This research aimed to evaluate 58 barley cultivars for resistance to net blotch caused by Drechslera teres and to determine the variability of isolates of the pathogen and frequency of symptoms of the disease. The cultivar reaction was estimated with aid of a 0 to 4 scale, in which zero represented the absence of symptom and 4 the typical symptoms of disease susceptibility. The same method was used to determine de pathogenic variability of isolates originated from the Southern Brazil. Six isolates of good sporulation capacity were used for comparison of number of lesions and disease severity. The cultivars showed differences in reaction to net blotch, and the cultivars BR 2, EMBRAPA 43 and PFC 8590 were identified as sources of moderate resistance to the disease. Test of 25 isolates of D. teres inoculated in concentration of 1.7x10(4) conidia/mL, evidenced significant differences among isolates regarding their virulence. Differentiated virulence patterns of isolates originated from different locations of the South of Brazil were identified by using the Limpert & Müller nomenclature system. The lesion number and severity of the disease were closely related to isolate local of origin.

The occurrence of diseases such as leaf rust (Puccinia triticina) and yellow spot (Drechslera tritici-repentis) can decrease wheat yield. Tins study aimed to evaluate the effect of foliar application ...of potassium silicate (PS) and fungicide on the control of leaf rust and yellow spot in the cultivars Safira and Quartzo. The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block split-split plot design with four replications. The cultivars were randomly assigned to the main plot, and in the subplots, the treatments T1 - control, T2 - fungicide (azoxy strobin 60 g a.i/ha + ciproconazole + 24 g a.i/ha) sprayed at the growth stages 45 (booting) and 58 (heading), T3 - PS (40 g/L) sprayed at growth stages 45 and 58, T4 - PS (40 g/L) and fungicide sprayed, respectively, at growth stages 45 and 58 and T5 - potassium hydroxide (6.5 g/L) sprayed in the growth stages of 45 and 58. The volume used in the sprays was 250 L/ha. The evaluation of leaf rust and yellow spot severity started at 7 days after the first spraying and then every week, in a total of five assessments. Data of disease severity were used to calculate the area under leaf rust progress curve (AULRPC) and the area under yellow spot progress curve (AUYSPC). The PS, at the rate and the number of sprayings, was not efficient to decrease both AUYSPC and AULRPC in the two cultivars.

Abstract – Maize (Zea mays L.) is an important cereal for the state of Santa Catarina. Among the main diseases that affect the crop, fusarium rot stands out it is caused by Fusarium vertcillioides fungus. The fungus causes necrosis in radicle, coleoptile and mesocotyl, which assumes pink-salmon coloration. Finally, the fungus causes damping-off and seedling death. The following control measures can be used: crop rotation, fertilization based on soil analysis, use of healthy seeds, avoidance of sowing in wet, cold and poorly drained soil, seed treatment and use of appropriate plant population density. It is indispensable to apply and integrate these practices for a successful management of the disease.

The White spot (WS), which has the bacterium Pantoea ananatis as the main pathogen, associated with fungal species, like Phaeosphaeria maydis, is a disease that has been causing reductions in the maize yield. Losses can reach up to 60% when susceptible hybrids are used and conditions for the disease are favorable. This study aims to present some information about WS and main control methods. Among the control methods recommended, genetic, cultural and chemical control stand out, but fungicides are the most used tool, highlighting the strobilurin group because it presents the best results.
A field experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of foliar sprays with the following treatments on the downy mildew (Peronospora destructor) and bulb rot (Burkholderia cepacia) in onions: non-treated control, fungicide chlorotalonil/metalaxyl + chlorotalonil, potassium phosphite, foliar fertilizer (03-00-16, N-P-K), bordeaux mixture, bordeaux mixture/potassium phosphite, acibenzolar-S-methyl weekly applied; extract of alga Ulva fasciata and ulvan sprayed every 7, 14 and 21 days. Only the weekly spraying of fungicides and fertilizer (03-00-16, 400 mL/100 L) significantly reduced the mildew severity by 60 and 23%, respectively, but did not increase the bulb yield. The foliar application of potassium rich fertilizers resulted in a higher incidence of rotten bulbs after 5 months in storage. Soluble sugar content and rot incidence of onion bulbs were significantly correlated (-0,629, p < 0,05).
