Two Zn(II) supramolecular isomeric metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) based on well-designed tripodal tris(2-carboxyethyl)isocyanuric acid (H3tci), formulated as (Me2NH2)Zn(tci)·0.5DMF n (1) and ...(Me2NH2)Zn(tci)·2DMF n (2) (Me2NH2 = protonated dimethylamine, DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide) have been solvothermally synthesized and characterized. Compounds 1 and 2 are supramolecular isomers controlled by solvent systems and exhibit a structural progression from a rare two-dimensional kgd sheet to a three-dimensional framework with unusual Lonsdaleite (lon) topology. The structural dissimilarity between them was dependent on the coordination environments of the Zn(II) ion and linking modes of the tci ligand influenced by solvent systems. The photoluminescence behaviors of 1 and 2 are also discussed.
Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is an important high-performance thermoplastic. Its excellent strength, stiffness, toughness, fatigue resistance, biocompatibility, chemical stability and radiolucency ...have made PEEK attractive in dental and orthopedic applications. However, PEEK has an inherently hydrophobic and chemically inert surface, which has restricted its widespread use in clinical applications, especially in bonding with dental resin composites. Cutting edge research on novel methods to improve PEEK applications in dentistry, including oral implant, prosthodontics and orthodontics, is reviewed in this article. In addition, this article also discusses innovative surface modifications of PEEK, which are a focus area of active investigations. Furthermore, this article also discusses the necessary future studies and clinical trials for the use of PEEK in the human oral environment to investigate its feasibility and long-term performance.
In recent years, many natural foods and herbs rich in phytochemicals have been proposed as health supplements for patients with metabolic syndrome (MetS). Theaflavins (TFs) are a polyphenol hydroxyl ...substance with the structure of diphenol ketone, and they have the potential to prevent and treat a wide range of MetS. However, the stability and bioavailability of TFs are poor. TFs have the marvelous ability to alleviate MetS through antiobesity and lipid-lowering (AMPK-FoxO3A-MnSOD, PPAR, AMPK, PI3K/Akt), hypoglycemic (IRS-1/Akt/GLUT4, Ca2+/CaMKK2-AMPK, SGLT1), and uric-acid-lowering (XO, GLUT9, OAT) effects, and the modulation of the gut microbiota (increasing beneficial gut microbiota such as Akkermansia and Prevotella). This paper summarizes and updates the bioavailability of TFs, and the available signaling pathways and molecular evidence on the functionalities of TFs against metabolic abnormalities in vitro and in vivo, representing a promising opportunity to prevent MetS in the future with the utilization of TFs.

The translucent zirconia surface was treated with 50 μm abrasive alumina particles at different pressure: 0.1 MPa; 0.2 MPa; 0.3 MPa; 0.4 MPa; 0.5 MPa; untreated specimens were used as control group (

= 33). For each group, three-point bending test was used to evaluate the flexural strength, and surface characterizations were analyzed. Following adhesive bonding and water storage for 24 h, specimens were subdivided into groups baseline and aged (5000 thermocycles). Then, shear bond strength was measured and failure mode was recorded. Statistical analysis was performed with one-way ANOVA and Tukey test (
α
= 0.05).
Results
Increasing air-abrasion pressure (0.3 MPa, 0.4 MPa, and 0.5 MPa) decreased the flexural strength. Higher air-abrasion pressure resulted in rougher zirconia surfaces and caused more microcracks. The highest shear bond strength was obtained for zirconia surfaces abraded at 0.2 MPa (15.88 ± 2.70 MPa) and 0.3 MPa (14.32 ± 1.12 MPa). Aging did not decrease the strength for all groups except control group (
p
< 0.001).
Conclusions
Air-abrasion with 50 μm abrasive alumina particles at 0.2 MPa could achieve good strength for translucent zirconia ceramics while maintaining adequate and durable bonding with resin cement.
Clinical relevance
A total of 0.2 MPa is recommended for air-abrasion procedure applied before a dental restoration fabricated with translucent zirconia is bonded to resin cement.
Sex differences in health status and life expectancy are widely accepted to exist. The mechanisms underlying it are still poorly understood. In this study, we aimed to clarify the influences and ...contributions of sex on the gut microbiome in healthy centenarians and to explore the different roles played by the gut microbiome in healthy aging between the sexes.
Taking covariates of different dimensions into account (social demographics, anthropometry, the activities of daily living, dietary structure, mental state, blood tests, lifestyle and disease history), our data showed that sex was one of the most significant covariates affecting the gut microbiome of healthy centenarians at both the species and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes Orthology (KO) levels. The beta diversity between the sexes were significantly different (Adonis test: p = 0.011, R
= 0.031), and the male centenarians had a greater alpha diversity than the females (Simpson and Shannon test: P<0.05). At the species level, we identified 31 species enriched in males and 7 species enriched in females. The composition and function patterns of the microbiome varied between the sexes. Further functional analysis showed that males' gut microbiome exhibited greater resistance to oxidative stress compared to females. In contrast to men, the species associated with healthy aging dominated among healthy female centenarians, while the species associated with unhealthy aging were relatively rare.
The present study reveals that the gut microbiome structure and resistance to oxidative stress in healthy centenarians differ between the sexes and provides new insights into the possible sex-specific role of the gut microbiome in healthy aging.
Abstract Objectives Fracture and secondary caries are the primary reasons for dental restoration failure. The objective of this study was to develop a self-healing composite to heal cracks, while ...containing dimethylaminohexadecyl methacrylate (DMAHDM) for antibacterial function and nanoparticles of amorphous calcium phosphate (NACP) for remineralization. Methods Microcapsules were synthesized with poly(urea-formaldehyde) (PUF) shells containing triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) and N,N -dihydroxyethyl- p -toluidine (DHEPT) as healing liquid. Composite contained 20 mass% of NACP and 35% glass fillers. In addition, composite contained 0%, 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, or 10% of microcapsules. A single edge V-notched beam method measured fracture toughness ( KIC ) and self-healing efficiency. A dental plaque microcosm biofilm model was used to test the antibacterial properties. Results Incorporation of microcapsules up to 7.5% into the composite did not adversely affect the mechanical properties ( p > 0.1). Successful self-healing was achieved, with KIC recovery of 65–81% (mean ± sd; n = 6) to regain the load-bearing capability after composite fracture. The self-healing DMAHDM-NACP composite displayed a strong antibacterial potency, inhibiting biofilm viability and lactic acid production, and reducing colony-forming units by 3–4 orders of magnitude, compared to control composite without DMAHDM. Conclusions A dental composite was developed with triple benefits of self-healing after fracture, antibacterial activity, and remineralization capability for the first time. Clinical significance The self-healing, antibacterial and remineralizing composite may be promising for tooth cavity restorations to combat bulk fracture and secondary caries. The method of using triple agents (self-healing microcapsules, DMAHDM, and NACP) may have wide applicability to other dental composites, adhesives, sealants and cements.
Periodontitis is a common infectious disease characterized by loss of tooth-supporting structures, which eventually leads to tooth loss. The heavy burden of periodontal disease and its negative ...consequence on the patient's quality of life indicate a strong need for developing effective therapies. According to the World Health Organization, 10⁻15% of the global population suffers from severe periodontitis. Advances in understanding the etiology, epidemiology and microbiology of periodontal pocket flora have called for antibacterial therapeutic strategies for periodontitis treatment. Currently, antimicrobial strategies combining with polymer science have attracted tremendous interest in the last decade. This review focuses on the state of the art of antibacterial polymer application against periodontal pathogens and biofilms. The first part focuses on the different polymeric materials serving as antibacterial agents, drug carriers and periodontal barrier membranes to inhibit periodontal pathogens. The second part reviews cutting-edge research on the synthesis and evaluation of a new generation of bioactive dental polymers for Class-V restorations with therapeutic effects. They possess antibacterial, acid-reduction, protein-repellent, and remineralization capabilities. In addition, the antibacterial photodynamic therapy with polymeric materials against periodontal pathogens and biofilms is also briefly described in the third part. These novel bioactive and therapeutic polymeric materials and treatment methods have great potential to inhibit periodontitis and protect tooth structures.

Lactobacillus oris isolated from fecal samples of Hainan centenarians showed significantly in vivo lipid lowering ability compared with the controls, and the ability was comparable with mixed probiotics strains in mice The possible mechanisms of lipid-lowering of probiotics and Lactobacillus oris may be associated with HMGR inhibition to suppress the synthesis of endogenous cholesterol; bile acids reabsorption, and intestinal FXR-FGF15 signaling pathways promoting the cholesterol conversion into bile acids secretion.
The addition of oat at varying percentages (26%, 32%, 38%, 44% and 50%) was used to evaluate the structural, microstructural, and physicochemical changes in instant-extruded rice (IER). A mixture of ...broken rice and oat flour was extruded in a twin-screw extruder. It was found that when adding 44% oats, the gelatinization degree of the mixed powder was the lowest (89.086 ± 1.966%). The dietary fiber content increased correspondingly with the increase in oat addition. Analyses of texture properties revealed that the hardness, adhesive, and resilience values increased and then decreased with oat addition. Compared with other common instant rice (IR), the advantages of IER were evaluated in terms of microstructure, digestive performance, and flavor. IER with 44% oat addition obtained in this study had higher hardness, adhesiveness, rehydration time, and sensory score, and the content of resistant starch (RS) reached 6.06%. The electronic nose and electronic tongue analyses could distinguish the flavor of different IR efficiently. This study showed the feasibility of preparing fiber-enriched IER. The results demonstrated the potential for the development and utilization of broken rice, providing a reference for the development of IER.
The gut microbial dysbiosis is a risk of colorectal cancer (CRC) and some bacteria have been reported as potential markers for CRC diagnosis. However, heterogeneity among studies with different ...populations and technologies lead to inconsistent results. Here, we investigated six metagenomic profiles of stool samples from healthy controls (HC), colorectal adenoma (CA) and CRC, and six and four genera were consistently altered between CRC and HC or CA across populations, respectively. In FengQ cohort, which composed with 61 HC, 47 CA, and 46 CRC samples, a random forest (RF) model composed of the six genera, denoted as signature-HC, distinguished CRC from HC with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.84. Similarly, another RF model composed of the four universal genera, denoted as signature-CA, discriminated CRC from CA with an AUC of 0.73. These signatures were further validated in five metagenomic sequencing cohorts and six independent 16S rRNA gene sequencing cohorts. Interestingly, three genera overlapped in the two models (
Porphyromonas
,
Parvimonas
and
Peptostreptococcus
) were with very low abundance in HC and CA, but sharply increased in CRC. A concise RF model on the three genera distinguished CRC from HC or CA with AUC of 0.87 and 0.67, respectively. Functional gene family analysis revealed that Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes Orthogroups categories which were significantly correlated with markers in signature-HC and signature-CA were mapped into pathways related to lipopolysaccharide and sulfur metabolism, which might be vital risk factors of CRC development. Conclusively, our study identified universal bacterial markers across populations and technologies as potential aids in non-invasive diagnosis of CRC.
