Fake news has now grown into a big problem for societies and also a major challenge for people fighting disinformation. This phenomenon plagues democratic elections, reputations of individual persons ...or organizations, and has negatively impacted citizens, (e.g., during the COVID-19 pandemic in the US or Brazil). Hence, developing effective tools to fight this phenomenon by employing advanced Machine Learning (ML) methods poses a significant challenge. The following paper displays the present body of knowledge on the application of such intelligent tools in the fight against disinformation. It starts by showing the historical perspective and the current role of fake news in the information war. Proposed solutions based solely on the work of experts are analysed and the most important directions of the application of intelligent systems in the detection of misinformation sources are pointed out. Additionally, the paper presents some useful resources (mainly datasets useful when assessing ML solutions for fake news detection) and provides a short overview of the most important R&D projects related to this subject. The main purpose of this work is to analyse the current state of knowledge in detecting fake news; on the one hand to show possible solutions, and on the other hand to identify the main challenges and methodological gaps to motivate future research.
•Vitamin D analogues show both prooxidative and antioxidative properties.•Noncalcemic vitamin D derivatives enhance cytotoxic effects of H2O2.•Noncalcemic vitamin D derivatives sensitize human ...immortalized keratinocytes to cisplatin.
Although the skin production of vitamin D is initiated by ultraviolet radiation type B (UVB), the role vitamin D plays in antioxidative or pro-oxidative responses remains to be elucidated. We have used immortalized human HaCaT keratinocytes as a model of proliferating epidermal cells to test the influence of vitamin D on cellular response to H2O2 or the anti-cancer drug, cisplatin. Incubation of keratinocytes with 1,25(OH)2D3 or its low calcemic analogues, 20(OH)D3, 21(OH)pD or calcipotriol, sensitized cells to ROS resulting in more potent inhibition of keratinocyte proliferation by H2O2 in the presence of vitamin D compounds. These results were supported by cell cycle and apoptosis analyses, and measurement of the mitochondrial transmembrane potentials (MMP), however some unique properties of individual secosteroids were observed. Furthermore, in HaCaT keratinocytes treated with H2O2, 1,25(OH)2D3, 21(OH)pD and calcipotriol stimulated the expression of SOD1 and CAT genes, but not SOD2, indicating a possible role of mitochondria in ROS-modulated cell death. 1,25(OH)2D3 also showed a short-term, protective effect on HaCaT keratinocytes, as exemplified by the inhibition of apoptosis and the maintenance of MMP. However, with prolonged incubation with H2O2 or cisplatin, 1,25(OH)2D3 caused an acceleration in the death of the keratinocytes. Therefore, we propose that lead vitamin D derivatives can protect the epidermis against neoplastic transformation secondary to oxidative or UV-induced stress through activation of vitamin D-signaling. Furthermore, our data suggest that treatment with low calcemic vitamin D analogues or the maintenance of optimal level of vitamin D by proper supplementation, can enhance the anticancer efficacy of cisplatin
•polymer coating-dependent topographical and mechanical changes of the surface were detected.•polymer coated bioactive glass scaffolds were characterized with higher average roughness.•polymer coated ...bioactive glass scaffolds were characterized with lower stiffness in the nanoscale.
Composite scaffolds of bioactive glass (SiO2-CaO) and bioresorbable polyesters: poly-l-lactic acid (PLLA) and polycaprolactone (PCL) were produced by polymer coating of porous foams. Their structure and mechanical properties were investigated in micro and nanoscale, by the means of scanning electron microscopy, PeakForce Quantitative Nanomechanical Property Mapping (PF-QNM) atomic force microscopy, micro-computed tomography and contact angle measurements.
This is one of the first studies in which the nanomechanical properties (elastic modulus, adhesion) were measured and mapped simultaneously with topography imaging (PF-QNM AFM) for bioactive glass and bioactive glass – polymer coated scaffolds. Our findings show that polymer coated scaffolds had higher average roughness and lower stiffness in comparison to pure bioactive glass scaffolds. Such coating-dependent scaffold properties may promote different cells-scaffold interaction.
War in Ukraine and the Russian annexation of Crimea are the events that changed the US policy towards Russia. The events in Ukraine forced the United States to take a closer look at Eastern and ...Central Europe. The United States’ policy during the Ukrainian crisis has been limited to sanctions and strong statements so far because in Ukraine there is an asymmetry of interests. Ukraine is much more important to Russia than to the United States. The United States may be willing to support the democratic and western aspiration of Ukrainians but will not risk a major conflict with Russia over it. However the crisis in Ukraine is not only about Ukraine or Russia. It is also about US credibility around the world. Both friends and foes are watching closely the American reaction to the situation. That is why the United States has increased its military presence in those NATO countries that share borders with Russia.
The Museum of Krakow, until recently theHistorical Museum of the City of Krakow, ranks amongthe largest Polish museums, not only within the group ofmunicipal museums. It boasts an exceptionally ...developedinfrastructure and a high number of thematic branches, as wellas multifaceted operations. The analysed monograph, authoredby the Museum’s current Director, presents a long and tedious, albeit systematic process of the Museum’s development overthe period of more than a hundred years within the contextof numerous external conditionings, with the emphasis on theMuseum’s role and importance for the city community and forits culture. Underlining the obvious advantages of the bookand its sizeable factual value, as well as balanced opinions, the reviewer, however, observes its certain defaults anddeficiencies, while also formulating a number of more generalviews going beyond the very matter of the book-related review. The extensive publication in question certainly encourages suchan approach, this unquestionably adding another to its merits.
CORPUS OF THE 19TH CENTURY OF THE WARSAW UNIVERSITY AND IJP PAN
The article describes a historical corpus which documents the 19th and early 20th century. The corpus was created as part of a research ...grant whose objective was to investigate the development of the aspectual system of Polish in the last 250 years against the background of Czech and Russian. An important resource for this investigation was a database of aspectual triplets, which, in turn, was based on materials such as text corpora. Since there was no large corpus of the 19th and early 20th century available, there was a need to bridge this gap. In the course of the project, such corpus was made and it is now publicly accessible with no restrictions. This comprehensive corpus contains over 12 million contemporary words. Its texts originate from major Polish virtual libraries. It is POS-tagged with a tagger dedicated for 19th century texts. A web-based concordancer, an adjusted version of ParaVoz, allows for querying the corpus. The queries may be constrained by metadata.
Computerized linguistic analyses have proven of immense value in comparing and searching through large text collections ("corpora"), including those deposited on the Internet - indeed, it would ...nowadays be hard to imagine browsing the Web without, for instance, search algorithms extracting most appropriate keywords from documents. This paper describes how such corpus-linguistic concepts can be extended to chemistry based on characteristic "chemical words" that span more than traditional functional groups and, instead, look at common structural fragments molecules share. Using these words, it is possible to quantify the diversity of chemical collections/databases in new ways and to define molecular "keywords" by which such collections are best characterized and annotated.
Gospodarka Niemiec w światowej przestrzeni odgrywa znaczącą rolę i musi dbać o utrzymanie swojej pozycji wśród liderów. Proces ten ilustruje analiza międzynarodowej wymiany handlowej gospodarki niemieckiej w latach 1991–2019. Cechą charakterystyczną obrotów jest dodatnie saldo handlowe w zakresie wartości, natomiast ujemne, w zakresie masy towarowej. Dominujące znaczenie w eksporcie mają produkty wymagające nakładów myśli technicznej (maszyny i urządzenia, chemikalia), natomiast w zakresie importu produkty mniej przetworzone, głównie paliwa, surowce i artykuły spożywcze.
Angiotensin II (Ang II) induces deleterious changes in cellular iron metabolism and increases the generation of reactive oxygen species. This leads to an impairment of neuronal and vascular function. ...However, the mechanism underpinning Ang II-induced changes in iron metabolism is not known. We hypothesized that Ang II-induced ferritin degradation and an increase in the labile iron pool are mediated by the c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK)/p66Shc/ITCH signaling pathway. We show that Ang II treatment induced ferritin degradation in an endothelial cell lines derived from the bovine stem pulmonary artery (CPAE), human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC), and HT22 neuronal cells. Ferritin degradation was accompanied by an increase in the labile iron pool, as determined by changes in calcein fluorescence. The JNK inhibitor SP600125 abolished Ang II-induced ferritin degradation. Furthermore, the effect of Ang II on ferritin levels was completely abolished in cells transfected with vectors encoding catalytically inactive variants of JNK1 or JNK2. CPAE cells expressing inactive ITCHor p66Shc (substrates of JNK kinases) were completely resistant to Ang II-induced ferritin degradation. These observations suggest that Ang II-induced ferritin degradation and, hence, elevation of the levels of highly reactive iron, are mediated by the JNK/p66Shc/ITCH signaling pathway.
