In the research realm of game theory, interdependent networks have extended the content of spatial reciprocity, which needs the suitable coupling between networks. However, thus far, the vast ...majority of existing works just assume that the coupling strength between networks is symmetric. This hypothesis, to some extent, seems inconsistent with the ubiquitous observation of heterogeneity. Here, we study how the heterogeneous coupling strength, which characterizes the interdependency of utility between corresponding players of both networks, affects the evolution of cooperation in the prisoner's dilemma game with two types of coupling schemes (symmetric and asymmetric ones). Compared with the traditional case, we show that heterogeneous coupling greatly promotes the collective cooperation. The symmetric scheme seems much better than the asymmetric case. Moreover, the role of varying amplitude of coupling strength is also studied on these two interdependent ways. Current findings are helpful for us to understand the evolution of cooperation within many real-world systems, in particular for the interconnected and interrelated systems.

In this study, zein was stabilized using alginate oligosaccharides (AOS) for the delivery of curcumin (Cur) through antisolvent precipitation. Zein-AOS2:1 nanoparticles were uniform and stable (size 116.5 nm, polydispersity index (PDI) 0.16, charge −30 mV). The complex nanoparticle system was relatively stable under different conditions, including pH 4–9 and temperature 30–90 °C. In addition, the encapsulation efficiency of the Cur/zein-AOS2:1 complex nanoparticles was 89.7%. Zein was protected during gastrointestinal digestion. Only 32.9% Cur was released in the stomach after 90 min and 83.8% was released in the intestinal tract after 240 min proving that zein-AOS complex nanoparticles showed a good sustained-release effect. Thus, the zein-AOS complex nanoparticle system is suitable for delivering encapsulated lipophilic bioactive compounds.
The photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to energy carriers has emerged as one of the most promising strategies to alleviate the energy crisis and CO2 pollution, for which the development of catalyst was ...considered as the determining factor for the accomplishment of this conversion process. In this study, three stable and isostructural metal–organic frameworks (denoted as MOF-Ni, MOF-Co, and MOF-Cu) have been synthesized and used as heterogeneous catalysts in photocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). It is worth noting that the MOF-Ni exhibited very high selectivity of 97.7% for photoreducing CO2 to CO, which has exceeded most of the reported MOF-based catalysts in the field. Significantly, the MOFs associated with a monometallic catalytic center offer a simple and precise structural model which allows us to understand more definitively the specific effects of different metal-ion species on photoreduction of CO2 as well as the reactive mechanism.
Liquid-liquid phase separation promotes the formation of membraneless condensates that mediate diverse cellular functions, including autophagy of misfolded proteins. However, how phase separation ...participates in autophagy of dysfunctional mitochondria (mitophagy) remains obscure. We previously discovered that nuclear receptor Nur77 (also called TR3, NGFI-B, or NR4A1) translocates from the nucleus to mitochondria to mediate celastrol-induced mitophagy through interaction with p62/SQSTM1. Here, we show that the ubiquitinated mitochondrial Nur77 forms membraneless condensates capable of sequestrating damaged mitochondria by interacting with the UBA domain of p62/SQSTM1. However, tethering clustered mitochondria to the autophagy machinery requires an additional interaction mediated by the N-terminal intrinsically disordered region (IDR) of Nur77 and the N-terminal PB1 domain of p62/SQSTM1, which confers Nur77-p62/SQSTM1 condensates with the magnitude and liquidity. Our results demonstrate how composite multivalent interaction between Nur77 and p62/SQSTM1 coordinates to sequester damaged mitochondria and to connect targeted cargo mitochondria for autophagy, providing mechanistic insight into mitophagy.

To overcome this weakness, we prepared composite beads constituted by sodium alginate and UiO-66 by solidification in CaCl

solution. The material was characterized by SEM, FTIR, XRD, BET, and TGA methods. These composite beads were applied to remove a common antibiotic Levofloxacin (LOFX) from water, and the experimental parameters (i.e., initial LOFX concentration, adsorption time, pH, and adsorbent dose) were optimized. The adsorption data could be satisfactorily fitted to the Langmuir isotherm model (

Peripheral nerve injury (PNI), one of the most common concerns following trauma, can result in a significant loss of sensory or motor function. Restoration of the injured nerves requires a complex ...cellular and molecular response to rebuild the functional axons so that they can accurately connect with their original targets. However, there is no optimized therapy for complete recovery after PNI. Supplementation with exogenous growth factors (GFs) is an emerging and versatile therapeutic strategy for promoting nerve regeneration and functional recovery. GFs activate the downstream targets of various signaling cascades through binding with their corresponding receptors to exert their multiple effects on neurorestoration and tissue regeneration. However, the simple administration of GFs is insufficient for reconstructing PNI due to their short half‑life and rapid deactivation in body fluids. To overcome these shortcomings, several nerve conduits derived from biological tissue or synthetic materials have been developed. Their good biocompatibility and biofunctionality made them a suitable vehicle for the delivery of multiple GFs to support peripheral nerve regeneration. After repairing nerve defects, the controlled release of GFs from the conduit structures is able to continuously improve axonal regeneration and functional outcome. Thus, therapies with growth factor (GF) delivery systems have received increasing attention in recent years. Here, we mainly review the therapeutic capacity of GFs and their incorporation into nerve guides for repairing PNI. In addition, the possible receptors and signaling mechanisms of the GF family exerting their biological effects are also emphasized.
N6‐methyladenosine (m6A) is a well‐known modification of RNA. However, as a key m6A methyltransferase, METTL16 has not been thoroughly studied in gastric cancer (GC). Here, the biological role of ...METTL16 in GC and its underlying mechanism was studied. Immunohistochemistry was used to detect the expression of METTL16 and relationship between METTL16 level and prognosis of GC was analysed. CCK8, colony formation assay, EdU assay and xenograft mouse model were used to study the effect of METTL16. Regulatory mechanism of METTL16 in the progression of GC was studied through flow cytometry analysis, RNA degradation assay, methyltransferase inhibition assay, RT‐qPCR and Western blotting. METTL16 was highly expressed in GC cells and tissues and was associated with prognosis. In vitro and in vivo experiments confirmed that METTL16 promoted proliferation of GC cells and tumour growth. Furthermore, down‐regulation of METTL16 inhibited proliferation by G1/S blocking. Significantly, we identified cyclin D1 as a downstream effector of METTL16. Knock‐down METTL16 decreased the overall level of m6A and the stability of cyclin D1 mRNA in GC cells. Meanwhile, inhibition of methyltransferase activity reduced the level of cyclin D1. METTL16‐mediated m6A methylation promotes proliferation of GC cells through enhancing cyclin D1 expression.
Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging infectious disease with an increasing case number and extensive geographical expansion, raising concerns locally and globally; ...however, the description of its clinical features needs to be addressed by large studies. We aimed to determine all the clinical features of SFTS in a large population of patients in an endemic area.
In this prospective observational study, data were collected on patients admitted to the People's Liberation Army Hospital in Xinyang, Henan Province, China, with laboratory-diagnosed SFTS. Demographic, clinical, laboratory, and treatment data were collected for each patient, and patients were followed up within 2 weeks after discharge or discontinuation of treatment. The association between each demographic, clinical, and laboratory variable with a fatal outcome was assessed. A clinical scoring model was designed for the early prediction of a fatal outcome, and the effect of treatment on outcome was analysed.
Between April 1, 2011, and Oct 31, 2017, 2096 patients with laboratory-confirmed SFTS were admitted. Mean age at admission was 61·4 years (SD 12·2) and 1239 (59%) patients were female. The case fatality rate (CFR) was 16·2% (95% CI 14·6–17·8). A higher risk was associated with being male (unadjusted odds ratio OR 1·45, 95% CI 1·15–1·83; p=0·002), older age (for a 10-year increase, unadjusted OR 1·82, 95% CI 1·62–2·04; p<0·0001), longer delay in admission (for every extra day taken before admission to hospital, unadjusted OR 1·18, 1·12–1·24; p<0·0001), presence of diarrhoea (adjusted OR 1·44, 1·12–1·87; p=0·005) or dyspnoea (adjusted OR 8·35, 5·97–11·69; p<0·0001), and development of haemorrhagic signs (adjusted OR 2·79, 95% CI 2·18–3·57; p<0·0001) or neurological symptoms (adjusted OR 30·26, 21·39–42·81; p<0·0001). Laboratory variables that were associated with death included abnormal concentrations of lactate dehydrogenase, aspartate aminotransferase, and blood urea nitrogen, and abnormal neutrophil percentage, which together with age and neurological symptoms were combined in the clinical scoring system. A total score of more than 8 was the optimal threshold to predict risk of death for patients who were evaluated within 6 days after symptom onset (area under the curve 0·879, 95% CI 0·855–0·902). For all participants, viraemia was a strong predictor of fatal outcome (all p<0·0001). Ribavirin therapy was effective in reducing CFR from 6·25% (15 of 240 participants) to 1·16% (two of 173 participants), but only in patients with a viral load below 1×106 copies per mL (hazard ratio 9·72, 95% CI 1·30–72·87; p=0·027).
The changing epidemiological features and high CFR of SFTS underscore the necessity of continued surveillance. Early prediction of fatal outcome can be attained by monitoring of clinical and laboratory data. Ribavirin should be applied early, with best results achieved before the viral load reaches 1 × 106 copies per mL.

We assessed the performance of metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) in the diagnosis of infectious encephalitis and meningitis.
This was a prospective multicenter study. Cerebrospinal fluid ...samples from patients with viral encephalitis and/or meningitis, tuberculous meningitis, bacterial meningitis, fungal meningitis, and non-central nervous system (CNS) infections were subjected to mNGS.
In total, 213 patients with infectious and non-infectious CNS diseases were finally enrolled from November 2016 to May 2019; the mNGS-positive detection rate of definite CNS infections was 57.0%. At a species-specific read number (SSRN) ≥2, mNGS performance in the diagnosis of definite viral encephalitis and/or meningitis was optimal (area under the curve AUC = 0.659, 95% confidence interval CI = 0.566-0.751); the positivity rate was 42.6%. At a genus-specific read number ≥1, mNGS performance in the diagnosis of tuberculous meningitis (definite or probable) was optimal (AUC=0.619, 95% CI=0.516-0.721); the positivity rate was 27.3%. At SSRNs ≥5 or 10, the diagnostic performance was optimal for definite bacterial meningitis (AUC=0.846, 95% CI = 0.711-0.981); the sensitivity was 73.3%. The sensitivities of mNGS (at SSRN ≥2) in the diagnosis of cryptococcal meningitis and cerebral aspergillosis were 76.92 and 80%, respectively.
mNGS of cerebrospinal fluid effectively identifies pathogens causing infectious CNS diseases. mNGS should be used in conjunction with conventional microbiological testing.

In this study, a composite adsorbent (CCN-PEI) composed of carboxylated cellulose nanocrystals (CCN) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) was prepared through an amidation reaction between the carboxyl groups of the CCN and the amine groups of the PEI. The adsorption performance of the CCN-PEI was tested by removing Cr(VI) ions from aqueous solutions. The physicochemical properties of the CCN and the Cr(VI) ion-loaded CCN-PEI were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. To investigate the adsorption kinetics of Cr(VI) ions onto this newly developed CCN-PEI, we performed experiments under different adsorption conditions, by varying the contact time, solution pH, initial Cr(VI) ion concentration, and adsorption temperature. The prepared CCN-PEI exhibited an encouraging uptake capacity of 358.42mg×g−1. The adsorption process was fast: within the first 100min, Cr(VI) ion adsorption onto the CCN-PEI was about 65%, and the adsorption equilibrium was reached within 250min. Kinetics experiments indicated that the adsorption process could be described by a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Furthermore, our adsorption equilibrium data fit the Langmuir isotherms well. The calculated thermodynamic parameters, such as the free energy change (ΔG=−2.93kJ×mol−1), enthalpy change (ΔH=−5.69kJ×mol−1), and entropy change (ΔS=−9.14kJ×mol−1), indicate that the adsorption of Cr(VI) ions onto CCN-PEI was a spontaneous exothermic process. Regeneration tests indicated that CCN-PEI showed good durability and good efficiency for repeated Cr(VI) adsorptions. Based on the results obtained in this work, it can be concluded that CCN-PEI is a potentially effective adsorbent for removing Cr(VI) ions from aqueous solutions.
