The outbreak of the coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) has caused enormous stress among the public in China. Intellectual input from various aspects is needed to fight against COVID-19, including ...understanding of the public's emotion and behaviour and their antecedents from the psychological perspectives. Drawing upon the cognitive appraisal theory, this study examined three cognitive appraisals (i.e., perceived severity, perceived controllability, and knowledge of COVID-19) and their associations with a wide range of emotional and behavioural outcomes among the Chinese public.
Participants were 4607 citizens (age range: 17-90 years, Mage = 23.71 years) from 31 provinces in China and they took part in a cross-sectional survey online.
The results showed that the public's emotional and behavioural reactions were slightly affected by the outbreak of COVID-19. Moreover, the public had limited participation in the events regarding COVID-19 but actively engaged in precautionary behaviour. In addition, results of structural equation model with latent variables revealed that the three appraisals were differentially related to the outcome variables (i.e., negative emotion, positive emotion, sleep problems, aggression, substance use, mobile phone use, social participation, and precautionary behaviour).
The findings highlight the utility of cognitive appraisal, as a core process of coping stress, in explaining the public's emotion and behaviour in the encounter of public health concern. Practically, the findings facilitate the government and practitioners to design and deliver targeted intervention programs to the public.
Reported is a highly enantioselective copper‐catalyzed Markovnikov protoboration of unactivated terminal alkenes. A variety of simple and abundant feedstock α‐olefins bearing a diverse array of ...functional groups and heterocyclic substituents can be used as substrates, and the reaction proceeds under mild reaction conditions at ambient temperature to provide expedient access to enantioenriched alkylboronic esters in good regioselectivity and with excellent enantiocontrol. Critical to the success of the protocol was the development and application of a novel, sterically hindered N‐heterocyclic carbene, (R,R,R,R)‐ANIPE, as the ligand for copper.
By design: A highly enantioselective copper‐catalyzed Markovnikov protoboration of α‐olefins is described. This mild and general process effectively converts simple and abundant feedstock α‐olefins into a diverse array of chiral alkylboronic esters with excellent enantiocontrol. Key to the success of the protocol was the use of a newly developed, sterically hindered N‐heterocyclic carbene, (R,R,R,R)‐ANIPE, as the ligand.

A general, efficient, highly enantio‐ and chemoselective N‐heterocyclic carbene (NHC)/Ni‐catalyzed addition of readily available and stable arylboronic esters to ketones is reported. This protocol ...provides unexpectedly fast access (usually 10 min) to various chiral tertiary alcohols with exceptionally broad substrate scope and excellent functional group tolerance (76 examples, up to 98 % ee). This process is orthogonal to other known Ni‐mediated Suzuki–Miyaura couplings, as it tolerates aryl chlorides, fluorides, ethers, esters, amides, nitriles, and alkyl chlorides. The reaction is applied to late‐stage modifications of various densely functionalized medicinally relevant molecules. Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest that a rare enantioselective η2‐coordinating activation of ketone carbonyls is involved. This cross‐coupling‐like mechanism is expected to enable other challenging transformations of ketones.
A method for general asymmetric addition of arylborons to simple ketones is reported, which is enabled by nickel/N‐heterocyclic carbene catalysis. Chiral tertiary alcohols are furnished with high efficiency and excellent levels of enantio‐ and chemocontrol, and the method offers a broad substrate scope.
Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated epithelial cancers, including nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and approximately 10% of gastric cancers, termed EBVaGC, represent 80% of all EBV-related ...malignancies. However, the exact role of EBV in epithelial cancers remains elusive. Here, we report that EBV functions in vasculogenic mimicry (VM). Epithelial cancer cells infected with EBV develop tumor vascular networks that correlate with tumor growth, which is different from endothelial-derived angiogenic vessels and is VEGF-independent. Mechanistically, activation of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR/HIF-1α signaling cascade, which is partly mediated by LMP2A, is responsible for EBV-induced VM formation. Both xenografts and clinical samples of NPC and EBVaGC exhibit VM histologically, which are correlated with AKT and HIF-1α activation. Furthermore, although anti-VEGF monotherapy shows limited effects, potent synergistic antitumor activities are achieved by combination therapy with VEGF and HIF-1α-targeted agents. Our findings suggest that EBV creates plasticity in epithelial cells to express endothelial phenotype and provides a novel EBV-targeted antitumor strategy.
The common cytokine receptor γ chain, γc, is a component of the receptors for interleukin-2 (IL-2), IL-4, IL-7, IL-9, IL-15, and IL-21. Mutation of the gene encoding γc results in X-linked severe ...combined immunodeficiency in humans, and γc family cytokines collectively regulate development, proliferation, survival, and differentiation of immune cells. Here, we review the basic biology of these cytokines, highlighting mechanisms of signaling and gene regulation that have provided insights for immunodeficiency, autoimmunity, allergic diseases, and cancer. Moreover, we discuss how studies of this family stimulated the development of JAK3 inhibitors and present an overview of current strategies targeting these pathways in the clinic, including novel antibodies, antagonists, and partial agonists. The diverse roles of these cytokines on a range of immune cells have important therapeutic implications.

Huashi Baidu formula (HSBDF) was developed to treat the patients with severe COVID-19 in China. The purpose of this study was to explore its active compounds and demonstrate its mechanisms against ...severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) through network pharmacology and molecular docking.
All the components of HSBDF were retrieved from the pharmacology database of TCM system. The genes corresponding to the targets were retrieved using UniProt and GeneCards database. The herb-compound-target network was constructed by Cytoscape. The target protein-protein interaction network was built using STRING database. The core targets of HSBDF were analyzed by Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG). The main active compounds of HSBDF were docked with SARS-CoV-2 and angiotensin converting enzyme II (ACE2).
Compound-target network mainly contained 178 compounds and 272 corresponding targets. Key targets contained MAPK3, MAPK8, TP53, CASP3, IL6, TNF, MAPK1, CCL2, PTGS2, etc. There were 522 GO items in GO enrichment analysis (p < .05) and 168 signaling pathways (p < .05) in KEGG, mainly including TNF signaling pathway, PI3K-Akt signaling pathway, NOD-like receptor signaling pathway, MAPK signaling pathway, and HIF-1 signaling pathway. The results of molecular docking showed that baicalein and quercetin were the top two compounds of HSBDF, which had high affinity with ACE2.
Baicalein and quercetin in HSBDF may regulate multiple signaling pathways through ACE2, which might play a therapeutic role on COVID-19.
