T3/TR, miR-17, p-AKT and MMP3 activities are interlinked in the regulation of cancer cell metastasis.
The Auger recombination is recently proposed as one of the possible origins for the deteriorated internal quantum efficiency of InGaN light-emitting diodes. The Auger recombination behavior is quite ...different under widely varied Auger coefficients. The effect of Auger coefficient on the efficiency and output power is investigated numerically. The simulation results indicate that the Auger recombination with large Auger coefficient greatly decreases the efficiency in the whole current range under study. It is found that the electron current leakage and nonuniform hole distribution are the possible mechanisms responsible for the efficiency droop at high injection current.
