Paper presents the effects of the newly synthesized fullerol C sub(60)(OH) sub(22) on the growth of tumor cells in vitro and its modulating activity on doxorubicin (DOX)-induced cytotoxicity in human ...breast cancer cell lines. Cell growth inhibition was evaluated by tetrazolium colorimetric WST1 assay. Electron spin resonance (ESR) 'trapping' method was used to investigate OH-radical scavenger activity of fullerol during Fenton's reaction. At a range of nanomolar concentrations fullerol induced cell growth inhibition, which was cell line, dose and time dependent. Fullerol also strongly suppressed DOX- induced cytotoxicity at all concentrations regardless the time of fullerol addition. Proanthocyanidins added as single agent to MCF-7 cell culture for 48 h induced low growth inhibition but in combination with DOX strongly decreased DOX cytotoxicity. Fullerol was found to be a potent hydroxyl radical scavenger: the relative intensity of ESR signals of DMPO-hydroxyl radical (DMPO-OH) spin adduct decreased by 88% in the presence of 0.5 mu g/ml of fullerol. The obtained results suggest that antiproliferative effect of the fullerol and its protective effect on DOX-induced cytotoxicity might be mediated through hydroxyl-radical scavenger activity of C sub(60)(OH) sub(22).
Long term pollution of selected aquatic resources of Vojvodina with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB's) and organochlorine pesticides (OCP's) has led to high degree of bioaccumulation of the above ...chemicals along the food chain. This paper documents the bioaccumulation in two fish species commonly found in rivers and canals of Vojvodina, common carp (Cyprinus Carpio) and pike (Exos lucinus). Samples offish, sediment and water were collected from the Danube, Sava and Tisa rivers and a fish farm “Ečka” which is supplied with water from the river Tisa and river Begej.
All samples were analysed by highly sensitive capillary column GC using EC detectors. Samples were analysedfor aspectrum of compounds and are presented here as total PCB's and OCP's.
The results show that the studied compounds are present in water samples at very low concentrations (PCB's in concentrations at or below the limit of detection, OCP's in concentrations below the legally allowable concentrations by Yugoslav norms). The sediment samples contain the studied compounds at significantly higher concentrations but still within the expectable range. Fish tissue contained elevated concentrations, and especially so the tissue of the top predator in the food chain, the Pike, showing that bioaccumulation has occurred. Of special concern are the extremely high concentrations of PCB's in the tissue of fish samples collected from river Sava indicating the still existing effects of pollution by PCB's in the watershed of the river Sava.
Yugoslavia's exposure to UN sanctions since 1992 resulted in a production reduction in almost every field of economic activity, and that caused a decrease of pollutant inputs in the water ecosystems. ...Although the boundary profiles of international rivers registered no change, an improvement was detected in river water quality on profiles that run deeper inside the country. The quality of Yugoslav rivers in period from 1991 to 1995 is presented in this paper. The quality of the Danube, Tisa, Sava, Drina, Morava, Ibar, Bojana and Moraca is evaluated by the concentrations of characteristic parameters. The specific situation where the reduction in industrial and agricultural production occurred, together with reduced traffic activities and uncontrolled black-market import of fertilizers, influence the changes in concentrations of water quality parameters. It is possible to conclude, based on analysed data, that a general improvement in the quality of Yugoslav rivers has occurred during the period of observation, 1991–1995.
The treatment of eating disorders demands a comprehensive medical approach, where a dietitian has an important role, primarily due to numerous instances of malnutrition. The objective of this paper ...was to recapitulate the research findings and clinical evidence which show the importance of medical nutrition therapy in the treatment of eating disorders; furthermore, they present significant guidelines for clinical practice. The research methods have entailed a thorough exploration of literature available at research data bases. The results of the research studies published so far have unambiguously pointed out that, when eating disorders are concerned, there is an urgent need for a diet therapy in order for the patient to restore the appropriate body weight as well as normal eating habits. On the one hand, certain authors suggest returning to normal nutritional habits immediately, whereas, on the other hand, certain others advocate a diet therapy program, that is, a gradual process of recovery. Patients incapable of oral food intake receive enteral nutrition. Parenteral nutrition is applied for recovering the lost electrolytes and fluids, but it should be applied rarely, primarily in states of urgency. For patients suffering from eating disorders the increase in weight indicates good chances of recovery; therefore, the patient’s nutritional status should be carefully and continuously noted. Finally, it is important that our country, too, should adopt a carefully prescribed and conducted diet therapy as an obligatory step in the treatment of patients with eating disorders.
In this paper we start from the assumption that social dynamics and cultural-civilizational progress cannot be viewed separately from the social history of the media as complex ...technological-communication structures. In this paper we deal with the influence of new disruptive technologies DLT (Distributed Ledger Technologies) better known as blockchain technologies which, thanks to the latest technological solutions, have great potential for transforming the media and journalism as a profession, thus we have explained the technological concept on which they are based. We will discuss the concept of personalized blockchain journalism and propose a user economy model that guarantees the financial sustainability of the platform. Observing information as a user experience, we have discussed the possibility of adequate cognitive response of users in conditions of information saturation, and raised the issue of structuring information in designing a journalistic platform on the blockchain, as an ecosystem that will distance itself from existing polluted media space. Finally, we have proposed a topic for further reflection and scientific research, which is the latest technological transition based on quantum computing, artificial intelligence and the Metaverse, which will provide a completely new user experience in 3D virtual space, where user avatars will rely less and less on traditional media and journalism as we know it today.
Tabulated data are presented on the concentrations of persistent chlorinated organic compounds (hexachlorocylorhexane), DDE, DDT, and polychlorinated biphenyls) in water, sediment, fish, and eggs of ...aquatic birds from the Danube river, Tisa river, Palic lake, and a fishpond in Vojvodina, Yugoslavia. All types of sample contained high concentrations of insecticide and PCB residues.
The aim of this work was to detennine the content of the residues of the most commonly detected organohalogens and polychlorinated biphenyls in biomaterial. It is also the introduction of frogs as a ...new fine indicator of pollution in aquatic and terrestrial systems, due to their abundance all over Europe and their habitats in still and running waters. The residues of organohalogens and polyaromatic hydrocarbons in frog liver samples were taken from four sites - the river Danube and canal DID in Vojvodina (northern part of Serbia), from the river Dubasnica near the town of Bor and in the Zlot canyon, Serbia,Yugoslavia. They were detennined using gas chromatography with mass detector (GCIMS) and they indicate the high level of contamination of the chosen aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems by HCH, PCB, PAH and herbicides.
Reduction of Colorado beetle damage on potato is very unsuccessful in spite of intensive control, sometimes 6-7 times in season. Inefficacy is very often the consequence of fungicide and insecticide ...incompatibility applied in tank mix. Surfactant Tensiofix IF 33 was used together with Bancol WP 50 and Kuprizor, Kaptazor or Ridomil Z 72 WP in tank mix in field experiments. The evaluation of efficacy revealed the reduction of persistent action when used with Kaptazor 50 WP. Addition of Tensiofix IF 33 did not improve biological compatibility. Efficacy was good in tank mix with Ridomil Z 72 WP. Novodor (Bacillus thuringiensis var. tenebrionis) was very efficient in combination with Ridomil Z 72 WP (metalaxyl+cineb combination).
In this paper the procedure for catalytical bromination of C
