Imaging exoplanetary systems is essential to characterizing exoplanetary systems and to studying planet-disk interactions to understand planet formation. Such imaging in the visible and near-infrared ...is challenging because these objects are very faint relative to their star and only fractions of an arcsecond away. Coronagraphic instruments have already allowed the imaging of a few exoplanets, but their performance is limited by wavefront aberrations. Adaptive optics systems partly compensate for the Earth's atmosphere turbulence, but they cannot fully control the wavefront. Some of the starlight leaks through the coronagraph and forms speckles in the image. Focal plane wavefront control, used as a second stage after the adaptive optics system, can minimize the speckle intensity within an area called the dark hole. We demonstrated the on-sky performance of dark hole techniques, pairwise probing coupled with electric field conjugation, using the apodized pupil Lyot coronagraph of the VLT/SPHERE instrument. In this paper, we probe their performance using the SPHERE four-quadrant phase mask coronagraph. We demonstrate the interest of combining dark hole techniques and reference differential imaging (RDI). We create a dark hole on-sky in the narrow band around~\(1.7\,\mu\)m observing HR\,4796. We then record broadband images of HR\,4796 and a reference star at the H band. The dark hole techniques improve the H-band detection limit by a factor of three. The dark hole is stable from one star to a nearby star enabling RDI. This stability offers two new strategies of observation. First, one can quickly create a dark hole observing a bright star before pointing to a faint target star. Furthermore, one can couple dark hole techniques and RDI. A very interesting point is that the performance of these methods does not depend on the astrophysical signal.
Context.
Circumstellar disks and self-luminous giant exoplanets or companion brown dwarfs can be characterized through direct-imaging polarimetry at near-infrared wavelengths. SPHERE/IRDIS at the ...Very Large Telescope has the capabilities to perform such measurements, but uncalibrated instrumental polarization effects limit the attainable polarimetric accuracy.
Aims.
We aim to characterize and correct the instrumental polarization effects of the complete optical system, that is, the telescope and SPHERE/IRDIS.
Methods.
We created a detailed Mueller matrix model in the broadband filters
Y, J, H,
and
K
s
and calibrated the model using measurements with SPHERE’s internal light source and observations of two unpolarized stars. We developed a data-reduction method that uses the model to correct for the instrumental polarization effects, and applied it to observations of the circumstellar disk of T Cha.
Results.
The instrumental polarization is almost exclusively produced by the telescope and SPHERE’s first mirror and varies with telescope altitude angle. The crosstalk primarily originates from the image derotator (K-mirror). At some orientations, the derotator causes severe loss of signal (> 90% loss in the
H
- and
K
s
-band) and strongly offsets the angle of linear polarization. With our correction method we reach, in all filters, a total polarimetric accuracy of ≲0.1% in the degree of linear polarization and an accuracy of a few degrees in angle of linear polarization.
Conclusions.
The correction method enables us to accurately measure the polarized intensity and angle of linear polarization of circumstellar disks, and is a vital tool for detecting spatially unresolved (inner) disks and measuring the polarization of substellar companions. We have incorporated the correction method in a highly-automated end-to-end data-reduction pipeline called IRDAP, which we made publicly available online.
Second-generation exoplanet imagers using extreme adaptive optics (ExAO) and coronagraphy have demonstrated their great potential for studying close circumstellar environments and for detecting new ...companions and helping to understand their physical properties. However, at very small angular separation, their performance in contrast is limited by several factors: diffraction by the complex telescope pupil (central obscuration and spiders) not perfectly canceled by the coronagraph, residual dynamic wavefront errors, chromatic wavefront errors, and wavefront errors resulting from noncommon path aberrations (NCPAs). These latter are differential aberrations between the visible wavefront sensing path of the ExAO system and the near-infrared science path in which the coronagraph is located. In a previous work, we demonstrated the use of a Zernike wavefront sensor called ZELDA for sensing NCPAs in the VLT/SPHERE exoplanet imager and their compensation with the high-order deformable mirror of the instrument. These early tests on the internal light source led to encouraging results for the attenuation of the quasi-static speckles at very small separation. In the present work, we move to the next step with the on-sky validation of NCPA compensation with ZELDA. With an improved procedure for the compensation of NCPAs, we start by reproducing previous results on the internal source. We show that the amount of aberration integrated between 1 and 15 cycles/pupil (c/p) is decreased by a factor of approximately five, which translates into a gain in raw contrast of between 2 and 3 at separations below 300 mas. On sky, we demonstrate that NCPA compensation works in closed loop, leading to an attenuation of the amount of aberration by a factor of approximately two. However, we identify a loss of sensitivity for the sensor that is only partly explained by the difference in Strehl ratio between the internal and on-sky measurements. Our simulations show that the impact of ExAO residuals on ZELDA measurements is negligible for integration times beyond a few tenths of a second. Coronagraphic imaging on sky is improved in raw contrast by a factor of 2.5 at most in the ExAO-corrected region. We use coronagraphic image reconstruction based on a detailed model of the instrument to demonstrate that both internal and on-sky raw contrasts can be precisely explained, and we establish that the observed performance after NCPA compensation is no longer limited by an improper compensation for aberration but by the current apodized-pupil Lyot coronagraph design. We finally conclude that a coronagraph upgrade combined to a proper NCPA compensation scheme could easily bring a gain in raw contrast of a factor of two to three below 200 mas.

Polarimetric imaging is one of the most effective techniques for high-contrast imaging and for the characterization of protoplanetary disks, and it has the potential of becoming instrumental ...in the characterization of exoplanets. The Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet REsearch (SPHERE) instrument installed on the Very Large Telescope (VLT) contains the InfraRed Dual-band Imager and Spectrograph (IRDIS) with a dual-beam polarimetric imaging (DPI) mode, which offers the capability of obtaining linear polarization images at high contrast and resolution.
Aims.
We aim to provide an overview of the polarimetric imaging mode of VLT/SPHERE/IRDIS and study its optical design to improve observing strategies and data reduction.
Methods.
For
H
-band observations of TW Hydrae, we compared two data reduction methods that correct for instrumental polarization effects in different ways: a minimization of the “noise” image (
U
ϕ
), and a correction method based on a polarimetric model that we have developed, as presented in Paper II of this study.
Results.
We use observations of TW Hydrae to illustrate the data reduction. In the images of the protoplanetary disk around this star, we detect variability in the polarized intensity and angle of linear polarization that depend on the pointing-dependent instrument configuration. We explain these variations as instrumental polarization effects and correct for these effects using our model-based correction method.
Conclusions.
The polarimetric imaging mode of IRDIS has proven to be a very successful and productive high-contrast polarimetric imaging system. However, the instrument performance is strongly dependent on the specific instrument configuration. We suggest adjustments to future observing strategies to optimize polarimetric efficiency in field-tracking mode by avoiding unfavorable derotator angles. We recommend reducing on-sky data with the pipeline called IRDAP, which includes the model-based correction method (described in Paper II) to optimally account for the remaining telescope and instrumental polarization effects and to retrieve the true polarization state of the incident light.
Direct imaging is the primary technique currently used to detect young and warm exoplanets and understand their formation scenarios. The extreme flux ratio between an exoplanet and its host star ...requires the use of coronagraphs to attenuate the starlight and create high contrast images. However, their performance is limited by wavefront aberrations that cause stellar photons to leak through the coronagraph and on to the science detector preventing the observation of fainter extrasolar companions. The VLT/SPHERE instrument takes advantage of its efficient adaptive optics system to minimize dynamical aberrations to improve the image contrast. In good seeing conditions, the performance is limited by quasi-static aberrations caused by slowly varying aberrations and manufacturing defects in the optical components. The mitigation of these aberrations requires additional wavefront sensing and control algorithms to enhance the contrast performance of SPHERE. Dark hole algorithms initially developed for space-based application and recently performed on SPHERE calibration unit have shown significant improvement in contrast. This work presents a status update of dark hole algorithms applied on SPHERE and the results obtained during the on-sky tests performed on February 15th 2022.
The ability to accurately predict the contrast achieved from high contrast imagers is important for efficient scheduling and quality control measures in modern observatories. We aim to consistently ...predict and measure the raw contrast achieved by SPHERE/IRDIS on a frame by frame basis to improve the efficiency and scientific yield with SPHERE at the Very Large Telescope (VLT).Contrast curves were calculated for over 5 years of archival data using the most common SPHERE/IRDIS coronagraphic mode in the H2/H3 dual band filter, consisting of approximately 80,000 individual frames. These were merged and interpolated with atmospheric data to create a large data-base of contrast curves with associated features. An empirical power law model for contrast, motivated by physical considerations, was then trained and finally tested on an out-of-sample test data set. At an angular separation of 300 mas, the contrast model achieved a mean (out-of-sample) test error of 0.13 magnitudes with the residual 5-95% percentiles between -0.23 and 0.64 magnitude respectively. The models test set root mean square error (RMSE) between 250-600 mas was between 0.31 - 0.40 magnitudes which is equivalent with other state-of-the-art contrast models presented in the literature. In general, the model performed best for targets between 5-9 G-band magnitude, with degraded performance for targets outside this range. This model is currently being incorporated into the Paranal SCUBA software for first level quality control and real time scheduling support.
Context. Direct imaging of exoplanets takes advantage of state-of-the-art adaptive optics (AO) systems, coronagraphy, and post-processing techniques. Coronagraphs attenuate starlight to mitigate the ...unfavorable flux ratio between an exoplanet and its host star. AO systems provide diffraction-limited images of point sources and minimize optical aberrations that would cause starlight to leak through coronagraphs. Post-processing techniques then estimate and remove residual stellar speckles such as noncommon path aberrations (NCPAs) and diffraction from telescope obscurations. Aims. We aim to demonstrate an efficient method to minimize the speckle intensity due to NCPAs during an observing night on VLT/SPHERE. Methods. We implement an iterative dark-hole (DH) algorithm to remove stellar speckles on-sky before a science observation. It uses a pair-wise probing estimator and a controller based on electric field conjugation. This work presents the first such on-sky minimization of speckles with a DH technique on SPHERE. Results. We show the standard deviation of the normalized intensity in the raw images is reduced by a factor of up to 5 in the corrected region with respect to the current calibration strategy under median conditions for VLT. This level of contrast performance obtained with only 1 min of exposure time reaches median performances on SPHERE that use post-processing methods requiring 1h-long sequences of observations. We also present an alternative calibration method that takes advantage of the starlight coherence and improves the post-processed contrast levels rms by a factor of about 3. Conclusions. This on-sky demonstration represents a decisive milestone for the future design, development, and observing strategy of the next generation of ground-based exoplanet imagers for 10m to 40m telescope.
We report results of a direct imaging survey for giant planets around 80 members of the beta Pic, TW Hya, Tucana-Horologium, AB Dor, and Hercules-Lyra moving groups, observed as part of the ...Gemini/NICI Planet-Finding Campaign. We found numerous (>70) candidate companions in our survey images. Some of these candidates were rejected as common-proper motion companions using archival data; we reobserved with Near-Infrared Coronagraphic Imager (NICI) all other candidates that lay within 400 AU of the star and were not in dense stellar fields. The vast majority of candidate companions were confirmed as background objects from archival observations and/or dedicated NICI Campaign followup. Our results strongly constrain the frequency of planets within semi-major axes of 50 AU as well. We restrict the frequency of 1-20 M sub(Jup) companions at semi-major axes from 10-50 AU to <21% at a 95.4% confidence level using DUSTY models and to <7% at a 95.4% using COND models.
Context.
Expanding the sample of directly imaged companions to nearby, young stars that are amenable to detailed astrometric and spectroscopic studies is critical for the continued development and ...validation of theories of their evolution and atmospheric processes.
Aims.
The recent release of the
Gaia
astrometric catalog allows us to efficiently search for these elusive companions by targeting those stars that exhibit the astrometric reflex motion induced by an orbiting companion. The nearby (27 pc), young (24 Myr) star AF Leporis (AF Lep) was targeted because of its significant astrometric acceleration measured between the H
IPPARCOS
and
Gaia
astrometric catalogs, consistent with a wide-orbit planetary-mass companion detectable with high-contrast imaging.
Methods.
We used the SPHERE instrument on the VLT to search for faint substellar companions in the immediate vicinity of AF Lep. We used observations of a nearby star interleaved with those of AF Lep to efficiently subtract the residual point spread function. This provided sensitivity to faint planetary-mass companions within 1″ (~30 au) of the star.
Results.
We detected the companion AF Lep b at a separation of 339 mas (9 au) from the host star, at almost the exact location predicted by the astrometric acceleration, and within the inner edge of its unresolved debris disk. The measured K-band contrast and the age of the star yield a model-dependent mass of between 4 and 6
M
Jup
, consistent with the mass derived from an orbital fit to the absolute and relative astrometry of 4.3
−1.2
+2.9
M
Jup
. The near-infrared spectral energy distribution of the planet is consistent with an object at the L−T spectral type transition, but under-luminous with respect to field-gravity objects.
Conclusions.
AF Lep b joins a growing number of substellar companions imaged around stars in the young
β
Pictoris moving group. With a mass of between 3 and 7
M
Jup
, it occupies a gap in this isochronal sequence between hotter, more massive companions, such as PZ Tel B and
β
Pic b, and the cooler 51 Eri b, which is sufficiently cool for methane to form within its photosphere. Lying at the transition between these two classes of objects, AF Lep b will undoubtedly become a benchmark for studies of atmospheric composition and processes, as well as an anchor for models of the formation and evolution of substellar and planetary-mass companions.
