Snow is Earth's most climatically sensitive land cover type. Traditional snow metrics may not be able to adequately capture the changing nature of snow cover. For example, April 1 snow water ...equivalent (SWE) has been an effective index for streamflow forecasting, but it cannot express the effects of midwinter melt events, now expected in warming snow climates, nor can we assume that station‐based measurements will be representative of snow conditions in future decades. Remote sensing and climate model data provide capacity for a suite of multi‐use snow metrics from local to global scales. Such indicators need to be simple enough to “tell the story” of snowpack changes over space and time, but not overly simplistic or overly complicated in their interpretation. We describe a suite of spatially explicit, multi‐temporal snow metrics based on global satellite data from NASA's Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and downscaled climate model output for the U.S. We describe and provide examples for Snow Cover Frequency (SCF), Snow Disappearance Date (SDD), At‐Risk Snow (ARS), and Frequency of a Warm Winter (FWW). Using these retrospective and prospective snow metrics, we assess the current and future snow‐related conditions in three hydroclimatically different U.S. watersheds: the Truckee, Colorado Headwaters, and Upper Connecticut. In the two western U.S. watersheds, SCF and SDD show greater sensitivity to annual differences in snow cover compared with data from the ground‐based Snow Telemetry (SNOTEL) network. The eastern U.S. watershed does not have a ground‐based network of data, so these MODIS‐derived metrics provide uniquely valuable snow information. The ARS and FWW metrics show that the Truckee Watershed is highly vulnerable to conversion from snowfall to rainfall (ARS) and midwinter melt events (FWW) throughout the seasonal snow zone. In comparison, the Colorado Headwaters and Upper Connecticut Watersheds are colder and much less vulnerable through mid‐ and late‐century.
New snow metrics Snow Cover Frequency (SCF), Snow Disappearance Date (SDD), Frequency of a Warm Winter (FWW) and At‐Risk Snow (ARS), are produced on Google Earth Engine (GEE). We applied these metrics to three U.S. watersheds: the Truckee, Colorado Headwaters, and Upper Connecticut. SCF and SDD are sensitive to yearly changes in snow cover. Future winters in the Truckee will be warmer with little snow whereas the other watersheds will have longer duration snow cover, lower FWW, and less ARS.
Paracrine release of ovine interferon tau (oIFNT) from the conceptus alters release of endometrial prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF) and prevents luteolysis. Endocrine release of oIFNT into the uterine ...vein occurs by Day 15 of pregnancy and may impart resistance of the corpus luteum (CL) to PGF. It was hypothesized that infusion of recombinant oIFNT (roIFNT) into the uterine or jugular veins on Day 10 of the estrous cycle would protect the CL against exogenous PGF-induced luteolysis. Osmotic pumps were surgically installed in 24 ewes to deliver bovine serum albumin (BSA; n = 12) or roIFNT (200 μg/day; n = 12) for 24 h into the uterine vein. Six ewes in each treatment group received a single injection of PGF (4 mg/58 kg body weight) 12 h after pump installation. In a second experiment, BSA or roIFNT was delivered at 20 or 200 μg/day into the uterine vein or 200 μg/day into the jugular vein for 72 h in 30 ewes. One half of these ewes received an injection of PGF 24 h after pump installation. Concentrations of progesterone in serum declined in BSA-treated ewes injected with PGF, but were sustained in all ewes infused with 20 μg/day of roIFNT into the uterine vein and 200 μg of roIFNT into the jugular vein followed 24 h later with injection of PGF. All concentrations of roIFNT and modes of delivery (uterine or jugular vein) increased luteal concentrations of IFN-stimulated gene (i.e., ISG15) mRNA. Infusion of 200 μg of IFNT over 24 h induced greater mRNA concentrations for cell survival genes, such as BCL2-like 1 (BCL2L1 or Bcl-xL), serine/threonine kinase (AKT), and X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis (XIAP) and decreased prostaglandin F receptor (PTGFR) mRNA concentrations, when compared to controls. It is concluded that endocrine delivery of roIFNT, regardless of route (uterine or jugular vein), effectively protects CL from the luteolytic actions of PGF by mechanisms that involve ISGs and stabilization of cell survival genes.

The antiviral activity of interferon (IFN) increases in uterine vein serum (UVS) during early pregnancy in sheep. This antiviral activity in UVS collected on Day 15 of pregnancy is blocked by ...anti-IFN-tau (anti-IFNT) antibodies. Conceptus-derived IFNT was hypothesized to induce IFN-stimulated gene (ISG) expression in endometrium and extrauterine tissues during pregnancy. To test this hypothesis, blood was collected from ewes on Days 12-16 of the estrous cycle or pregnancy. Serum progesterone was >1.7 ng/ml in pregnant (P) and nonpregnant (NP) ewes until Day 13, then declined to <0.6 ng/ml by Day 15 in NP ewes. A validated IFNT radioimmunoassay detected IFNT in uterine flushings (UFs) on Days 13-16 and in UVS on Days 15-16 of pregnancy. IFNT detection in UF correlated with paracrine induction of ISGs in the endometrium and occurred prior to the inhibition of estrogen receptor 1 and oxytocin receptor expression in uterine epithelia on Day 14 of pregnancy. Induction of ISG mRNAs in corpus luteum (CL) and liver tissue occurred by Day 14 and in peripheral blood mononuclear cells by Day 15 in P ewes. Expression of mRNAs for IFN signal transducers and ISGs were greater in the CL of P than that of NP ewes on Day 14. It is concluded that: 1) paracrine actions of IFNT coincide with detection of IFNT in UF; 2) endocrine action of IFNT ensues through induction of ISGs in peripheral tissues; and 3) IFNT can be detected in UVS, but not until Days 15-16 of pregnancy, which may be limited by the sensitivity of the IFNT radioimmunoassay.
Intestinal malrotation is a continuum of congenital anomalies due to lack of rotation or incomplete rotation of the fetal intestine around the superior mesenteric artery axis. The abnormal bowel ...fixation (by mesenteric bands) or absence of fixation of portions of the bowel increases the risk of bowel obstruction, acute or chronic volvulus, and bowel necrosis. The clinical presentation of patients with malrotation without, with intermittent, or with chronic volvulus can be problematic, with an important minority presenting late or having atypical or chronic symptoms, such as intermittent vomiting, abdominal pain, duodenal obstruction, or failure to thrive. The diagnosis is heavily reliant on imaging. Upper GI series remain the gold standard with the normal position of the duodenojejunal junction lateral to the left-sided pedicles of the vertebral body, at the level of the duodenal bulb on frontal views and posterior (retroperitoneal) on lateral views. However, a variety of conditions might influence the position of the duodenojejunal junction, potentially leading to a misdiagnosis of malrotation. Such conditions include improper technique, gastric over distension, splenomegaly, renal or retroperitoneal tumors, liver transplant, small bowel obstruction, the presence of properly or malpositioned enteric tubes, and scoliosis. All of these may cause the duodenojejunal junction to be displaced. We present a series of cases highlighting conditions that mimic malrotation without volvulus to increase the practicing radiologist awareness and help minimize interpretation errors.

This report demonstrates a long-term positive treatment effect using chemotherapy followed by sunitinib in an advanced thymic carcinoma. We are not aware of other reports of pediatric patients with metastatic thymic carcinoma treated with sunitinib maintenance who maintained a durable response for this prolonged period of time.

Cell fate decisions during development are governed by multi-factorial regulatory mechanisms including chromatin remodeling, DNA methylation, binding of transcription factors to specific loci, RNA ...transcription and protein synthesis. However, the mechanisms by which such regulatory "dimensions" coordinate cell fate decisions are currently poorly understood. Here we quantified the multi-dimensional molecular changes that occur in mouse embryonic stem cells (mESCs) upon depletion of Estrogen related receptor beta (Esrrb), a key pluripotency regulator. Comparative analyses of expression changes subsequent to depletion of Esrrb or Nanog, indicated that a system of interlocked feed-forward loops involving both factors, plays a central part in regulating the timing of mESC fate decisions. Taken together, our meta-analyses support a hierarchical model in which pluripotency is maintained by an Oct4-Sox2 regulatory module, while the timing of differentiation is regulated by a Nanog-Esrrb module.
