With the COVID-19 pandemic, technological advancements and investments accelerated to create an alternative to the real world that makes it possible for various activities and experiences to be ...handled online. Among these developments, the metaverse comes to the fore because it makes possible real and virtual experiences simultaneously, regardless of the time and space the user exists in, and it acts as a mediator and medium to bring these two environments together. This article discusses the possible impacts of advancements in the metaverse on (real) urban space considering the socio-spatial dialectic through theory synthesis and adaptation. An overall evaluation of the socio-spatial impacts of this is also included and opened up for discussion. Based on a literature review, it is expected that technological developments like the metaverse will introduce a new organization to physical and virtual socio-spatial relations, and new socio-technological groups will be created in them and by using them.
This study aims to investigate the geostatistical relationships between the built environment at the neighborhood level and the spatio-temporal distribution patterns of COVID-19 cases. Istanbul, ...Türkiye, one of the most highly populated metropolitan cities in the world, was chosen as the study area. Clustering and Outlier Analysis (Anselin Local Moran's I), correlation analysis, and Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) are utilized for testing the relationships between land use types, land use diversity, and net population density, representing the built environment and the intensity of COVID-19 cases. Spatial patterns of selected regions with high exposure to COVID-19 are also interpreted, and place-based outcomes are presented. Results are supported by and discussed with descriptive statistics. Land-use diversity, net population density, green areas, commercial areas, and commercial-residential areas are determined to be the predominant determinants of the spatio-temporal distribution of COVID-19 cases in Istanbul. Based on the GWR model, green areas are found to be the variable having the highest effect on the neighborhoods. Land use diversity and commercial areas are the other two prominent variables that affect the high exposure to COVID-19 cases in a neighborhood and its surroundings. Relevantly, it can be concluded that the neighborhood effect plays a crucial role in the spread of and high exposure to COVID-19. The findings of the study will guide the development of design and planning criteria to overcome risk factors such as pandemics in spatial planning decisions at the neighborhood level for cities.
•This study reveals the impact of the built environment on COVID-19 cases in Istanbul at the neighborhood scale.•It is the first study to employ an index of spatial exposure to COVID-19, and massive built environment data for Istanbul.•The study benefits from limited spatial data on COVID-19 cases in Türkiye, revealing crucial outcomes in residential areas.•Detailed interpretations are made of the spatial patterns of selected regions, and place-based outcomes are discussed.•Land-use diversity, net population density, green, commercial and commercial-residential areas affect COVID-19 in Istanbul.
This study aims to understand the relationship between social structure and morphological character based on a case area from Kadıköy, Istanbul, Turkey considering several independent (
cultural ...diversity
,
family type
,
income level
,
ownership status
) and dependent (
land use type
,
land cover
,
building type
,
building layout
,
settlement type
,
settlement pattern
,
street pattern
,
commercial pattern
) variables. Existing data is processed in two steps and analyzed by categorical regression. Results of the study show that urban character of the Kadıköy historical city center is closely related with family type, income level and cultural diversity. As this study has unique contributions in search for alternative methodologies to overcome limitations in the availability of data, it is expected to open new dimensions for further studies in social sciences and urban studies.
In the Information Age, it is becoming crucial to understand the socio-technological factors and their possible outcomes so as to fulfill the upcoming spatial needs of the society. Thus, it is aimed ...to put forward how socio-spatiality is changing along with the developments in new information and communication technologies (nICTs) in the twenty-first century, and how socio-technological factors are affecting urban space in terms of the formation of new urban functions/uses or spaces that will habit/suit/house these dynamics within the city. The outcome of the study shows that there are three phases by which urban (public) space is expected to change according to the impact of socio-technological factors.
This study aims to find out specific relationships between socio-demographic and spatio-temporal distribution patterns of COVID-19 cases. Istanbul being one of the most dynamic and overpopulated ...cities in Turkey is chosen as the case area. The study explores the spatio-temporal spread pattern of COVID-19 between 24 September and 12 December 2020 in 960 neighbourhoods of Istanbul using spatial statistical analysis. Ordinary Least Square (OLS) and Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) methods are used to explain how socio-demographic structure and intensity of COVID-19 cases are related. The results of the study show that gender, household size, and population density are important drivers of exposure to COVID-19. Education level is also found statistically significant though having a weaker effect on spatio-temporal distribution pattern of COVID-19. It is anticipated that the findings of this study will be used by the decision-makers to take action to control the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic - and any other upcoming and unexpected diseases - and to improve the existing conditions to overcome such vulnerabilities to possible risk factors.
This study aims to reveal the relationship between the social structure and
urban pattern in a specified urban area by means of the socio-spatial
dialectic. To understand the circumstances behind ...this dichotomy, analyses
were conducted on two intertwined subjects - social structure and morphology
- as part of a case study of the historical core of the Kad?k?y district in
Istanbul, Turkey. Based on the findings, some inferences, depending on the
predefined social and morphological components, are made about changing
socio-spatialities in the given place by means of time-spacesociety
relations. The results show that each socio-cultural group brought their own
culture and adapted their physical environment according to their basic
needs, and that culture has a restrictive and explanatory effect on the
formation of space. In addition, population growth and the adaptive capacity
of society to external forces demanding change in the urban space also turn
out to unavoidably affect the development scheme of the morphological
character of the area.
