We propose a novel approach to measure the branching ratios of the leptonic η(′)→μ+μ− decays by using charmed meson decays, namely, D(s)+→π+η(′)(→μ+μ−) and D0→K−π+η(′)(→μ+μ−). We advocate that the ...data available at LHCb can already yield a new measurement of Br(η→μ+μ−) with accuracy competitive with the current world average. We also estimate that using the data collected by LHCb between 2015 and 2018 in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb−1, the relative uncertainties to this branching ratio can be reduced down to ∼10%. We also show that the first observation of Br(η′→μ+μ−) may be possible with the upgrade of the LHCb experiment.
The electron-positron collider DA Phi NE, the Italian Phi factory, has been recently upgraded in order to implement an innovative collision scheme based on large crossing angle, small beam sizes at ...the crossing point, and compensation of beam-beam interaction by means of sextupole pairs creating a "crab-waist" configuration in the interaction region. Experimental tests of the novel scheme exhibited an increase by a factor of 3 in the peak luminosity of the collider with respect to the performances reached before the upgrade. In this Letter we present the new collision scheme, discuss its advantages, describe the hardware modifications realized for the upgrade, and report the results of the experimental tests carried out during commissioning of the machine in the new configuration and standard operation for the users.
Neutrinos were assumed to be massless particles until the discovery of the neutrino oscillation process. This phenomenon indicates that the neutrinos have non-zero masses and the mass eigenstates ...(ν1, ν2, ν3) are mixtures of their flavour eigenstates (νe, νμ, ντ). The oscillations between different flavour eigenstates are described by three mixing angles (θ12, θ23, θ13), two differences of the squared neutrino masses of the ν2/ν1 and ν3/ν1 pairs and a charge conjugation parity symmetry violating phase δCP. The Double Chooz experiment, located near the Chooz Electricité de France reactors, measures the oscillation parameter θ13 using reactor neutrinos. Here, the Double Chooz collaboration reports the measurement of the mixing angle θ13 with the new total neutron capture detection technique from the full data set, yielding sin2(2θ13) = 0.105 ± 0.014. This measurement exploits the multidetector configuration, the isoflux baseline and data recorded when the reactors were switched off. In addition to the neutrino mixing angle measurement, Double Chooz provides a precise measurement of the reactor neutrino flux, given by the mean cross-section per fission 〈σf〉 = (5.71 ± 0.06) × 10−43 cm2 per fission, and reports an empirical model of the distortion in the reactor neutrino spectrum. The Double Chooz collaboration reports the neutrino oscillation parameter θ13 from a measurement of the disappearance of reactor anti-electron neutrinos with the total neutron capture technique.

- factory DAFNE has been running with an upgraded interaction region in order to test the crabbed waist collision scheme. The aim is to reach a ...large improvement of the specific luminosity of the accelerator. We describe the various detectors realized to have a reliable and fast absolute luminosity measurement, the on-line analysis in order to get rid of the machine background contribution, and the performances of the system.
The transition to turbulence in a rotating boundary layer is analysed via direct numerical simulation (DNS) in an annular cavity made of two parallel corotating discs of finite radial extent, with a ...forced inflow at the hub and free outflow at the rim. In a former numerical investigation (Viaud, Serre & Chomaz J. Fluid Mech., vol. 598, 2008, pp. 451–464) realized in a sectorial cavity of azimuthal extent $2\lrm{\pi} / 68$, we have established the existence of a primary bifurcation to nonlinear global mode with angular phase velocity and radial envelope coherent with the so-called elephant mode theory. The former study has demonstrated the subcritical nature of this primary bifurcation with a base flow that keeps being linearly stable for all Reynolds numbers studied. The present work investigates the stability of this elephant mode by extending the cavity both in the radial and azimuthal direction. When the Reynolds number based on the forced throughflow is increased above a threshold value for the existence of the nonlinear global mode, a large-amplitude impulsive perturbation gives rise to a self-sustained saturated wave with characteristics identical to the 68-fold global elephant mode obtained in the smaller cavity. This saturated wave is itself globally unstable and a second front appears in the lee of the primary where small-scale instability develops. These secondary instabilities are identical for the $2\lrm{\pi} / 68$ and the $2\lrm{\pi} / 4$ long sectorial cavities, indicating that transition involves a Floquet mode of zero azimuthal wavenumber. This secondary instability leads to a very disorganized state, defining the transition to turbulence. The observed transition to turbulence linked to the secondary instability of a global mode confirms, for the first time on a real flow, the possibility of a direct transition to turbulence through an elephant mode cascade, a scenario that was up to now only observed on the Ginzburg–Landau model.
This paper describes the LUMI project which aims at providing fast, reliable and absolute luminosity measurements at the modified DAφNE interaction point in Frascati for testing the new "crabbed ...waist" scheme. We present a description of the experimental setup (two luminometers, LUMI1 and LUMI2), the simulation framework developped for this project and summarize the results and performances.
