We present an analysis of the gas-phase oxygen abundances of a sample of 28 galaxies in the local Universe (z < 0.02) hosting Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). The data were obtained with the 4.2 m ...William Herschel Telescope. We derive local oxygen abundances for the regions where the SNe Ia exploded by calculating oxygen gradients through each galaxy (when possible) or assuming the oxygen abundance of the closest H ii region. The sample selection only considered galaxies for which distances not based on the SN Ia method are available. Then, we use a principal component analysis to study the dependence of the absolute magnitudes on the colour of the SN Ia, the oxygen abundances of the region where they exploded and the stretch of the SN light curve. We demonstrate that our previous result suggesting a metallicity dependence on the SN Ia luminosity for non-reddened SNe Ia can be extended to our whole sample. These results reinforce the need of including a metallicity proxy, such as the oxygen abundance of the host galaxy, to minimize the systematic effect induced by the metallicity dependence of the SN Ia luminosity in future studies of SNe Ia at cosmological distances.
We present the PMAS/PPak Integral-field Supernova hosts COmpilation (PISCO), which comprises integral field spectroscopy (IFS) of 232 supernova (SN) host galaxies that hosted 272 SNe, observed over ...several semesters with the 3.5 m telescope at the Calar Alto Observatory (CAHA). PISCO is the largest collection of SN host galaxies observed with wide-field IFS, totaling 466,347 individual spectra covering a typical spatial resolution of ∼380 pc. Focused studies regarding specific SN Ia-related topics will be published elsewhere; this paper aims to present the properties of the SN environments, using stellar population (SP) synthesis, and the gas-phase interstellar medium, providing additional results separating stripped-envelope SNe into their subtypes. With 11,270 H ii regions detected in all galaxies, we present for the first time a statistical analysis of H ii regions, which puts H ii regions that have hosted SNe in context with all other star-forming clumps within their galaxies. SNe Ic are associated with environments that are more metal-rich and have higher EW(H ) and higher star formation rate within their host galaxies than the mean of all H ii regions detected within each host. This in contrast to SNe IIb, which occur in environments that are very different compared to other core-collapse SNe types. We find two clear components of young and old SPs at SNe IIn locations. We find that SNe II fast decliners tend to explode at locations where the SFR is more intense. Finally, we outline how a future dedicated IFS survey of galaxies in parallel to an untargeted SN search would overcome the biases in current environmental studies.
Context.
Apertif is a phased-array feed system for the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope, providing forty instantaneous beams over 300 MHz of bandwidth. A dedicated survey program utilizing this ...upgrade started on 1 July 2019, with the last observations taken on 28 February 2022. The imaging survey component provides radio continuum, polarization, and spectral line data.
Aims.
Public release of data is critical for maximizing the legacy of a survey. Toward that end, we describe the release of data products from the first year of survey operations, through 30 June 2020. In particular, we focus on defining quality control metrics for the processed data products.
Methods.
The Apertif imaging pipeline, Apercal, automatically produces non-primary beam corrected continuum images, polarization images and cubes, and uncleaned spectral line and dirty beam cubes for each beam of an Apertif imaging observation. For this release, processed data products are considered on a beam-by-beam basis within an observation. We validate the continuum images by using metrics that identify deviations from Gaussian noise in the residual images. If the continuum image passes validation, we release all processed data products for a given beam. We apply further validation to the polarization and line data products and provide flags indicating the quality of those data products.
Results.
We release all raw observational data from the first year of survey observations, for a total of 221 observations of 160 independent target fields, covering approximately one thousand square degrees of sky. Images and cubes are released on a per beam basis, and 3374 beams (of 7640 considered) are released. The median noise in the continuum images is 41.4 uJy beam

We also provide primary beam images for each individual Apertif compound beam. The data are made accessible using a Virtual Observatory interface and can be queried using a variety of standard tools.
Vertebral osteomyelitis after spine instrumentation surgery (pVOM) is a rare complication. Most cases of infection occur early after surgery that involve skin and soft tissue and can be managed with ...debridement, antibiotics, and implant retention (DAIR).
To identify pVOM risk factors and evaluate management strategies.
From a multicentre cohort of deep infection after spine instrumentation (IASI) cases (2010–2016), pVOM cases were compared with those without vertebral involvement. Early and late infections were defined (<60 days and >60 days after surgery, respectively). Multivariate analysis was used to explore risk factors.
Among 410 IASI cases, 19 (4.6%) presented with pVOM, ranging from 2% (7/347) in early to 19.1% (12/63) in late IASIs. After multivariate analysis, age (adjusted odds ratio (aOR): 1.10; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.03–1.18), interbody fusion (aOR: 6.96; 95% CI: 2–24.18) and coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) infection (aOR: 3.83; 95% CI: 1.01–14.53) remained independent risk factors for pVOM. Cases with pVOM had worse prognoses than those without (failure rate; 26.3% vs 10.8%; P = 0.038). Material removal was the preferred strategy (57.9%), mainly in early cases, without better outcomes (failure rate; 33.3% vs 50% compared with DAIR). Late cases managed with removal had greater success compared with DAIR (failure rate; 0% vs 40%; P = 0.067).
Risk factors for pVOM are old age, use of interbody fusion devices and CoNS aetiology. Although the diagnosis leads to a worse prognosis, material withdrawn should be reserved for late cases or when spinal fusion is achieved.
The electron temperatures of high-metallicity 12 + log (O/H) > 8.2 H ii regions have been studied. The empirical flux–flux relations which express the nebular-to-auroral O iii line ratio Q3,O (as ...well as the nebular-to-auroral O ii line ratio Q2,O, and the nebular-to-auroral N ii line ratio Q2,N) in terms of the nebular R3 and R2 line fluxes in spectra of high-metallicity H ii regions are derived, and the electron temperatures t3,O, t2,O and t2,N in a number of extragalactic H ii regions are also determined. Furthermore, the t2–t3 diagram is discussed. It is found that there is a one-to-one correspondence between t2 and t3 electron temperatures for H ii regions with a weak nebular R3 lines (log R3≲ 0.5). The derived t2,N–t3,O relation for these H ii regions is similar to commonly used t2–t3 relations. The H ii regions with a strong nebular R3 line flux (log R3≳ 0.5) do not follow this relation. A discrepancy between t2,N and t2,O temperatures is found, being the t2,N temperatures systematically lower than the t2,O ones. The differences are small at low electron temperatures, and increase with increasing electron temperatures up to 10 per cent at t= 1. The uncertainties in the atomic data may be the cause of this discrepancy.
We studied a case series of peripheral nerve hyperexcitability (PNH) aiming to describe clinical characteristics, immunologic and cancer associations, antibodies against neuronal antigens ...(voltage-gated potassium channel antibodies VGKC-Abs and other), and muscle biopsy findings.
Patients presenting with clinical and electrophysiologic signs of PNH were selected. We studied clinical and electrophysiologic features; a panel of non-neuronal organ-specific antibodies, immunofluorescence on rat nervous tissues, and radioimmunoprecipitation for VGKC-Abs; and muscle biopsies.
Thirty-eight patients were included. After the exclusion of 6 cases with axonopathy of known origin, patients were subdivided according to the presence of electrophysiologic findings of motor axonopathy and association with cancer: axonopathic-PNH (group A: 12 patients), isolated nonparaneoplastic PNH (group B: 16 patients), and isolated paraneoplastic PNH (3 with thymoma and myasthenia gravis, 1 with thyroid carcinoma). PNH clinical features were similar in groups A and B. We found an overall high prevalence of clinical autoimmunity (33% of group A and 63% of group B) and systemic non-neuronal autoantibodies (42% of group A and 75% of group B). However, VGKC-Abs were only positive in 2 patients of group B. Ten patients underwent muscle biopsy, which showed inflammatory changes in 2 cases and nonspecific myopathic features in 8.
PNH is a heterogeneous disorder involving the peripheral nerves in patients with a high propensity for developing autoimmunity. Associated muscle diseases are frequent in the form of myositis, myasthenia gravis, or nonspecific myopathic pathologic findings. VGKC-Abs were uncommon in this series.
We performed a compilation of more than 1000 published spectra of H II regions in spiral galaxies. The oxygen and nitrogen abundances in each H II region were recomputed in a homogeneous way, using ...the P-method. The radial distributions of oxygen and nitrogen abundances were derived. The correlations between oxygen abundance and macroscopic properties are examined. We found that the oxygen abundance in spiral galaxies correlates with its luminosity, rotation velocity, and morphological type: the correlation with the rotation velocity may be slightly tighter. There is a significant difference between the luminosity-metallicity relationship obtained here and that based on the oxygen abundances determined through the R sub(23)-calibrations. The oxygen abundance of NGC 5457 recently determined using direct measurements of T sub(e) (Kennicutt et al. 2003) agrees with the luminosity-metallicity relationship derived in this paper, but is in conflict with the luminosity-metallicity relationship derived with the R sub(23)-based oxygen abundances. The obtained luminosity-metallicity relation for spiral galaxies is compared to that for irregular galaxies. Our sample of galaxies shows evidence that the slope of the O/H - M sub(B) relationship for spirals (-0.079 plus or minus 0.018) is slightly more shallow than that for irregular galaxies (-0.139 plus or minus 0.011). The effective oxygen yields were estimated for spiral and irregular galaxies. The effective oxygen yield increases with increasing luminosity from M sub(B) similar to -11 to M sub(B) similar to -18 (or with increasing rotation velocity from V sub(rot) similar to 10 km s super(-1) to V sub(rot) similar to 100 km s super(-1)) and then remains approximately constant. Irregular galaxies from our sample have effective oxygen yields lowered by a factor of 3 at maximum, i.e. irregular galaxies usually keep at least 1/3 of the oxygen they manufactured during their evolution.
Based on a combined analysis of SDSS imaging and CALIFA integral field spectroscopy data, we report on the detection of faint (24 <μr mag/□″< 26) star-forming spiral-arm-like features in the ...periphery of three nearby early-type galaxies (ETGs). These features are of considerable interest because they document the still ongoing inside-out growth of some local ETGs and may add valuable observational insight into the origin and evolution of spiral structure in triaxial stellar systems. A characteristic property of the nebular component in the studied ETGs, classified i+, is a two-radial-zone structure, with the inner zone that displays faint (EW(Hα) ≃ 1 Å) low-ionization nuclear emission-line region (LINER) properties, and the outer one (3 Å <EW(Hα)≲ 20 Å) Hii-region characteristics. This spatial segregation of nebular emission in two physically distinct concentric zones calls for an examination of aperture effects in studies of type i+ ETGs with single-fiber spectroscopic data.
