The amalgamation of continental masses during the formation of West Gondwana at the end of the Neoproterozoic (ca. 0.6 Ga) resulted in the closure of oceans and associated generation of magmatic arcs. To better understand episodes of high magma production, compositional and isotopic evolution of arc magmatism in the western active margin of Gondwana, this work presents new U-Pb zircon ages, lithogeochemistry, whole-rock Nd and in situ zircon Hf isotopes from plutonic and metaplutonic rocks of a dismembered arc-related unit (Pacatuba-Maranguape Complex) from the Ceará Central Domain, Borborema Province (NE Brazil). The Pacatuba-Maranguape Complex is exposed in the northeastern portion of the Ceará Central Domain and comprises pre- to late-tectonic granitoids bordered by migmatitic-gneisses that have experienced variable partial melting and deformation. Zircon U-Pb analyses yielded concordant ages of 675 Ma, 655–640 Ma, 630–625 Ma and 610 Ma, with inherited grains of 880–700 Ma, 700–650 Ma and 2200–2000 Ma. Geochemically, the granitoids are medium- to high-K calc-alkaline, metaluminous to slightly peraluminous, magnesian and calc-alkalic to alkali-calcic. Lu-Hf and Sm-Nd model ages provided TDM (Hf) model ages between 920 Ma and 1470 Ma with ɛHf(t) values of + 12.75 to −5.44, and TDM (Nd) values between 950 Ma and 1470 Ma with ɛNd(t) values between −1.06 and + 4.35. These data indicate that these granitoids were generated from the mixture of juvenile magmas and older crustal components on an active continental margin setting. Petrogenetic and geochronological constraints indicate a synchronous evolution with the Santa Quitéria Magmatic Arc, exposed approximately 100 km to the west. The compilation of geochronological and geochemical data from the Pacatuba-Maranguape Complex and the Santa Quitéria Arc suggests that arc magmatism developed mainly as a result of a magmatic flare-up between 660 and 620 Ma during the subduction of the Goiás-Pharusian oceanic crust in the central portion of West Gondwana.
The systematics of benign and moderately pathogenic Theileria isolates from cattle and deer originating from different geographic regions was undertaken by small-subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) gene ...nucleotide-sequence analysis. A maximum-likelihood phylogenetic tree constructed from these sequences resulted in two major divisions, each with a common ancestor. One major division branches into four relatively divergent groups, including (1) bovine Theileria sp. Type D (USA and Korea), (2) T. mutans Intona and Theileria sp. MSD (Africa), (3) T. cervi (USA), and (4) well-characterized pathogenic Theileria spp. (Africa). The other major division branches into two groups: (1) T. buffeli Warwick and T. buffeli Marula and (2) a second branch of closely related isolates with SSU rRNA gene Types B, B1, C, E, and H. Putative geographically associated diversity was noted only in the Korean bovine Theileria spp. with SSU rRNA gene types C and H and in African T. mutans Intona and Theileria sp. MSD. The current results show that the United States bovine Theileria isolates are not T. mutans because they have T. buffeli Marula (Type A) and/or Type D (species undesignated) SSU rRNA gene sequences. The taxonomic separation of T. buffeli Warwick from African T. mutans is confirmed in this study.
The proxy marker for human papillomavirus (HPV), p16, is included in the new AJCC 8th/UICC 8th staging system, but due to incongruence between p16 status and HPV infection, single biomarker ...evaluation could lead to misallocation of patients. We established nomograms for overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) in patients with oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) and known HPV-DNA and p16 status, and validated the models in cohorts from high- and low-prevalent HPV countries.
Consecutive OPSCC patients treated in Denmark, 2000-2014 formed the development cohort. The validation cohorts were from Sweden, Germany, and the United Kingdom. We developed nomograms by applying a backward-selection procedure for selection of variables, and assessed model performance.
In the development cohort, 1313 patients, and in the validation cohorts, 344 German, 503 Swedish and 463 British patients were included. For the OS nomogram, age, gender, combined HPV-DNA and p16 status, smoking, T-, N-, and M-status and UICC-8 staging were selected, and for the PFS nomogram the same variables except UICC-8 staging. The nomograms performed well in discrimination and calibration.
Our nomograms are reliable prognostic methods in patients with OPSCC. Combining HPV DNA and p16 is essential for correct prognostication. The nomograms are available at www.orograms.org .
Breast cancers show variable sensitivity to paclitaxel. There is no diagnostic test to identify tumors that are sensitive to this drug. We used U133A chips to identify genes that are associated with ...pathologic complete response (pCR) to preoperative paclitaxel-containing chemotherapy in stage I-III breast cancer (n = 82). Tau was the most differentially expressed gene. Tumors with pCR had significantly lower ($P<0.3\times 10^{-5}$) mRNA expression. Tissue arrays from 122 independent but similarly treated patients were used for validation by immunohistochemistry. Seventy-four percent of pCR cases were tau protein negative; the odds ratio for pCR was 3.7 (95% confidence interval, 1.6-8.6; P = 0.0013). In multivariate analysis, nuclear grade (P < 0.01), age <50 (P = 0.03), and tau-negative status (P = 0.04) were independent predictors of pCR. Small interfering RNA experiments were performed to examine whether down-regulation of tau increases sensitivity to chemotherapy in vitro. Down-regulation of tau increased sensitivity of breast cancer cells to paclitaxel but not to epirubicin. Tubulin polymerization assay was used to assess whether tau modulates binding of paclitaxel to tubulin. Preincubation of tubulin with tau resulted in decreased paclitaxel binding and reduced paclitaxel-induced microtubule polymerization. These data suggest that low tau expression renders microtubules more vulnerable to paclitaxel and makes breast cancer cells hypersensitive to this drug. Low tau expression may be used as a marker to select patients for paclitaxel therapy. Inhibition of tau function might be exploited as a therapeutic strategy to increase sensitivity to paclitaxel.
Evidence is reported for a narrow structure near the $J/\psi\phi$ threshold in exclusive $B^+\to J/\psi\phi K^+$ decays produced in $\bar{p} p $ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.96 \TeV$. A signal of ...$14\pm5$ events, with statistical significance in excess of 3.8 standard deviations, is observed in a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $2.7 \ifb$, collected by the CDF II detector. The mass and natural width of the structure are measured to be $4143.0\pm2.9(\mathrm{stat})\pm1.2(\mathrm{syst}) \MeVcc$ and $11.7^{+8.3}_{-5.0}(\mathrm{stat})\pm3.7(\mathrm{syst}) \MeVcc$.
We observed the rapid radio brightening of GRB 210702A with the Australian Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) just 11hr post-burst, tracking early-time radio variability over a 5hr period on ~15min ...timescales at 9.0, 16.7, and 21.2GHz. A broken power-law fit to the 9.0GHz light curve showed that the 5hr flare peaked at a flux density of 0.4+/-0.1mJy at ~13hr post-burst with a steep rise and decline. The observed temporal and spectral evolution are not expected in the standard internal-external shock model, where forward and reverse shock radio emission evolves on much longer timescales. The early-time (<1day) optical and X-ray light curves from the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory demonstrated typical afterglow forward shock behaviour, allowing us to use blast wave physics to determine a likely homogeneous circumburst medium and an emitting electron population power-law index of p=2.9+/-0.1. We suggest the early-time radio flare is likely due to weak interstellar scintillation (ISS), which boosted the radio afterglow emission above the ATCA sensitivity limit on minute timescales. Using weak ISS relations, we were able to place an upper limit on the size of the blast wave of \(\leq6 \times 10^{16}\)cm in the plane of the sky, which is consistent with the theoretical forward shock size prediction of \(8\times10^{16}\)cm for GRB 210702A at ~13h post-burst. This represents the earliest ISS size constraint on a GRB blast wave to date, demonstrating the importance of rapid (<1day) radio follow-up of GRBs using several-hour integrations to capture the early afterglow evolution, and to track scintillation over a broad frequency range.
Studying the temporal variability of BL Lac objects at the highest energies provides unique insights into the extreme physical processes occurring in relativistic jets and in the vicinity of ...super-massive black holes. To this end, the long-term variability of the BL Lac object PKS 2155-304 is analyzed in the high (HE, 100MeV < E < 300 GeV) and very high energy (VHE, E > 200 GeV) gamma-ray domain. Over the course of similar to 9 yr of H. E. S. S. observations the VHE light curve in the quiescent state is consistent with a log-normal behavior. The VHE variability in this state is well described by flicker noise (power-spectral-density index βVHE = 1 .10 + 0.10 -0,13 ) on timescales larger than one day. An analysis of similar to 5.5 yr of HE Fermi-LAT data gives consistent results (βHE = 1 .20 + 0.21 -0.23 , on timescales larger than 10 days) compatible with the VHE findings. The HE and VHE power spectral densities show a scale invariance across the probed time ranges. A direct linear correlation between the VHE and HE fluxes could neither be excluded nor firmly established. These long-term-variability properties are discussed and compared to the red noise behavior (beta similar to 2) seen on shorter timescales during VHE-flaring states. The difference in power spectral noise behavior at VHE energies during quiescent and flaring states provides evidence that these states are influenced by different physical processes, while the compatibility of the HE and VHE long-term results is suggestive of a common physical link as it might be introduced by an underlying jet-disk connection.
Aims. Following the detection of the fast radio burst FRB150418 by the SUPERB project at the Parkes radio telescope, we aim to search for very-high energy gamma-ray afterglow emission. Methods. ...Follow-up observations in the very-high energy gamma-ray domain were obtained with the H.E.S.S. imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope system within 14.5 h of the radio burst. Results. The obtained 1.4 h of gamma-ray observations are presented and discussed. At the 99% C.L. we obtained an integral upper limit on the gamma-ray flux of Phi sub( gamma )(E> 350 GeV) < 1.33 x 10 super(-8) m super(-2) s super(-1). Differential flux upper limits as function of the photon energy were derived and used to constrain the intrinsic high-energy afterglow emission of FRB 150418. Conclusions. No hints for high-energy afterglow emission of FRB 150418 were found. Taking absorption on the extragalactic background light into account and assuming a distance of z= 0.492 based on radio and optical counterpart studies and consistent with the FRB dispersion, we constrain the gamma-ray luminosity at 1 TeV to L< 5.1 x 10 super(47) erg/s at 99% C.L.
