NA60+ is a fixed target experiment proposed in the framework of the Physics Beyond Colliders programme at CERN. It aims to precisely measure the hard and electromagnetic probes in nuclear collisions. ...Initially proposed for the underground cavern ECN3 with very high beam intensities, the experiment now foresees a location in the EHN1 surface hall which was shown to have a limited impact on the physics performance in spite of a significant reduction of beam intensity and detector size. The potential installation and operation of the experiment with the ion beams from the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) has been examined regarding detector integration, beam physics, radiation protection and shielding requirements. The integration of the experiment is considered feasible, but would require a significant reconfiguration of the existing hall infrastructure with regards to shielding and layout.
The Pixel Chamber project purpose is the production of the first solid state active target capable of performing continuous, high-resolution (O(μm)) 3D tracking. The aim is to create a bubble ...chamber-like high-granularity stack of hundreds of very thin monolithic active pixel sensors (MAPS) glued together. In this paper, the R&D to develop the first prototypes with ALPIDE sensors, designed for the ALICE experiment at the CERN LHC, will be presented. Tracking and vertexing algorithms were developed to reconstruct tracks and vertices inside Pixel Chamber. They were tested on Monte Carlo simulations which show that it is possible to obtain a high efficiency for the reconstruction of hadronic tracks, and for the primary and secondary vertices inside the detector. The tracking algorithm has been tested on test beam data to reconstruct long tracks produced in a single ALPIDE sensor parallel to a beam. Results show that it is possible to obtain very good performances in long track reconstruction on a single ALPIDE. Among the possible applications, Pixel Chamber used as an active target, has the potential to allow precision measurements of charm and beauty production. Even more interesting are possible medical and astrophysical applications. The usage of the Pixel Chamber as scatterer detector in Compton Cameras would reduce by orders of magnitude the numbers of gammas required for performing a precise source imaging, both for in vivo monitoring during hadron therapy and for astrophysics measurements.
This paper presents the design of a front-end circuit for monolithic active pixel sensors. The circuit operates with a sensor featuring a small, low-capacitance (< 2 fF) collection electrode and is ...integrated in the DPTS chip, a proof-of-principle prototype of 1.5 mm × 1.5 mm including a matrix of 32 × 32 pixels with a pitch of 15 μm. The chip is implemented in the 65 nm imaging technology from the Tower Partners Semiconductor Co. foundry and was developed in the framework of the EP-R&D program at CERN to explore this technology for particle detection. The front-end circuit has an area of 42 μm 2 and can operate with a power consumption as low as 12 nW. Measurements on the prototype relevant to the front-end will be shown to support its design.
In this paper new ideas to experimentally investigate the issues of chiral symmetry restoration and the first order phase transition in the region of moderate-large baryon density of the phase ...diagram of strongly interacting matter are presented. The experimental strategy to address these points is to use a new fixed-target experiment at the CERN SPS (Super Proton Synchrotron) dedicated to the measurement of the production of muon pairs with unprecedented precision. Dileptons offer the possibility to measure temperature to obtain a caloric curve and to probe chiral symmetry restoration by studying for the first time the mass modifications in a simultaneous measurement of the vector meson ρ and its axial vector partner a1.
TileCal, the central hadronic section of the ATLAS Calorimeter, is a sampling calorimeter made of steel and scintillating tiles. The TileCal front-end electronics reads out about 10,000 ...photo-multipliers at 40 Msps measuring energies ranging from ≃ 30 MeV to ≃ 2 TeV. The read-out system is designed to provide the ATLAS High Level Trigger with reconstructed PMT signals within the time budget allowed by the First Level Trigger (LVL1) running at a maximum trigger rate of 75 KHz. The signal amplitude, time and a reconstruction quality factor are obtained for each PMT using optimal filtering techniques implemented in the Digital Signal Processors (DSP).
Summary
ROHs are long stretches of DNA homozygous at each polymorphic position. The proportion of genome covered by ROHs and their length are indicators of the level and origin of inbreeding. ...Frequent common ROHs within the same population define ROH islands and indicate hotspots of selection. In this work, we investigated ROHs in a total of 1131 pigs from 20 European local pig breeds and in three cosmopolitan breeds, genotyped with the GGP Porcine HD Genomic Profiler. plink software was used to identify ROHs. Size classes and genomic inbreeding parameters were evaluated. ROH islands were defined by evaluating different thresholds of homozygous SNP frequency. A functional overview of breed‐specific ROH islands was obtained via over‐representation analyses of GO biological processes. Mora Romagnola and Turopolje breeds had the largest proportions of genome covered with ROH (~1003 and ~955 Mb respectively), whereas Nero Siciliano and Sarda breeds had the lowest proportions (~207 and 247 Mb respectively). The highest proportion of long ROH (>16 Mb) was in Apulo‐Calabrese, Mora Romagnola and Casertana. The largest number of ROH islands was identified in the Italian Landrace (n = 32), Cinta Senese (n = 26) and Lithuanian White Old Type (n = 22) breeds. Several ROH islands were in regions encompassing genes known to affect morphological traits. Comparative ROH structure analysis among breeds indicated the similar genetic structure of local breeds across Europe. This study contributed to understanding of the genetic history of the investigated pig breeds and provided information to manage these pig genetic resources.
The aim of this research was to determine the effect of adding extruded linseed cake to the dry diet of goats on the concentrations of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and vaccenic acid (VA) in milk ...fat. Thirty crossbreed dairy goats were divided into 3 groups. Their diet was supplemented with 0% (control group), 5% (low group), or 10% (high group) of extruded linseed cake (ELC), which supplied 0, 16, and 32 g/d of linseed fat, respectively. The milk fat percentage (overall mean 3.5%) and yield did not differ with the different diets, but fatty acid composition was affected by the ELC supplements. The inclusion of ELC in the diets did not influence the concentration of fatty acids from C6:0 to C12:0. The concentrations of C14:0 and C16:0 decreased as the quantity of ELC supplements increased. The concentrations (mg/100mg of total fatty acid methyl esters) of VA (0.70, 1.23, and 1.39 in control, low, and high groups respectively) and cis-9,trans-11 CLA (0.63, 0.96, and 1.05 in control, low, and high groups, respectively) were increased by ELC supplements. The milk fat content of VA and cis- 9,trans-11 CLA were closely correlated (R2 = 0.82). Desaturation of VA in the mammary gland to produce cis-9,trans-11 CLA was higher in the control group than in the groups with ELC diets. Extruded linseed cake supplementation to lactating goats may enhance the nutritional profile of milk lipids.
Members of CYCLOIDEA (CYC)/TEOSINTE BRANCHED1 (TB1) transcription factor family are essential to control flower symmetry and inflorescence architecture. In the Helianthus annuus genome, ten CYC/TB1 ...genes have been identified. Studies performed on mutants recognised HaCYC2c as one of the key players controlling zygomorphism in sunflower. We identified CYC2c genes in the diploid Helianthus decapetalus (HdCYC2c) and in the interspecific hybrid Helianthus × multiflorus (H × mCYC2cA and H × mCYC2cB), a triploid (2n = 3× = 51), originated from unreduced eggs of H. decapetalus fertilised by reduced H. annuus male gametes. Phylogenetic analysis showed that HdCYC2c and H × mCYC2c were placed within a CYC2 subclade together with HaCYC2c but distinct from it. The present data showed that in H. × multiflorus the allele derived from H. annuus is deleted or highly modified. The H. × multiflorus taxon exists as radiate and ligulate inflorescence types. We analysed CYC2c expression in H. decapetalus and in the cultivar 'Soleil d'Or' of H. × multiflorus, a ligulate inflorescence type with actinomorphic corolla of disk flowers transformed into a zygomorphic ray-like corolla. In H. decapetalus, the HdCYC2c gene showed differential expression between developing flower types, being up-regulated in the corolla of ray flowers in comparison to the disk flower corolla. In H. × multiflorus, an insertion of 865 bp, which is part of a CACTA transposable element, was found in the 5'-untranslated region (5'-UTR) of H × mCYC2cB. This insertion could promote, even with epigenetic mechanisms, ectopic expression of the gene throughout the inflorescence, resulting in the observed loss of actinomorphy and originating a ligulate head.

We report on a precision measurement of low-mass muon pairs in 158 AGeV indium-indium collisions at the CERN SPS. A significant excess of pairs is observed above the yield expected from neutral meson ...decays. The unprecedented sample size of 360,000 dimuons and the good mass resolution of about 2% allow us to isolate the excess by subtraction of the decay sources. The shape of the resulting mass spectrum is consistent with a dominant contribution from pi+pi- -->rho -->mu+mu- annihilation. The associated space-time averaged spectral function shows a strong broadening, but essentially no shift in mass. This may rule out theoretical models linking hadron masses directly to the chiral condensate.
