The astrophysical sources of the extraterrestrial, very high-energy neutrinos detected by the IceCube collaboration remain to be identified. Gamma-ray (γ-ray) blazars have been predicted to yield a ...cumulative neutrino signal exceeding the atmospheric background above energies of 100 TeV, assuming that both the neutrinos and the γ-ray photons are produced by accelerated protons in relativistic jets. As the background spectrum falls steeply with increasing energy, the individual events with the clearest signature of being of extraterrestrial origin are those at petaelectronvolt energies. Inside the large positional-uncertainty fields of the first two petaelectronvolt neutrinos detected by IceCube, the integrated emission of the blazar population has a sufficiently high electromagnetic flux to explain the detected IceCube events, but fluences of individual objects are too low to make an unambiguous source association. Here, we report that a major outburst of the blazar PKS B1424-418 occurred in temporal and positional coincidence with a third petaelectronvolt-energy neutrino event (HESE-35) detected by IceCube. On the basis of an analysis of the full sample of γ-ray blazars in the HESE-35 field, we show that the long-term average γ-ray emission of blazars as a class is in agreement with both the measured all-sky flux of petaelectronvolt neutrinos and the spectral slope of the IceCube signal. The outburst of PKS B1424-418 provides an energy output high enough to explain the observed petaelectronvolt event, suggestive of a direct physical association.
The existing radio and X-ray flux correlation for Galactic black holes in the hard and quiescent states relies on a sample which is mostly dominated by two sources (GX 339−4 and V404 Cyg) observed in ...a single outburst. In this paper, we report on a series of radio and X-ray observations of the recurrent black hole GX 339−4 with the Australia Telescope Compact Array, the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer and the Swift satellites. With our new long-term campaign, we now have a total of 88 quasi-simultaneous radio and X-ray observations of GX 339−4 during its hard state, covering a total of seven outbursts over a 15-yr period. Our new measurements represent the largest sample for a stellar mass black hole, without any bias from distance uncertainties, over the largest flux variations and down to a level that could be close to quiescence, making GX 339−4 the reference source for comparison with other accreting sources (black holes, neutrons stars, white dwarfs and active galactic nuclei). Our results demonstrate a very strong and stable coupling between radio and X-ray emission, despite several outbursts of different nature and separated by a period of quiescence. Rad confirms the non-linear coupling between the jet and the inner accretion flow powers and better defines the standard correlation track in the radio-X-ray diagram for stellar mass black holes. We further note epochs of deviations from the fit that significantly exceed the measurement uncertainties, especially during the time of formation and destruction of the self-absorbed compact jets. The jet luminosity could appear brighter (up to a factor of 2) during the decay compared to the rise for a given X-ray luminosity, possibly related to the compact jets. We furthermore connect the radio/X-ray measurements to the near-infrared/X-ray empirical correlation in GX 339−4, further demonstrating a coupled correlation between these three frequency ranges. The level of radio emission would then be tied to the near-infrared emission, possibly by the evolution of the broad-band properties of the jets. We further incorporated our new data of GX 339−4 in a more global study of black hole candidates strongly supporting a scale invariance in the jet-accretion coupling of accreting black holes, and confirms the existence of two populations of sources in the radio/X-ray diagram.
In the past two decades, high-amplitude electromagnetic outbursts have been detected from dormant galaxies and often attributed to the tidal disruption of a star by the central black hole
. X-ray ...emission from the Seyfert 2 galaxy GSN 069 (2MASX J01190869-3411305) at a redshift of z = 0.018 was first detected in July 2010 and implies an X-ray brightening by a factor of more than 240 over ROSAT observations performed 16 years earlier
. The emission has smoothly decayed over time since 2010, possibly indicating a long-lived tidal disruption event
. The X-ray spectrum is ultra-soft and can be described by accretion disk emission with luminosity proportional to the fourth power of the disk temperature during long-term evolution. Here we report observations of quasi-periodic X-ray eruptions from the nucleus of GSN 069 over the course of 54 days, from December 2018 onwards. During these eruptions, the X-ray count rate increases by up to two orders of magnitude with an event duration of just over an hour and a recurrence time of about nine hours. These eruptions are associated with fast spectral transitions between a cold and a warm phase in the accretion flow around a low-mass black hole (of approximately 4 × 10
solar masses) with peak X-ray luminosity of about 5 × 10
erg per second. The warm phase has kT (where T is the temperature and k is the Boltzmann constant) of about 120 electronvolts, reminiscent of the typical soft-X-ray excess, an almost universal thermal-like feature in the X-ray spectra of luminous active nuclei
. If the observed properties are not unique to GSN 069, and assuming standard scaling of timescales with black hole mass and accretion properties, typical active galactic nuclei with higher-mass black holes can be expected to exhibit high-amplitude optical to X-ray variability on timescales as short as months or years
.
In recent years, much effort has been devoted to unravelling the connection between the accretion flow and the jets in accreting compact objects. In the present work, we report new constraints on ...these issues, through the long-term study of the radio and X-ray behaviour of the black hole candidate H1743−322. This source is known to be one of the 'outliers' of the universal radio/X-ray correlation, i.e. a group of accreting stellar-mass black holes displaying fainter radio emission for a given X-ray luminosity than expected from the correlation. Our study shows that the radio and X-ray emission of H1743−322 are strongly correlated at high luminosity in the hard spectral state. However, this correlation is unusually steep for a black hole X-ray binary: b∼ 1.4 (with L
radio∝Lb
X). Below a critical luminosity, the correlation becomes shallower until it rejoins the standard correlation with b∼ 0.6. Based on these results, we first show that the steep correlation can be explained if the inner accretion flow is radiatively efficient during the hard state, in contrast to what is usually assumed for black hole X-ray binaries in this spectral state. The transition between the steep and the standard correlation would therefore reflect a change from a radiatively efficient to a radiatively inefficient accretion flow. Finally, we investigate the possibility that the discrepancy between 'outliers' and 'standard' black holes arises from the outflow properties rather than from the accretion flow.
We report on updated radio imaging observations of the radio remnant of SN 1987A at 9 GHz, taken with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), covering a 25 yr period (1992-2017). We use Fourier ...modeling of the supernova remnant to model its morphology, using both a torus model and a ring model, and find that both models show an increasing flux density and have shown a continuing expansion of the remnant. As found in previous studies, we find that the torus model most accurately fits our data and has shown a change in the remnant expansion at day 9300 210 from 2300 200 km s−1 to 3610 240 km s−1. We have also seen an increase in brightness in the western lobe of the remnant, although the eastern lobe is still the dominant source of emission, unlike what has been observed at contemporary optical and X-ray wavelengths. We expect to observe a reversal in this asymmetry by the year ∼2020, and we note that the southeastern side of the remnant is now beginning to fade, as has also been seen in optical and X-ray data. Our data indicate that high-latitude emission has been present in the remnant from the earliest stages of the shock wave interacting with the equatorial ring around day 5000. However, we find that the emission has become increasingly dominated by the low-lying regions by day 9300, overlapping with the regions of X-ray emission. We conclude that the shock wave is now leaving the equatorial ring, exiting first from the southeast region of the remnant, and is reaccelerating as it begins to interact with the circumstellar medium beyond the dense inner ring.

We present the results of millimetre (33 and 35 GHz) and centimetre (2.1, 5.5, and 9.0 GHz) wavelength observations of the neutron star X-ray binary Circinus X-1, using the Australia Telescope ...Compact Array. We have used advanced calibration and de-convolution algorithms to overcome multiple issues due to intrinsic variability of the source and direction-dependent effects. The resulting centimetre and millimetre radio maps show spatially resolved jet structures from sub-arcsecond to arcminute angular scales. They represent the most detailed investigation to date of the interaction of the relativistic jet from the X-ray binary with the young supernova remnant in which it is embedded. Comparison of projected jet axes at different wavelengths indicates significant rotation of the jet axis with increasing angular scale. This either suggests interactions of the jet material with surrounding media, creating bends in the jet flow path, or jet precession. We explore the latter hypothesis by successfully modelling the observed jet path using a kinematic jet model. If precession is the right interpretation and our modelling is correct, the best-fitting parameters describe an accreting source with mildly relativistic ejecta (|$v$| = 0.5c), inclined close to the plane of the sky (i = 86°) and precessing over a 5-yr period.
We report on the formation and evolution of two large-scale, synchrotron-emitting jets from the black hole candidate H1743-322 following its reactivation in 2003. In 2003 November, after the end of ...its 2003 outburst, we noticed, in observations with the Australia Telescope Compact Array, the presence of a new and variable radio source about 4."6 to the east of H1743-322 that was later found to move away from H1743-322. In 2004 February, we detected a radio source to the west of H1743-322, symmetrically placed relative to the eastern jet. In 2004, follow-up X-ray observations with Chandra led to the discovery of X-ray emission associated with the two radio sources. This likely indicates that we are witnessing the interaction of relativistic jets from H1743-322 with the interstellar medium, causing in situ particle acceleration. The spectral energy distribution of the jets during the decay phase is consistent with a classical synchrotron spectrum of a single electron distribution from radio up to X-rays, implying the production of very high energy (>10 TeV) particles in those jets. We discuss the jet kinematics, highlighting the presence of a significantly relativistic flow in H1743-322 almost a year after the ejection event.
We report on simultaneous radio and X-ray observations of the black hole candidate XTE J1650-500 during the course of its 2001-2002 outburst. The scheduling of the observations allowed us to sample ...the properties of XTE J1650-500 in different X-ray spectral states, namely, the hard state, the steep power-law state, and the thermal dominant state, according to the recent spectral classification of McClintock & Remillard. The hard state is consistent with a compact jet dominating the spectral energy distribution at radio frequencies; however, the current data suggest that its contribution as direct synchrotron emission at higher energies may not be significant. In that case, XTE J1650-500 may be dominated by Compton processes (either inverse Comptonization of thermal disk photons and/or synchrotron self-Compton radiation from the base of the compact jet) in the X-ray regime. We surprisingly detect a faint level of radio emission in the thermal dominant state that may be consistent with the emission of previously ejected material interacting with the interstellar medium, similar (but on a smaller angular scale) to what was observed in XTE J1550-564 by Corbel and coworkers. Based on the properties of radio emission in the steep power-law state of XTE J1650-500 and taking into account the behavior of other black hole candidates (namely, GX 339-4, XTE J1550-564, and XTE J1859+226) while in the intermediate and steep power-law states, we are able to present a general pattern of behavior for the origin of radio emission in these two states that could be important for understanding the accretion-ejection coupling very close to the black hole event horizon.
The IceCube Collaboration has announced the discovery of a neutrino flux in excess of the atmospheric background. Owing to the steeply falling atmospheric background spectrum, events at PeV energies ...most likely have an extraterrestrial origin. We present the multiwavelength properties of the six radio-brightest blazars that are positionally coincident with these events using contemporaneous data of the TANAMI blazar sample, including high-resolution images and spectral energy distributions. Assuming the X-ray to γ-ray emission originates in the photoproduction of pions by accelerated protons, the integrated predicted neutrino luminosity of these sources is high enough to explain the two detected PeV events.
Galactic black hole binaries produce powerful outflows which emit over almost the entire electromagnetic spectrum. Here, we report the first detection with the Herschel observatory of a variable ...far-infrared source associated with the compact jets of the black hole transient GX 339−4 during the decay of its recent 2010-2011 outburst, after the transition to the hard state. We also outline the results of very sensitive radio observations conducted with the Australia Telescope Compact Array, along with a series of near-infrared, optical (OIR) and X-ray observations, allowing for the first time the re-ignition of the compact jets to be observed over a wide range of wavelengths. The compact jets first turn on at radio frequencies with an optically thin spectrum that later evolves to an optically thick synchrotron emission. An OIR reflare is observed about 10 d after the onset of radio and hard X-ray emission, likely reflecting the necessary time to build up enough density, as well as to have acceleration (e.g. through shocks) along an extended region in the jets. The Herschel measurements are consistent with an extrapolation of the radio inverted power-law spectrum, but they highlight a more complex radio to OIR spectral energy distribution for the jets.
