Precipitation, as an important part of the hydrological cycle, is often related to flood and drought. In this study, we collected daily rainfall data from 21 rainfall stations in Shaanxi Province ...from 1961 to 2017, and calculated eight extreme climate indices. Annual and seasonal concentration indices (CI) were also calculated. The trends in the changes in precipitation were calculated using the M–K test and Sen’s slope. The results show that the precipitation correlation index and CI (concentration index) in Shaanxi Province are higher in the south and lower in the north. For the annual scale, the CI value ranges from 0.6369 to 0.6820, indicating that Shaanxi Province has a high precipitation concentration and an uneven distribution of annual precipitation. The eight extreme precipitation indices of most rainfall stations showed a downward trend during the study period, and more than half of the stations passed the 0.05 confidence interval test. Among them, the Z value of PRCPTOT (annual total precipitation in wet days) at Huashan station reached −6.5270. The lowest slope of PRCPTOT reached −14.3395. This shows that annual rainfall in Shaanxi Province has been decreasing in recent decades. These findings could be used to make decisions about water resources and drought risk management in Shaanxi Province, China.
Water is essential for human activities and economic development, and the water environment significantly influences ecological balance and global climate. China and Southeast Asia are the most ...populous areas in the world, and their water resources are deteriorating day by day. We focus on five representative cities such as, Beijing, Jakarta, Hanoi, Kathmandu and Manila to investigate water-environmental problems with the ultimate goal of providing recommendations for sustainable urban water management. The study found that (1) the water environment of all cities has been polluted to varying levels, while the pollution has improved in Beijing and Jakarta, and the situation in other regions is severe. (2) The aquatic biodiversity has reduced, and its pollution is mainly caused by organic pollutants and decreasing river flow. In addition, numerous people live in megacities without access to clean surface water or piped drinking water, which greatly increases the use of groundwater. Further, frequent floods in the world leads to serious damage to urban infrastructure and further deterioration of water environment quality. To address these problems, countries and organizations have begun to construct wastewater treatment plants and develop water-saving technology to ensure healthy and sustainable development of water environment. The results and practical recommendations of this study can provide scientific insights for future research and management strategies to address water quality challenges during ongoing policy debates and decision-making processes.
Reconstruction of historical land uses helps to understand patterns, drivers, and impacts of land-use change, and is essential for finding solutions to land-use sustainability. In order to analyze ...the relationship between land-use change and urban flooding, this study used the Classification and Regression Tree (CART) method to extract modern (2017) land-use data based on remote sensing images. Then, the Paleo-Land-Use Reconstruction (PLUR) program was used to reconstruct the land-use maps of Xi’an during the Ming (1582) and Qing (1766) dynasties by consulting and collecting records of land-use change in historical documents. Finally, the Flo-2D model was used to simulate urban flooding under different land-use scenarios. Over the past 435 years (1582–2017), the urban construction land area showed a trend of increasing, while the unused land area and water bodies were continuously decreasing. The increase in urban green space and buildings was 20.49% and 19.85% respectively, and the unused land area changed from 0.32 km2 to 0. Urban flooding in the modern land-use scenario is the most serious. In addition to the increase in impervious areas, the increase in building density and the decrease in water areas are also important factors that aggravate urban flooding. This study can provide a reference for future land-use planning and urban flooding control policy formulation and revision in the study area.
Basin ecohydrological processes are essential for informing policymaking and social development in response to growing environmental problems. In this paper, we review watershed ecohydrology, ...focusing on the interaction between watershed ecological and hydrological processes. Climate change and human activities are the most important factors influencing water quantity and quality, and there is a need to integrate watershed socioeconomic activities into the paradigm of watershed ecohydrological process studies. Then, we propose a new framework for integrated watershed management. It includes (1) data collection: building an integrated observation network; (2) theoretical basis: attribution analysis; (3) integrated modeling: medium- and long-term prediction of ecohydrological processes by human–nature interactions; and (4) policy orientation. The paper was a potential solution to overcome challenges in the context of frequent climate extremes and rapid land-use change.
Identifying the spatial and temporal heterogeneity of water-related ecosystem services and the mechanisms influencing them is essential for optimizing ecosystem governance and maintaining watershed ...sustainable development. However, the complex and undiscovered interplay between human activities and natural factors underpins the solutions to the water scarcity and flooding challenges faced by climate transition zone basins. This study used a multiple spatial-scale analysis to: (i) quantify the spatial and temporal variations of the water yield ecosystem service (WYs) of the Wei River Basin (WRB) from 2000 to 2020 using the InVEST model and remote sensing data; and (ii) look at how human activities, climate, topography, and vegetation affect the WYs at the climate transition zone sub-catchment scale using the geographical detector model and multi-scale geographically weighted regression (MGWR). The conclusive research reveals that there would be a gradual increase in WYs between the years 2000 and 2020, as well as a distinct and very different spatial aggregation along the climatic divide. The average yearly precipitation was shown to be particularly linked to the water yield of the WRB. The interplay of human, climatic, plant, and terrain variables has a substantially higher influence than most single factors on the geographical differentiation of WYs. Bivariate enhancement and non-linear enhancement are the most common types of factor interactions. This shows that there are significant interactions between natural and human variables. Our study shows that precipitation and temperature are the main factors that cause WYs in the semi-arid zone. In the semi-humid zone, precipitation and vegetation are the key controlling factors that cause WYs. We provide new perspectives for understanding and optimizing ecosystem management by comparing the drivers of WYS in sub-basins with different climatic conditions. Based on the findings, we recommend that particular attention should be paid to ecosystem restoration practices in watersheds in climatic transition zones.
Droughts have emerged as a global problem in contemporary societies. China suffers from different degrees of drought almost every year, with increasing drought severity each year. Droughts in China ...are seasonal and can severely impact crops. This study used spatiotemporal trend and characteristics analysis of drought disaster data from 1991 to 2018 in Chinese provinces, in addition to the Mann–Kendall test and wavelet analysis. The drought disaster data included the crop damage area, drought-affected area of the crops, and crop failure area. The outputs of the crops decreased by 10%, 30%, and 80%, respectively. The population with reduced drinking water caused by drought, and the domestic animals with reduced drinking water caused by drought, were numbered in the tens of thousands. The results of the study show that the crop damage areas owing to drought disasters, drought-affected areas of crops, and crop failure areas in China were mainly distributed in the northern, eastern, northeaster, and southwestern regions. The number of people and domestic animals with reduced drinking water owing to drought in China were mainly concentrated in the northern and southwestern regions. These indicators showed a general increasing trend. Tibet, Fujian, Shandong, Jiangsu, Anhui, and Henan provinces and autonomous regions also showed a slightly increasing trend. In particular, the number of domestic animals with reduced drinking water caused by drought in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region showed a clear increasing trend with a significant Z-value of 2.2629. The results of this research can be used to provide scientific evidence for predicting future trends in drought and for practising the best management of drought prevention and resistance.
As an essential part of the hydrological cycle, precipitation is usually associated with floods and droughts and is increasingly being paid attention to in the context of global warming. Analyzing ...the change trends and correlation of temperature and extreme precipitation indicators can effectively identify natural disasters. This study aimed to detect the correlation and change trends of temperature and extreme precipitation indicators in Inner Mongolia from 1960 to 2019. Panel vector autoregression (PVAR) models based on Stata software were used to detect the correlation between temperature and extreme precipitation indicators at 35 climatological stations throughout Inner Mongolia. The temperature and extreme precipitation indicator trends were analyzed using the Mann–Kendall test and Sen’s slope method. The spatial distribution characteristics of the annual precipitation and rainfall intensity were more significant in the southeast and more minor in the northwest, while an increase in the annual wet days was noticeable to the northeast. The Granger cause tests of the temperature and the extreme precipitation indicators showed a correlation between each indicator and temperature at the significance level of 1%. The temperature positively correlated with only the rainfall intensity while negatively correlating with the remaining indicators. There is no doubt that trend analysis showed significant increasing trends in rainfall intensity at all stations, which means increased risk in extreme precipitation events. By contrast, the annual precipitation and annual wet days showed significant decreasing trends, which means that the precipitation is concentrated, and it is easier to form extreme precipitation events. The study can provide a basis for decision-making in water resources and drought/flood risk management in Inner Mongolia, China.
The hydrological characteristics of gravel-containing soils are different from those of gravel-free soils, so it is worth further understanding and enriching the theory of soil and water ...conservation. In this study, adjustable slope (10°, 20°, 30°) test soil boxes with different surface gravel contents (0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%) were prepared to study the runoff erosion characteristics of gravel-covered land slopes under different rainfall conditions (10 mm/h, 20 mm/h, 30 mm/h). Compared with the bare soil, the runoff start time of the three slopes covered with 100% soil surface gravel content is delayed by 38.90, 32.83 and 73.39%, the runoff producing rate of gravel condition under different slopes decreased by 7.20–71.52% and the total amount of sediment yield decreased by 7.94~84.57%. Surface gravel cover can effectively reduce runoff and sediment yield, which is beneficial for better soil and water conservation. The results of this study have a certain reference value for the theory of soil and water conservation and can be used as a basis for guiding efficient agricultural production in gravel-mulched land and construction (like road slope improvement).
This paper presents a global and local finite-time synchronization control law for memristor neural networks. By utilizing the drive–response concept, differential inclusions theory, and Lyapunov ...functional method, we establish several sufficient conditions for finite-time synchronization between the master and corresponding slave memristor-based neural network with the designed controller. In comparison with the existing results, the proposed stability conditions are new, and the obtained results extend some previous works on conventional recurrent neural networks. Two numerical examples are provided to illustrate the effective of the design method.
Frequent urban flooding has caused great economic losses and casualties worldwide. Sponge cities have attracted attention as an important means of flood control and disaster reduction. This paper ...systematically and comprehensively analyzes the development of sponge campuses in China and other countries and compares classic examples of sponge campus construction. We identify the following issues in sponge campus construction: lack of appropriate numerical simulation model, low public engagement and support of sponge campuses, and a lack of standardized guidance for sponge campus construction. Based on the in-depth analysis of successful examples of sponge campus construction in developed countries, and combined with consideration of China's economic development, geographical location, and urbanization level, we suggest the future development direction of sponge campus: the development of local sponge campus models; popularization of sponge theory; improvement to public participation and experience; improve the financial system of sponge campus; and standardization of guidance for sponge campus construction and maintenance. This paper expounds on the necessity of sponge campus construction and further improves the theoretical system of sponge campuses. These results can provide theoretical support and reference for the construction or transformation of sponge campuses in colleges and universities and then promote further development of sponge campuses.
