This article explores how two middle school girls told stories of family conflict and trauma through poetry. Situated within literature on critical literacies and trauma studies, the article uses a ...case study approach to consider what happens when stories of trauma emerge within the literacy classroom. The authors explore (1) how the girls used poetry to understand and represent their trauma; (2) how the classroom contexts supported the development and sharing of trauma narratives; and (3) how classroom relationships were affected by the sharing of trauma narratives. The authors argue that the genre of poetry and the classroom contexts supported the girls in asserting "narrative control" and opened up spaces for deeper and more collaborative relationships among members of the classroom community. They also contend that the girls' writing and experiences can prompt reconsideration of what topics are "appropriate" for school.
We analyze the security and feasibility of a protocol for Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), in a context where only one of the two parties trusts his measurement apparatus. This scenario lies naturally ...between standard QKD, where both parties trust their measurement apparatuses, and Device-Independent QKD (DI-QKD), where neither does, and can be a natural assumption in some practical situations. We show that the requirements for obtaining secure keys are much easier to meet than for DI-QKD, which opens promising experimental opportunities. We clarify the link between the security of this one-sided DI-QKD scenario and the demonstration of quantum steering, in analogy to the link between DI-QKD and the violation of Bell inequalities.

The 1964 theorem of John Bell shows that no model that reproduces the predictions of quantum mechanics can simultaneously satisfy the assumptions of locality and determinism. On the other hand, the ...assumptions of
signal locality
plus
predictability
are also sufficient to derive Bell inequalities. This simple theorem, previously noted but published only relatively recently by Masanes, Acin and Gisin, has fundamental implications not entirely appreciated. Firstly, nothing can be concluded about the ontological assumptions of locality or determinism independently of each other—it is possible to reproduce quantum mechanics with deterministic models that violate locality as well as indeterministic models that satisfy locality. On the other hand, the operational assumption of signal locality is an empirically testable (and well-tested) consequence of relativity. Thus Bell inequality violations imply that we can trust that some events are fundamentally
unpredictable
, even if we cannot trust that they are indeterministic. This result grounds the quantum-mechanical prohibition of arbitrarily accurate predictions on the assumption of no superluminal signalling, regardless of any postulates of quantum mechanics. It also sheds a new light on an early stage of the historical debate between Einstein and Bohr.
Background: Actinic prurigo (AP) is an idiopathic familial photodermatitis. AP of the Inuit is rarely reported and poorly characterized. Objective: Our purpose was to examine the clinical features ...and HLA associations of AP in an Inuit population. Methods: Thirty-seven Inuit subjects with AP were administered a questionnaire and underwent a cutaneous examination. Other causes of photosensitivity were excluded. HLA class I typing was performed by polymerase chain reaction and sequence-specific primers and class II typing by polymerase chain reaction and sequence-specific oligonucleotide probes. Results: Subjects were 81.1% female, 67.6% had a family history of photosensitivity, and all experienced seasonal variation. The average age at onset of photosensitivity was 29 years, and only 27% had a trend toward improvement in photosensitivity. Involvement of eyes and nonexposed skin was reported in 62.2% and 18.9% of subjects, respectively. Physical examination revealed involvement of the face (64.9%), lip (32.4%), ear (13.5%), and dorsal aspect of the hand (24.3%). HLA-DRB1*14 was present in 51.2% of subjects and 26.2% of controls (P = .022, odds ratio = 2.975). This is a previously unreported HLA association. Conclusion: AP in the Inuit is a seasonal, pruritic photodermatitis, often commencing in adulthood and worsening over time. A novel association with HLA-DRB1*14 has been discovered. Overall, this novel HLA association, the absence of HLA associations previously reported in non-Inuit populations, and clinical distinguishing features support the concept that AP in the Inuit may have a distinct immunopathogenic basis that translates into a different phenotype. It also raises the question of whether AP in the Inuit is a distinct photosensitivity disorder specific to this group that has been genetically isolated because of geographic and cultural seclusion. Abstract Background Clinical data that support stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) metastatic malignant melanoma (MM) are limited. Furthermore, functional imaging with 18F-fludeoxyglucose ...positron emission tomography (PET) may offer a more accurate post-SBRT assessment. Therefore, we assessed the clinical outcomes and metabolic response of metastatic MM after SBRT. Methods and materials Patients with MM who were treated with SBRT and had pre- and post-PET scans (>1) were included in this study. A total of 390 pre- and post-SBRT PET/computed tomography (CT) scans for 80 metastases were analyzed. The PET metabolic response was evaluated per the PET Response Criteria in Solid Tumors (PERCIST), version 1.0, criteria. Single-fraction equivalent dose (SFED) was calculated as per the standard. The Kaplan-Meier method was used for estimates of overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival. The cumulative incidence method was used to estimate metastasis control (MC). A Wilcoxon test was used to compare survival estimates. The prognostic factors for MC and OS were assessed using the Cox proportional hazards model, and the Likelihood Ratio was also used for comparisons between groups. Results A median of 6 PET scans (range, 2-6 scans) was evaluated for each metastasis. The median SFED was 42.8 Gy (range, 18-56.4 Gy) and the median biologically effective dose was 254.4 Gy2.5 (range, 100.8-540 Gy2.5 ). Twenty percent of patients received chemotherapy and 59% received immunotherapy: granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (64%) and ipilimumab (34%). MC was 94% and 90% at 1 year and 3 years, respectively. The OS was 74% and 27% and 1 year and 3 years, respectively. Complete response was achieved in 90% at a median of 2.8 months (range, 0.4-25.2 months). SFED >24 Gy correlated with improved MC (93% vs 75%, P = .01). Acute and late grade 3+ toxicities were 4% and 11%, respectively, with no grade 5 toxicity. Conclusions Post-SBRT PET/CT for extracranial metastatic MM resulted in high rates of complete response at a median of 2.8 months, and durable MC was achieved with SFED >24 Gy. SBRT, in addition to surgery and ablation, should be discussed with patients with MM, especially those with oligometastases.
To identify the incidence of parapharyngeal space (PPS) recurrences and how they impact survival in advanced-stage soft-palate carcinoma patients.
One hundred thirty-seven patients' charts were ...reviewed from 1971 to 1996. Inclusion criteria were patients who received a per-oral resection, discontinuous neck dissection, and postoperative adjuvant radiation therapy; 15 patients met criteria for inclusion. The incidence of PPS recurrences, regional failure, and survival were endpoints that were analyzed.
There were no local failures in our study. Regional failures excluding the PPS (levels I-V) were 27%, and 40% occurred within the PPS. Cervical adenopathy was associated with 83% of the PPS recurrences. Median survival for PPS recurrences was 26 months, compared with 67 months for levels I-V recurrences (n = ns).
The incidence of PPS recurrences is substantial in advanced-stage soft-palate cancer. PPS recurrences negatively impact survival; without effective salvage techniques for these recurrences or effective adjuvant therapy, poor patient outcomes can be expected.
