All laser-driven entangling operations for trapped-ion qubits have hitherto been performed without control of the optical phase of the light field, which precludes independent tuning of the carrier ...and motional coupling. By placing ^{88}Sr^{+} ions in a λ=674 nm standing wave, whose relative position is controlled to ≈λ/100, we suppress the carrier coupling by a factor of 18, while coherently enhancing the spin-motion coupling. We experimentally demonstrate that the off-resonant carrier coupling imposes a speed limit for conventional traveling-wave Mølmer-Sørensen gates; we use the standing wave to surpass this limit and achieve a gate duration of 15 μs, restricted by the available laser power.
We present the results of an investigation of the sequence of events from the Sun to the Earth that ultimately led to the 88 major geomagnetic storms (defined by minimum Dst less than or equal to ...-100 nT) that occurred during 1996 - 2005. The results are achieved through cooperative efforts that originated at the Living with a Star (LWS) Coordinated Data- Analysis Workshop (CDAW) held at George Mason University in March 2005. Based on careful examination of the complete array of solar and in-situ solar wind observations, we have identified and characterized, for each major geomagnetic storm, the overall solar-interplanetary (solar-IP) source type, the time, velocity and angular width of the source coronal mass ejection (CME), the type and heliographic location of the solar source region, the structure of the transient solar wind flow with the storm-driving component specified, the arrival time of shock/disturbance, and the start and ending times of the corresponding IP CME (ICME). The storm-driving component, which possesses a prolonged and enhanced southward magnetic field (B(sub s)) may be an ICME, the sheath of shocked plasma (SH) upstream of an ICME, a corotating interaction region (CIR), or a combination of these structures. We classify the Solar-IP sources into three broad types: (1) S-type, in which the storm is associated with a single ICME and a single CME at the Sun; (2) M-type, in which the storm is associated with a complex solar wind flow produced by multiple interacting ICMEs arising from multiple halo CMEs launched from the Sun in a short period; (3) C-type, in which the storm is associated with a CIR formed at the leading edge of a high speed stream originating from a solar coronal hole (CH). For the 88 major storms, the S-type, M-type and C-type events number 53 (60%): 24 (27%) and 11 (13%), respectively. For the 85 events for which the surface source regions could be investigated, 54 (63%) of the storms originated in solar active regions, 10 (12%) in quiet Sun regions associated with quiescent filaments or filament channels, and 11 (13%) were associated with coronal holes. Remarkably, 10 (12%) CME-driven events showed no sign of eruptive features on the surface (e.g., no flare, no coronal dimming, and no loop arcade, etc), even though all the available solar observation in a suitable time period were carefully examined. Thus, while it is generally true that a major geomagnetic storm is more likely to be driven by a front-side fast halo CME associated with a major flare, our study indicates a broad distribution of source properties. The implications of the results for space weather forecasting are briefly discussed.
Rapid-onset dystonia-parkinsonism (RDP) (also known as DYT12) is characterized by the abrupt onset of dystonia and parkinsonism and is caused by mutations in the ATP1A3 gene. We obtained clinical ...data and sequenced the ATP1A3 gene in 49 subjects from 21 families referred with 'possible' RDP, and performed a genotype-phenotype analysis. Of the new families referred for study only 3 of 14 families (21%) demonstrated a mutation in the ATP1A3 gene, but no new mutations were identified beyond our earlier report of 6. Adding these to previously reported families, we found mutations in 36 individuals from 10 families including 4 de novo mutations and excluded mutations in 13 individuals from 11 families. The phenotype in mutation positive patients included abrupt onset of dystonia with features of parkinsonism, a rostrocaudal gradient, and prominent bulbar findings. Other features found in some mutation carriers included common reports of triggers, minimal or no tremor at onset, occasional mild limb dystonia before the primary onset, lack of response to dopaminergic medications, rare abrupt worsening of symptoms later in life, stabilization of symptoms within a month and minimal improvement overall. In comparing ATP1A3 mutation positive and negative patients, we found that tremor at onset of symptoms, a reversed rostrocaudal gradient, and significant limb pain exclude a diagnosis of RDP. A positive family history is not required. Genetic testing for the ATP1A3 gene is recommended when abrupt onset, rostrocaudal gradient and prominent bulbar findings are present.
To describe the characteristics and outcomes of patients with COVID-19 admitted to intensive care units (ICUs) during the initial months of the pandemic in Australia.

The median age of the 204 patients with COVID-19 admitted to intensive care was 63.5 years (IQR, 53-72 years); 140 were men (69%). The most frequent comorbid conditions were obesity (40% of patients), diabetes (28%), hypertension treated with angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors or angiotensin II receptor blockers (24%), and chronic cardiac disease (20%); 73 patients (36%) reported no comorbidity. The most frequent source of infection was overseas travel (114 patients, 56%). Median peak ICU bed occupancy was 14% (IQR, 9-16%). Invasive ventilation was provided for 119 patients (58%). Median length of ICU stay was greater for invasively ventilated patients than for non-ventilated patients (16 days; IQR, 9-28 days v 3 days; IQR, 2-5 days), as was ICU mortality (26 deaths, 22%; 95% CI, 15-31% v four deaths, 5%; 95% CI, 1-12%). Higher Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE-II) scores on ICU day 1 (adjusted hazard ratio aHR, 1.15; 95% CI, 1.09-1.21) and chronic cardiac disease (aHR, 3.38; 95% CI, 1.46-7.83) were each associated with higher ICU mortality.
Until the end of June 2020, mortality among patients with COVID-19 who required invasive ventilation in Australian ICUs was lower and their ICU stay longer than reported overseas. Our findings highlight the importance of ensuring adequate local ICU capacity, particularly as the pandemic has not yet ended.
Sea ice production is critical to ocean overturning. Brine released within Antarctic polynyas transforms surface water into denser Shelf Water (SW). In spite of the persistent Dalton Polynya, SW is ...absent off Sabrina Coast. To explain its passive role in‐situ and remote datasets for 2003–2015 are analyzed. Combined volume export near the shelf break and inshore volume change render an average sea ice production of 197.41 km3 per year (4.6 m/yr productivity), highly correlated (0.95) to divergent interior sea ice motion. Meltwater input of 157.5 Gt/yr is required to match the salinity of a prominent subsurface Thermostad measured in 2014–2015. SW formed during 2003–2008 but halted in 2009–2011, when summer sea ice divergence and export were at a minimum (<10 km3), significantly freshening the Thermostad (−5.07 ΔS per decade). Large sea ice export (>30 km3) increased its salinity (2.16 ΔS per decade) since 2012.

Some coastal areas around Antarctica remain free of ice during winter, while still producing sea ice pushed away by strong winds. In determining the stability of upper waters the salt rejected during sea ice formation at some of these coastal polynyas competes with freshwater inputs from melting glaciers and ice shelves. Estimated sea ice productivity at Dalton Polynya off the Sabrina Coast is about 2.5 times higher than at Mertz Polynya off the Adelie Coast, where convection of dense Shelf Water (SW) takes place regularly. In 2014 and 2015 the first measurements in the Sabrina Basin did not reveal SW at the bottom, but a thick subsurface layer with near‐freezing temperature that indicated a large injection of meltwater from Moscow University Ice Shelf. The estimated 2003–2015 history of this Thermostad Water (ThW) salinity suggests interminent convection at the Dalton Polynya. Large summer export of sea ice volume during 2003–2008 rendered salinities higher than the critical salinity to form dense SW. Minimum regional atmospheric forcing diminished sea ice export and suppressed convection during 2008–2011. ThW salinity climbed back starting in 2012 due to large sea ice production, suggesting that convection in the Sabrina Basin could potentially have resumed by 2017.

Critical illness leading to prolonged length of stay (LOS) in an intensive care unit (ICU) is associated with significant mortality and resource utilization. This study assessed the independent ...effect of ICU LOS on in-hospital and long-term mortality after hospital discharge.
Clinical and mortality data of 22 298 patients, aged 16 yr and older, admitted to ICU between 1987 and 2002 were included in this linked-data cohort study. Cox's regression with restricted cubic spline function was used to model the effect of LOS on in-hospital and long-term mortality after adjusting for age, gender, acute physiology score (APS), maximum number of organ failures, era of admission, elective admission, Charlson's co-morbidity index, and diagnosis. The variability each predictor explained was calculated by the percentage of the χ2 statistic contribution to the total χ2 statistic.
Most hospital deaths occurred within the first few days of ICU admission. Increasing LOS in ICU was not associated with an increased risk of in-hospital mortality after adjusting for other covariates, but was associated with an increased risk of long-term mortality after hospital discharge. The variability on the long-term mortality effect associated with ICU LOS (2.3%) appeared to reach a plateau after the first 10 days in ICU and was not as important as age (35.8%), co-morbidities (18.6%), diagnosis (10.9%), and APS (3.6%).
LOS in ICU was not an independent risk factor for in-hospital mortality, but it had a small effect on long-term mortality after hospital discharge after adjustment for other risk factors.
An analysis of the uncertainties in the calculation of the amount of gas absorbed or desorbed by a sample has been made for the manometric or Sieverts technique, commonly used for the determination ...of hydrogen uptake on potential hydrogen storage materials. The analytical derivations provide a means to calculate the uncertainty in each step of a hydrogen absorption isotherm. In addition, a Sieverts system is modelled to allow a detailed investigation of the effect of volumes and other parameters as well as the relative impact of the different measurement uncertainties. Reliable uncertainty estimates are especially important for authoritative measurements of gas uptake by carbons and other nanostructured materials used for hydrogen storage.
We propose a new probe of the dependence of the fine-structure constant α on a strong gravitational field using metal lines in the spectra of white-dwarf stars. Comparison of laboratory spectra with ...far-UV astronomical spectra from the white-dwarf star G191-B2B recorded by the Hubble Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph gives limits of Δα/α=(4.2±1.6)×10(-5) and (-6.1±5.8)×10(-5) from FeV and NiV spectra, respectively, at a dimensionless gravitational potential relative to Earth of Δφ≈5×10(-5). With better determinations of the laboratory wavelengths of the lines employed these results could be improved by up to 2 orders of magnitude.
Early support for children with developmental disabilities is crucial but frequently unavailable in low-resource settings. We conducted a mixed-methods evaluation to assess the feasibility, ...acceptability, and impact of a programme of early detection and intervention for young children with developmental disabilities in Western Uganda.
Early child development training for healthcare workers (HCWs) was implemented in three rural districts, and attendance was tracked. HCW knowledge and confidence were assessed pre-/post-intervention, and referral numbers tracked to evaluate impact. Facilitators were trained and mentored to deliver a participatory, group, early intervention programme (EIP) for young children with developmental disabilities and their families. Facilitators were tracked as they were identified, trained, and delivered the intervention, and attendance of families was tracked. Pre-/post-intervention assessments evaluated changes in family quality of life (PedsQL 2.0, Family Impact Module), and child nutritional outcomes. Focus group discussions with stakeholders also assessed feasibility, acceptability and impact.
Overall, 93 HCWs from 45 healthcare facilities received training. In the pre-/post-evaluation, median knowledge and confidence scores increased significantly (from 4.0 to 7.0 and from 2.7 to 4.7, respectively (p < 0.001)). HCWs reported feeling empowered to refer and offer care for families with a young child with disability. Referral rates increased significantly from 148 to 251 per annum (70%; p = 0.03). Eleven EIP facilitators were trained, and all delivered the intervention; 84 families were enrolled, of which 78% attended at least 6 out of 10 modules. Amongst those with paired pre-/post-intervention data (n = 48), total family quality of life scores increased significantly (21%, p < 0.001). Improvements were seen across all domains of quality of life, with the largest impacts on emotional functioning and social functioning (p < 0.001). The programme was acceptable to caregivers and facilitators. Caregivers reported improved knowledge, family relationships, hope, emotional wellbeing, and reduced self-stigma.
A programme of early detection and intervention for children with early developmental disabilities and their families was feasible and acceptable in a rural community-based Ugandan setting. HCW training positively impacted knowledge, confidence, attitudes, and referral rates. Families enrolled to the EIP reported significant improvements in quality of life. Important programmatic barriers identified included geographical spread, poverty, gender inequality, and stigma.

, the coiled-coil lipoprotein Lpp contributes the only covalent linkage between the outer membrane and the underlying peptidoglycan layer. Using proteomics, molecular dynamics, and a synthetic lethal screen, we show that lengthening Lpp to the upper limit does not change the spatial constraint but is accommodated by other factors which thereby become essential for viability. Our findings demonstrate
expressing elongated Lpp does not simply enlarge the periplasm in response, but the bacteria accommodate by a combination of tilting Lpp and reducing the amount of the covalent bridge. By genetic screening, we identified all of the genes in
that become essential in order to enact this adaptation, and by quantitative proteomics discovered that very few proteins need to be up- or down-regulated in steady-state levels in order to accommodate the longer Lpp. We observed increased levels of factors determining cell stiffness, a decrease in membrane integrity, an increased membrane vesiculation and a dependance on otherwise non-essential tethers to maintain lipid transport and peptidoglycan biosynthesis. Further this has implications for understanding how spatial constraint across the envelope controls processes such as flagellum-driven motility, cellular signaling, and protein translocation.
