The Metapendulum is a combination of both the simple gravity pendulum and the spring pendulum. Both excite each another and, therefore, can be used as an example of mechanical resonance phenomena. ...The data of a smartphone's accelerometer can be used to record the acceleration of the pendulum during the oscillation movement. With that, the resonance within the system can be visualized.
Strategy instruction and formative feedback are powerful instructional strategies to support learning. However, combining them may not necessarily be effective. Previous research on the combination ...of strategy instruction and feedback produced both additive and reducing effects on learning. It is an open question whether and under which conditions combining strategy instruction and feedback enhances students’ learning.
We investigated potential synergy and interaction effects of combining strategy instruction and feedback on learning in physics, the underlying mechanisms, and their generalizability (elaboration level of feedback, instructional sequence).
We conducted three online experiments (N1 = 437, N2 = 310, N3 = 166) with university students.
In Experiment 1 and 2, in the learning phase, participants read a strategy instruction or no instruction. In a subsequent practice phase, they solved troubleshooting tasks on electric circuits and received either feedback or no feedback. In Experiment 3, students were randomly assigned to one of three conditions (no intervention, learning phase first, practice phase first). We used the same material for all experiments.
In Experiment 1, we found no additive combination effects of strategy instruction and corrective feedback. Surprisingly, for far transfer, corrective feedback reduced the effect of prior instruction. Contrarily, in Experiment 2, we obtained additive effects by combining strategy instruction with elaborated feedback. Experiment 3 showed that these additive findings were irrespective of the instruction-feedback-sequence.
Our findings indicate that the elaboration level of feedback determines whether combining instruction and feedback produces additive or reducing effects.
•Combining strategy instruction and feedback is not necessarily effective.•Providing lower-order (corrective) feedback led to no additive combination effects.•Arousal explained reducing effect on far transfer as a result of negative feedback.•Elaborated feedback could counteract reducing effects and lead to additive effects.•The sequence of strategy instruction and feedback did not matter.

Abstract Fostering digital competencies is an important aspect of pre-service teacher education. However, for physics, there is a lack of systematically surveyed and evidence-based seminars that ...specifically take into account relevant research findings. Thus, we developed a research-based seminar on the effective use of digital media in physics classrooms and investigated its effects on pre-service teachers (PSTs) professional competencies in a mixed-methods design. Our quantitative analyses of different competence components surveyed in a pre-post-design indicate that the seminar leads to an increase in motivation to use digital media in the physics classroom. Nevertheless, no significant increase in digital-media PCK was found, which could be due to the small sample. The seminar design, however, was predominantly evaluated positively by experts and PSTs in guided interviews. Based on the results, it is planned to further refine the original seminar using a Design-Based Research approach.
Health care remains one of the biggest line items in every organization's budget, and it falls to benefits brokers to help their clients figure out how to manage costs in this critical area.
This paper describes a thorough analysis of using PPO to learn kick behaviors with simulated NAO robots in the simspark environment. The analysis includes an investigation of the influence of PPO ...hyperparameters, network size, training setups and performance in real games. We believe to improve the state of the art mainly in four points: first, the kicks are learned with a toed version of the NAO robot, second, we improve the reliability with respect to kickable area and avoidance of falls, third, the kick can be parameterized with desired distance and direction as input to the deep network and fourth, the approach allows to integrate the learned behavior seamlessly into soccer games. The result is a significant improvement of the general level of play.
Occupational formaldehyde exposure occurs during the embalming and preservation of cadavers as well as other work involving cadavers including moving, dissection, transportation, and cremation. This ...study examined formaldehyde exposure during the transportation of cadavers and dissected cadavers between medical universities in Ohio and during transportation between an Ohio and a Michigan medical university. Three events were sampled: one employee in one van during event one and two employees in separate vans during event two. Personal replicate samples were collected from the breathing zones of the workers during the cadaver transport. Transportation time included loading and unloading cadavers. A control vehicle was also sampled. Time-weighted average (TWA) exposure to formaldehyde ranged from 0.36 parts per million (ppm) (0.44 mg/m3) to 0.49 ppm (0.60 mg/m3). Eight-hour TWAs were below the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) permissible exposure limit of 0.75 ppm (0.92 mg/m3). The eight-hour TWAs were below the OSHA action level of 0.5 ppm (0.62 mg/m3). All eight-hour TWAs exceeded the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) ceiling value of 0.3 ppm (0.37 mg/m3). The formaldehyde concentrations by transportation method demonstrated a statistically significant difference between exposures during the cadaver transport, dissected cadaver transport and the control.
