Slovenska muzikologija Matjaža Barba, četudi obljublja le kratek prelet, je bistveno več kot le to. Je očrt tega, kar se je s slovensko muzikologijo v zadnjih 800 letih dogajalo, hkrati pa je tudi ...izjemen vir podatkov in zanimivih dejstev, ki so bila do sedaj malo poznana. Avtor že v predgovoru napiše, da se njegova razprava ne osredotoča na muzikologijo z vidika točke nič (tj. njeno umestitvijo med sedem muz Filozofske fakultete), ampak da želi preučiti njene izvire. Začne v 14. stoletju, pri cistercijanih, v Stični, centru sveta za nastajajoči osnutek slovenskega naroda.
Literary theory puts memoirs on the intersection between literary and semi-literary genres, which makes them specific by definition. But when we talk about memoirs of diplomats, they are even more ...specific, as they are often the only source describing events that took place in diplomatic intercourse. This article analyses the significance of writing memoirs as seen by diplomats through interviews with ten Slovenian diplomats. The interviewees agree that memoirs need to be written, not only to shed light on events that took place in diplomacy, but also because they can be important literary works and contribute to the spread of diplomatic terminology.
The article discusses the main characteristics of Slovenia's consular activities during the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic (spring 2020). The results of the analysis bring us to three research ...outcomes. First, consular assistance at the EU level is still under the 'coordinated approach', lacking in efficiency. Second, in times of crisis management, what matters are good state-to-state connections and the people you know. Official channels are too slow and not effective. Third, high politics marginally influence consular assistance (understood here as low politics), meaning that open political questions usually do not hinder consular cooperation (as especially seen in the example of Slovenia and Croatia helping each other).
The aim of this article is to study the translation of Polish literature into Slovene to shed light on Polish literary (and cultural) diplomacy in Slovenia. Being acquainted with the culture of ...another nation is an important factor in forming closer political and economic relations, since literature is a source of “soft power,” which relies on attraction rather than on the power of explicit or implicit coercion. Using quantitative analysis, we surveyed how many and which works were translated from Polish into Slovene between 1865 and 2021. Our qualitative analysis based on semi-structured interviews with Slovene translators further explores who chose the texts and decided what to translate from Polish into Slovene. The key finding of the article is that strong cultural cooperation (in our case, translation of Polish literature into Slovene) can be an advantageous platform for enhancing and strengthening political and economic relations between the two countries, as well as for fostering better understanding between the two nations.
From its early stages, the discussion on Slovenian independence included the clear ambition to join the European Community/Union. This objective was achieved in 2004. The support of membership was ...very high among Slovenians and has remained so ever since. Various domestic and external factors have affected the level of public support, but the country has never questioned its belonging to the EU. In fact, as the authors show, trust in EU policymaking has often been above EU average. There were instances when Slovenia expected a higher level of support from European institutions, but among all social groups, from politicians to businesspeople to NGOs to the wider public, there was no real alternative. This, however, does not suggest that understanding of the intricate functioning of the EU is at a sufficiently high level that the small country could effectively shape EU policies.
The concept of differentiated integration (DI) is practically invisible in Slovenian politics. The analysis showed that the key words associated with DI are seldom used in parliamentary debates, ...coalition programmes or prime ministerial speeches. This suggests that the issue of DI is more a topic of academic discussion than of daily politics. While the low salience of DI in Slovenian political debates makes it hard to establish governmental positions in detail, the common thread throughout Slovenian foreign policy from independence in 1991 onwards has been that a strong and united EU is of key importance for Slovenia. The few instances where wording related to DI models was used reflect a concern about a multi-speed Europe, especially a fear that a multi-tier EU would mean fewer opportunities for future Slovenian governments and in general, fewer opportunities for smaller and/or less developed countries.
The article analyses the role and position of music at ceremonial sessions of the National Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia. It outlines three main findings: (a) ceremonial sessions of the ...National Assembly are largely accompanied by a musical programme; (b) music is used at ceremonial sessions of the National Assembly in some sort of supporting (cultural) role; (c) the group in charge of events, which is the chief advisor to the parliamentary speaker on the choice of music for ceremonial sessions, mainly chooses the performers, while the choice of programme is greatly left to the musicians themselves. Based on these findings, the article concludes that music is not used in the National Assembly as a means of strengthening statecraft, but above all in its function of entertainment.
The aim of the article is to present activities of Slovene commercial diplomacy in the Western Balkan markets. The result of the analysis proves that Slovene commercial diplomacy in the Western ...Balkan markets followed enterprise preferences. Thus, in the first decade of transition (1991–2000) commercial diplomacy focused only on ex-Yugoslav markets, while non-ex-YU (Western Balkan) markets became interesting only after the year 2000. The article argues that this can be explained by the reactiveness (instead of proactiveness) of Slovene enterprises, which stems from the Slovene national character.
Članek se ukvarja z vprašanjem, s kakšnimi težavami se srečujemo - zaradi zgodovinskih, kulturnih, družbenih in drugih okoliščin - pri prevajanju izrazja iz diplomacije. Glavna ugotovitev je, da je ...na Slovenskem jezik diplomacije (še) v nastajanju, zato bi ga morali strokovnjaki čimprej standardizirati, da ne bi prihajalo do ne najbolj posrečenih (ali celo napačnih) prevodov teh izrazov .
