This book offers a modern way of dealing with the problems of equilibrium states of Bose systems. Starting with the variation principle of statistical mechanics and the energy-entropy balance ...principle as equilibrium criteria, results for general boson systems and models are explicitly derived using simple functional analytic calculus. Bridging the gap between general theoretical physics and the phenomenological research in the field of Bose systems, this book provides an insight into the fascinating quantum world of bosons. Infrared and collinear safe event shape distributions and their mean values are determined in \({\mathrm{e^+e^-}}\) collisions at centre-of-mass energies between 45 and 202GeV. A phenomenological ...analysis based on power correction models including hadron mass effects for both differential distributions and mean values is presented. Using power corrections, \(\alpha_s\) is extracted from the mean values and shapes. In an alternative approach, renormalisation group invariance (RGI) is used as an explicit constraint, leading to a consistent description of mean values without the need for sizeable power corrections. The QCD \(\beta\)-function is precisely measured using this approach. From the DELPHI data on Thrust, including data from low energy experiments, one finds \\beta_0 = 7.86 \pm 0.32\ for the one loop coefficient of the \(\beta\)-function or, assuming QCD, \n_{\mathrm{f}} = 4.75 \pm 0.44 \ for the number of active flavours. These values agree well with the QCD expectation of \(\beta_0=7.67\) and \(n_{\mathrm{f}}=5\). A direct measurement of the full logarithmic energy slope excludes light gluinos with a mass below 5GeV.
These final results from DELPHI searches for the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson, together with benchmark scans of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) neutral Higgs bosons, used data ...taken at centre-of-mass energies between 200 and 209 GeV with a total integrated luminosity of 224 pb-1. The data from 192 to 202 GeV are reanalysed with improved b-tagging for MSSM final states decaying to four b-quarks. The 95% confidence level lower mass bound on the Standard Model Higgs boson is 114.1 GeV/c2. Limits are also given on the lightest scalar and pseudo-scalar Higgs bosons of the MSSM.
Inclusive J/ψ production in photon–photon collisions has been observed at LEP II beam energies. A clear signal from the reaction γγ→J/ψ+X is seen. The number of observed N(J/ψ→μ+μ−) events is 36±7 ...for an integrated luminosity of 617 pb−1, yielding a cross-section of σ(J/ψ+X)=45±9(stat)±17(syst) pb. Based on a study of the event shapes of different types of γγ processes in the PYTHIA program, we conclude that (74±22)% of the observed J/ψ events are due to ‘resolved’ photons, the dominant contribution of which is most probably due to the gluon content of the photon.

The standard method used for tagging b-hadrons in the DELPHI experiment at the CERN LEP Collider is discussed in detail. The main ingredient of b-tagging is the impact parameters of tracks, which ...relies mostly on the vertex detector. Additional information, such as the mass of particles associated to a secondary vertex, significantly improves the selection efficiency and the background suppression. The paper describes various discriminating variables used for the tagging and the procedure of their combination. In addition, applications of b-tagging to some physics analyses, which depend crucially on the performance and reliability of b-tagging, are described briefly.
We study the effect of electromagnetic radiation on the condensate of a Bose gas. In an earlier paper we considered the problem for two simple models showing the cooperative effect between ...Bose-Einstein condensation and superradiance. In this paper we formalise the model suggested by Ketterle et al in which the Bose condensate particles have a two level structure. We present a soluble microscopic Dicke type model describing a thermodynamically stable system. We find the equilibrium states of the system and compute the thermodynamic functions giving explicit formulae expressing the cooperative effect between Bose-Einstein condensation and superradiance.
Taking into account the anisotropy of phase space in multiparticle production, a self-affine analysis of factorial moments was carried out on the NA22 data for
π
+p and K
+p collisions at 250 GeV/
c. ...Within the transverse plane, the Hurst exponents measuring the anisotropy are consitent with unit value (i.e. no anisotropy). They are, however, only half that value when the longitudinal direction is compared to the transverse ones. Fractality, indeed, turns out to be self-affine rather than self-similar in multiparticle production. In three-dimensional phase space, power-law scaling is observed to be better realized in self-affine than in self-similar analysis.
A search for sleptons, neutralinos, charginos, sgoldstinos and heavy stable charged sleptons in the context of scenarios where the lightest supersymmetric particle is the gravitino, is presented. ...Data collected during 2000 with the DELPHI detector at centre-of-mass energies from 204 to 208 GeV were analysed and combined with all the data collected from 1995 to 1999 at lower energies. No evidence for the production of sleptons, neutralinos and charginos has been found, therefore new limits on the mass of these supersymmetric particles and on the model parameter space are set. The search for heavy stable charged sleptons also updates the stable sleptons mass limit. The absence of evidence for sgoldstino production allows limits to be set on its mass and on the scale of supersymmetry breaking.
We report results on event-by-event fluctuations of transverse momentum, Phi(p(t)), in pi(+)p and K(+)p collisions at 250 GeV/c. For the first time, their dependence on rapidity region, transverse ...momentum acceptance, multiplicity, mean transverse momentum per event, and on the correlation between transverse momentum and multiplicity are systematically presented. The results are compared with those from the PYTHIA Monte Carlo generator. The fluctuations under the same acceptance cuts as used in current heavy-ion experiments are also presented.
