3
H and
3
He, and the possible existence of a new bosonic particle, the so-called X17, in the
3
H(
p
,
e
+
e
−
)
4
He and
3
He(
n
,
e
+
e
−
)
4
He reactions. The advantage to perform these investigations in few-nucleon systems is related to the possibility to compute accurate
ab initio
bound- and continuum-states wave functions using well established nuclear interactions. Therefore, if these effects are observed, they can be unambiguously related to underlying beyond Standard Model theories.
The unexpected observation of eccess of events in the angular distribution of e−e+ pairs in various nuclear transitions has spurred a large interest, both experimentally and theoretically. This ...eccess has been interpreted as the possible existence of a new bosonic particle, the so-called X17, of mass around 17 MeV. In the present work, we investigate theoretically the possible effects of the presence of the X17 in the 3H(p, e+e−)4He and 3H(n, e+e−)4He reactions. For these processes it is possible to compute accurate ab initio bound- and continuum-states wave functions, so the existence of X17 can be unambigously revealed. Moreover, by exploiting the rich structure of the 4He spectrum, it is possible to determine its quantum number, as, for example, if it is either a scalar, a pseudoscalar, a vector, or an axial particle.
The astrophysical S factor for the radiative capture d(p,γ)^{3}He in the energy range of interest for big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) is calculated using an ab initio approach. The nuclear Hamiltonian ...retains both two- and three-nucleon interactions-the Argonne v_{18} and the Urbana IX, respectively. Both one- and many-body contributions to the nuclear current operator are included. The former retain for the first time, besides the 1/m leading order contribution (m is the nucleon mass), also the next-to-leading order term, proportional to 1/m^{3}. The many-body currents are constructed in order to satisfy the current conservation relation with the adopted Hamiltonian model. The hyperspherical harmonics technique is applied to solve the A=3 bound and scattering states. Particular attention is paid in this second case in order to obtain, in the energy range of BBN, an uncertainty on the astrophysical S factor of the order or below ∼1%. Then, in this energy range, the S factor is found to be ∼10% larger than the currently adopted values. Part of this increase (1%-3%) is due to the 1/m^{3} one-body operator, while the remaining is due to the new more accurate scattering wave functions. We have studied the implication of this new determination for the d(p,γ)^{3}He S factor on the deuterium primordial abundance. We find that the predicted theoretical value for ^{2}H/H is in excellent agreement with its experimental determination, using the most recent determination of the baryon density of the Planck experiment, and with a standard number of relativistic degrees of freedom N_{eff}=3.046 during primordial nucleosynthesis. This calls for a more accurate measurement of the astrophysical S factor in order to confirm the present predictions.
The large values of the singlet and triplet two-nucleon scattering lengths locate the nuclear system close to the unitary limit. This particular position strongly constrains the low-energy ...observables in the three-nucleon system as depending on one parameter, the triton binding energy, and introduces correlations in the low-energy sector of light nuclei. Here we analyze the propagation of these correlations to infinite nuclear matter showing that its saturation properties, the equation of state of β-stable nuclear matter, and several properties of neutron stars, as their maximum mass, are well determined solely by a few number of low-energy quantities of the two- and three-nucleon systems. In this way we make a direct link between the universal behavior observed in the low-energy region of few-nucleon systems and fundamental properties of nuclear matter and neutron stars.
Actual solutions of the Bethe-Salpeter equation for a two-fermion bound system are becoming available directly in Minkowski space, by virtue of a novel technique, based on the so-called Nakanishi ...integral representation of the Bethe-Salpeter amplitude and improved by expressing the relevant momenta through light-front components, i.e. k±=k0±k3. We solve a crucial problem that widens the applicability of the method to real situations by providing an analytically exact treatment of the singularities plaguing the two-fermion problem in Minkowski space, irrespective of the complexity of the irreducible Bethe-Salpeter kernel. This paves the way for feasible numerical investigations of relativistic composite systems, with any spin degrees of freedom. We present a thorough comparison with existing numerical results, evaluated in both Minkowski and Euclidean space, fully corroborating our analytical treatment, as well as fresh light-front amplitudes illustrating the potentiality of non perturbative calculations performed directly in Minkowski space.
The low energy systems of three or four neutrons are treated within the adiabatic hyperspherical framework, yielding an understanding of the low energy quantum states in terms of an adiabatic ...potential energy curve. The dominant low energy potential curve for each system, computed here using widely accepted nucleon-nucleon interactions with and without the inclusion of a three-nucleon force, shows no sign of a low energy resonance. However, both systems exhibit a low energy enhancement of the density of states, or of the Wigner–Smith time delay, which derives from long-range universal physics analogous to the Efimov effect. That enhancement could be relevant to understanding the low energy excess of correlated four-neutron ejection events observed experimentally in a nuclear reaction by Kisamori et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 052501 (2016).
In recent years local chiral interactions have been derived and implemented in quantum Monte Carlo methods in order to test to what extent the chiral effective field theory framework impacts our ...knowledge of few- and many-body systems. In this Letter, we present Green's function Monte Carlo calculations of light nuclei based on the family of local two-body interactions presented by our group in a previous paper in conjunction with chiral three-body interactions fitted to bound- and scattering-state observables in the three-nucleon sector. These interactions include Δ intermediate states in their two-pion-exchange components. We obtain predictions for the energy levels and level ordering of nuclei in the mass range A=4-12, accurate to ≤2% of the binding energy, in very satisfactory agreement with experimental data.
Global and semi-global convective dynamo simulations of solar-like stars are known to show a transition from an antisolar (fast poles, slow equator) to solar-like (fast equator, slow poles) ...differential rotation (DR) for increasing rotation rate. The dynamo solutions in the latter regime can exhibit regular cyclic modes, whereas in the former one, only stationary or temporally irregular solutions have been obtained so far. In this paper we present a semi-global dynamo simulation in the transition region, exhibiting two coexisting dynamo modes, a cyclic and a stationary one, both being dynamically significant. We seek to understand how such a dynamo is driven by analyzing the large-scale flow properties (DR and meridional circulation) together with the turbulent transport coefficients obtained with the test-field method. Neither an dynamo wave nor an advection-dominated dynamo are able to explain the cycle period and the propagation direction of the mean magnetic field. Furthermore, we find that the effect is comparable or even larger than the effect in generating the toroidal magnetic field, and therefore, the dynamo seems to be of 2 or 2 type. We further find that the effective large-scale flows are significantly altered by turbulent pumping.

, and is the natural length given by the interaction range. Efimov physics refers to this universal behavior, which is often hidden by the onset of system-specific nonuniversal effects. → ∞, and we show that nuclear systems belong to this class of universality.
Context.
Results from global magnetoconvection simulations of solar-like stars are at odds with observations in many respects: simulations show a surplus of energy in the kinetic power spectrum at ...large scales; anti-solar differential rotation profiles with accelerated poles, and a slow equator for the solar rotation rate; and a transition from axi- to nonaxisymmetric dynamos at a much lower rotation rate than what is observed. Even though the simulations reproduce the observed active longitudes in fast rotators, their motion in the rotational frame (the so-called azimuthal dynamo wave, ADW) is retrograde, in contrast to the prevalent prograde motion in observations.
Aims.
We study the effect of a more realistic treatment of heat conductivity in alleviating the discrepancies between observations and simulations.
Methods.
We use physically motivated heat conduction by applying Kramers opacity law to a semi-global spherical setup that describes the convective envelopes of solar-like stars, instead of a prescribed heat conduction profile from mixing-length arguments.
Results.
We find that some aspects of the results now better correspond to observations: the axi- to nonaxisymmetric transition point is shifted towards higher rotation rates. We also find a change in the propagation direction of ADWs that means that prograde waves are also now found. However, the transition from an anti-solar to solar-like rotation profile is also shifted towards higher rotation rates, leaving the models in an even more unrealistic regime.
Conclusions.
Although Kramers-based heat conduction does not help in reproducing the solar rotation profile, it does help in the faster rotation regime, where the dynamo solutions now better match the observations.
