In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) via a randomized controlled trial (RCT) and a retrospective study.
Subjects admitted ...to 11 designated public hospitals in Taiwan between April 1 and May 31, 2020, with COVID-19 diagnosis confirmed by pharyngeal real-time RT-PCR for SARS-CoV-2, were randomized at a 2:1 ratio and stratified by mild or moderate illness. HCQ (400 mg twice for 1 d or HCQ 200 mg twice daily for 6 days) was administered. Both the study and control group received standard of care (SOC). Pharyngeal swabs and sputum were collected every other day. The proportion and time to negative viral PCR were assessed on day 14. In the retrospective study, medical records were reviewed for patients admitted before March 31, 2020.
There were 33 and 37 cases in the RCT and retrospective study, respectively. In the RCT, the median times to negative rRT-PCR from randomization to hospital day 14 were 5 days (95% CI; 1, 9 days) and 10 days (95% CI; 2, 12 days) for the HCQ and SOC groups, respectively (p = 0.40). On day 14, 81.0% (17/21) and 75.0% (9/12) of the subjects in the HCQ and SOC groups, respectively, had undetected virus (p = 0.36). In the retrospective study, 12 (42.9%) in the HCQ group and 5 (55.6%) in the control group had negative rRT-PCR results on hospital day 14 (p = 0.70).
Neither study demonstrated that HCQ shortened viral shedding in mild to moderate COVID-19 subjects.

The huge land areas in China provide highly diverse habitats for macrofungi. Of these macrofungi, many are directly related to people’s daily life and have been utilized by ancient Chinese for at ...least 6800 years. In this study, we evaluate the current known resource diversity of Chinese macrofungi. A total of 1662 taxa are summarized, and all species names and their authorities have been checked and corrected according to authentic mycological databases. Among the 1662 taxa, 1020, 692, and 480 are considered to be edible, medicinal and poisonous mushrooms, respectively. A few of edible macrofungi in China are commonly used for commercial production. All known medicinal functions are labeled for medicinal species. The most common medicinal functions possessed by Chinese macrofungi are antitumor or anticancer, followed by antioxidant and antimicrobial. A total of 277 Chinese macrofungi are edible simultaneously with certain medicinal functions and without known toxicity. These species could be treated as “Gold Mushrooms”. Contrarily, 193 edible and/or medicinal species are also recognized as poisonous mushrooms. To avoid poisoning caused by these species, ingestion either in a proper way or in small amounts is important. However, the mycotoxins metabolized by these poisonous species could be a huge wealth of natural products yet to be explored. How to utilize these Chinese macrofungal resources is a critical to benefit humans worldwide.
This work synthesizes a new bifunctional furan derivative (PDMS‐FBZ) through a sequence of hydrosilylation of nadic anhydride (ND) with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), reaction of the product with ...p‐aminophenol to form PDMS‐ND‐OH, and its subsequent Mannich reaction with furfurylamine and CH2O. Then, the main chain‐type copolymer PDMS‐DABZ‐DDSQ is prepared through a Diels–Alder (DA) cycloaddition of PDMS‐FBZ with the bismaleimide‐functionalized double‐decker silsesquioxane derivative DDSQ‐BMI. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy confirm the structure of this PDMS‐DABZ‐DDSQ copolymer; differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) reveal it to have high flexibility and high thermal stability (Tg = 177 °C; Td10 = 441 °C; char yield = 60.1 wt%); contact angle measurements reveal a low surface free energy (18.18 mJ m−2) after thermal ring‐opening polymerization, because the inorganic PDMS and DDSQ units are dispersed well, as revealed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). This PDMS‐DABZ‐DDSQ copolymer possesses reversible properties arising from the DA and retro‐DA reactions, suggesting its possible application as a functional high‐performance material.

Due to its significant applications in many relevant fields, light detection in the solar‐blind deep‐ultraviolet (DUV) wavelength region is a subject of great interest for both scientific and ...industrial communities. The rapid advances in preparing high‐quality ultrawide‐bandgap (UWBG) semiconductors have enabled the realization of various high‐performance DUV photodetectors (DUVPDs) with different geometries, which provide an avenue for circumventing numerous disadvantages in traditional DUV detectors. This article presents a comprehensive review of the applications of inorganic UWBG semiconductors for solar‐blind DUV light detection in the past several decades. Different kinds of DUVPDs, which are based on varied UWBG semiconductors including Ga2O3, MgxZn1−xO, III‐nitride compounds (AlxGa1−xN/AlN and BN), diamond, etc., and operate on different working principles, are introduced and discussed systematically. Some emerging techniques to optimize device performance are addressed as well. Finally, the existing techniques are summarized and future challenges are proposed in order to shed light on development in this critical research field.

To evaluate the performance of machine learning (ML) algorithms and to compare them with logistic regression for the prediction of risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), chronic kidney disease ...(CKD), diabetes (DM), and hypertension (HTN) and in a prospective cohort study using simple clinical predictors.
We conducted analyses in a population-based cohort study in Asian adults (n = 6,762). Five different ML models were considered—single-hidden-layer neural network, support vector machine, random forest, gradient boosting machine, and k-nearest neighbor—and were compared with standard logistic regression.
The incidences at 6 years of CVD, CKD, DM, and HTN cases were 4.0%, 7.0%, 9.2%, and 34.6%, respectively. Logistic regression reached the highest area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for CKD (0.905 0.88, 0.93) and DM (0.768 0.73, 0.81) predictions. For CVD and HTN, the best models were neural network (0.753 0.70, 0.81) and support vector machine (0.780 0.747, 0.812), respectively. However, the differences with logistic regression were small (less than 1%) and nonsignificant. Logistic regression, gradient boosting machine, and neural network were systematically ranked among the best models.
Logistic regression yields as good performance as ML models to predict the risk of major chronic diseases with low incidence and simple clinical predictors.
•Low-dimensional settings include low number of events and predictors.•In such settings, logistic regression yields as good performance as ML models.•ML techniques may not be warranted in such cases.
The novel growth of cesium lead halide perovskite thin films, which are prepared through thousand‐layer rapid alternative deposition, is performed by developing an active perovskite film consisting ...of a layer‐by‐layer structure. This method is considerably more difficult to be implemented from the solution process. The obtained thin film morphology and characteristics are distinguished from that of the traditional a few layers and two‐material codeposition. These alternative deposited perovskites are integrated with vacuum‐deposited carrier‐transporting layers and electrodes, and all vacuum‐sublimed perovskite solar cells exhibit an outstanding power conversion efficiency of 13.0%. The use of these devices for environmental light energy harvesting provides a power conversion efficiency of 33.9% under fluorescent light illumination of 1000 lux.
Rapid alternative deposition provides new approaches for Cs‐based perovskite fabrication. The thousand‐layer CsPbI2Br thin films obtained through this method exhibit a smooth surface and high crystallinity, and the solar cell devices deliver excellent performance under both 1‐sun solar and fluorescent light illumination.
Conjugated polymer sorting is currently the best method to select large‐diameter single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with tunable narrow chirality in the adaption of highly desired electronics ...applications. The acceleration on conjugated polymers–SWCNTs interaction with long‐term stability through different molecular designs; for example, longer alkyl side‐chains or conjugation moieties have been extensively developed in recent years. However, the importance of the macromolecules with abundant van der Waals (VDW) interaction in the conjugated‐based block copolymer system acting during SWCNTs sorting is not clearly demonstrated. In this work, a conjugated diblock copolymer involving polyisoprene (PI) and highly dense π‐interaction of poly (9,9‐dioctylfluorene) (PFO) is utilized to investigate the impact of natural rubber PI physical interaction on sorting effectiveness and stability. Through the rational design of diblock copolymer, PFO with ≈1200 isoprene units can remarkably enhance SWCNTs sorting ability and selected few chiralities with a diameter of ≈0.83–1.1 nm and highly stable solution for more than 1 year. The introduction of long‐chain PI system is attributed not only to form weak VDW force with SWCNTs and strengthen the wrapping of PFO around the semiconducting SWCNTs but also to act as a barrier among nanotubes to prevent reaggregation of sorted SWCNTs.
The addition of long‐chain PI in a system of conjugated diblock copolymer can provide weak van der Waals force and π–π stacking with single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT), which is attributed not only to strengthen the wrapping of poly (9,9‐dioctylfluorene) around SWCNTs to enhance SWCNTs sorting ability but also to act as a barrier to prevents re‐aggregation of sorted SWCNTs solution.
Deep learning for digital pathology is hindered by the extremely high spatial resolution of whole-slide images (WSIs). Most studies have employed patch-based methods, which often require detailed ...annotation of image patches. This typically involves laborious free-hand contouring on WSIs. To alleviate the burden of such contouring and obtain benefits from scaling up training with numerous WSIs, we develop a method for training neural networks on entire WSIs using only slide-level diagnoses. Our method leverages the unified memory mechanism to overcome the memory constraint of compute accelerators. Experiments conducted on a data set of 9662 lung cancer WSIs reveal that the proposed method achieves areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.9594 and 0.9414 for adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma classification on the testing set, respectively. Furthermore, the method demonstrates higher classification performance than multiple-instance learning as well as strong localization results for small lesions through class activation mapping.
ADJUVANT-CTONG1104 (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT01405079), a randomized phase III trial, showed that adjuvant gefitinib treatment significantly improved disease-free survival (DFS) versus ...vinorelbine plus cisplatin (VP) in patients with epidermal growth factor receptor (
) mutation-positive resected stage II-IIIA (N1-N2) non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Here, we report the final overall survival (OS) results.
From September 2011 to April 2014, 222 patients from 27 sites were randomly assigned 1:1 to adjuvant gefitinib (n = 111) or VP (n = 111). Patients with resected stage II-IIIA (N1-N2) NSCLC and
-activating mutation were enrolled, receiving gefitinib for 24 months or VP every 3 weeks for four cycles. The primary end point was DFS (intention-to-treat ITT population). Secondary end points included OS, 3-, 5-year (y) DFS rates, and 5-year OS rate. Post hoc analysis was conducted for subsequent therapy data.
Median follow-up was 80.0 months. Median OS (ITT) was 75.5 and 62.8 months with gefitinib and VP, respectively (hazard ratio HR, 0.92; 95% CI, 0.62 to 1.36;
= .674); respective 5-year OS rates were 53.2% and 51.2% (
= .784). Subsequent therapy was administered upon progression in 68.4% and 73.6% of patients receiving gefitinib and VP, respectively. Subsequent targeted therapy contributed most to OS (HR, 0.23; 95% CI, 0.14 to 0.38) compared with no subsequent therapy. Updated 3y DFS rates were 39.6% and 32. 5% with gefitinib and VP (
= .316) and 5y DFS rates were 22. 6% and 23.2% (
= .928), respectively.
Adjuvant therapy with gefitinib in patients with early-stage NSCLC and
mutation demonstrated improved DFS over standard of care chemotherapy. Although this DFS advantage did not translate to a significant OS difference, OS with adjuvant gefitinib was one of the longest observed in this patient group compared with historic data.
