When a spatially uniform temperature change is imposed on a solid with more than one phase, or on a polycrystal of a single, non-cubic phase (showing anisotropic expansion-contraction), the resulting ...thermal strain is inhomogeneous (non-affine). Thermal cycling induces internal stresses, leading to structural and property changes that are usually deleterious. Glasses are the solids that form on cooling a liquid if crystallization is avoided--they might be considered the ultimate, uniform solids, without the microstructural features and defects associated with polycrystals. Here we explore the effects of cryogenic thermal cycling on glasses, specifically metallic glasses. We show that, contrary to the null effect expected from uniformity, thermal cycling induces rejuvenation, reaching less relaxed states of higher energy. We interpret these findings in the context that the dynamics in liquids become heterogeneous on cooling towards the glass transition, and that there may be consequent heterogeneities in the resulting glasses. For example, the vibrational dynamics of glassy silica at long wavelengths are those of an elastic continuum, but at wavelengths less than approximately three nanometres the vibrational dynamics are similar to those of a polycrystal with anisotropic grains. Thermal cycling of metallic glasses is easily applied, and gives improvements in compressive plasticity. The fact that such effects can be achieved is attributed to intrinsic non-uniformity of the glass structure, giving a non-uniform coefficient of thermal expansion. While metallic glasses may be particularly suitable for thermal cycling, the non-affine nature of strains in glasses in general deserves further study, whether they are induced by applied stresses or by temperature change.
Upon cooling, glass-forming liquids experience a dynamic decoupling in the fast β and slow α process, which has greatly influenced glass physics. By exploring an extremely wide temporal and ...temperature range, we find a surprising gradual change of the relaxation profile from a single-step to a two-step decay upon cooling in various metallic glasses. This behavior implies a decoupling of the relaxation in two different processes in a glass state: a faster one likely related to the anomalous stress-dominated microscopic dynamics, and a slower one associated with subdiffusive motion at larger scales with a broader distribution of relaxation times.
The nanofibrous nature and its intricate structural organization are the basis for the extraordinary ability of sound enamel to outlive masticatory forces at minimal failure rates. Apatite nanofibers ...of several hundreds of micrometers to possibly millimeters in length originate during the secretory stage of amelogenesis as 2-nm-thin and 15-nm-wide ribbons that develop and grow in length under the guidance of a dynamic mixture of specialized proteins, the developing enamel matrix (DEM). A critical role in the unidirectional and oriented growth of enamel mineral ribbons has been attributed to amelogenin, the major constituent of the DEM. This review elaborates on recent studies on the ability of ribbon-like assemblies of amelogenin to template the formation of an amorphous calcium phosphate precursor that transforms into apatite mineral ribbons similar to the ones observed in developing enamel. A mechanistic model of the biological processes that drive biomineralization in enamel is presented in the context of a comparative analysis of enamel mouse models and earlier structural data of the DEM emphasizing a regulatory role of the matrix metalloproteinase 20 in mineral deposition and the involvement of a process-directing agent for the templated mineral growth directed by amelogenin nanoribbons.
Background
The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of epidemiologic and physician‐diagnosed pollen‐induced AR (PiAR) in the grasslands of northern China and to study the impact of the ...intensity and time of pollen exposure on PiAR prevalence.
Methods
A multistage, clustered and proportionately stratified random sampling with a field interviewer‐administered survey study was performed together with skin prick tests (SPT) and measurements of the daily pollen count.
Results
A total of 6043 subjects completed the study, with a proportion of 32.4% epidemiologic AR and 18.5% PiAR. The prevalence was higher in males than females (19.6% vs 17.4%, P = .024), but no difference between the two major residential and ethnic groups (Han and Mongolian) was observed. Subjects from urban areas showed higher prevalence of PiAR than rural areas (23.1% vs 14.0%, P < .001). Most PiAR patients were sensitized to two or more pollens (79.4%) with artemisia, chenopodium, and humulus scandens being the most common pollen types, which were similarly found as the top three sensitizing pollen allergens by SPT. There were significant regional differences in the prevalence of epidemiologic AR (from 18.6% to 52.9%) and PiAR (from 10.5% to 31.4%) among the six areas investigated. PiAR symptoms were positively associated with pollen counts, temperature, and precipitation (P < .05), but negatively with wind speed and pressure P < .05).
Conclusion
Pollen‐induced AR (PiAR) prevalence in the investigated region is extremely high due to high seasonal pollen exposure, which was influenced by local environmental and climate conditions.
Nearly 500 basidiomycetous yeast species were accepted in the latest edition of The Yeasts: A Taxonomic Study published in 2011. However, this number presents only the tip of the iceberg of yeast ...species diversity in nature. Possibly more than 99 % of yeast species, as is true for many groups of fungi, are yet unknown and await discovery. Over the past two decades nearly 200 unidentified isolates were obtained during a series of environmental surveys of yeasts in phyllosphere and soils, mainly from China. Among these isolates, 107 new species were identified based on the phylogenetic analyses of nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA) D1/D2 domains of the large subunit (LSU), the small subunit (SSU), and the internal transcribed spacer region including the 5.8S rDNA (ITS) and protein-coding genes both subunits of DNA polymerase II (RPB1 and RPB2), the translation elongation factor 1-α (TEF1) and the mitochondrial gene cytochrome b (CYTB), and physiological comparisons. Forty-six of these belong to 16 genera in the Tremellomycetes (Agaricomycotina). The other 61 are distributed in 26 genera in the Pucciniomycotina. Here we circumscribe eight new genera, three new families and two new orders based on the multi-locus phylogenetic analyses combined with the clustering optimisation analysis and the predicted similarity thresholds for yeasts and filamentous fungal delimitation at genus and higher ranks. Additionally, as a result of these analyses, three new combinations are proposed and 66 taxa are validated.
Background
We report a rare case of secondary acute angle closure attack because of lupus choroidopathy and accompanying polyserositis, as an initial presentation of a novel type of systemic lupus ...erythematosus in a 44-year-old woman.
Case presentation
The patient complained of eyelid oedema and chemosis with bilateral severe loss of visual acuity. Systemic lupus erythematosus was diagnosed based on malar rash, polyserositis, proteinuria and positive antibody titers for antinuclear antibodies, anti-DNA, antinucleosome antibodies and ribosomal RNP. Subsequently, secondary bilateral acute angle closure caused by choroidal effusions with lupus choroidopathy was diagnosed. A month after steroid and immunosuppressive drug therapy, the patient’s intraocular pressure and visual acuity returned to normal. During the subsequent year, the secondary acute angle closure did not recur and polyserositis remained under control.
Conclusions
Bilateral, secondary acute angle closure attack due to SLE choroidopathy can be an initial presentation of SLE, which is often accompanied by polyserositis. Prompt and aggressive high doses of steroids and immunosuppressive therapy are strongly recommended.
For glasses, the structural origin of their flow phenomena, such as elastic and plastic deformations especially the microscopic hidden flow before yield and glass-to-liquid transition (GLT), is ...unclear yet due to the lack of structural information. Here we investigate the evolution of the microscopic localized flow during GLT in a prototypical metallic glass combining with dynamical mechanical relaxations, temperature-dependent tensile experiments and stress relaxation spectra. We show that the unstable and high mobility nano-scale liquid-like regions acting as flow units persist in the glass and can be activated by either temperature or external stress. The activation of such flow units is initially reversible and correlated with β-relaxation. As the proportion of the flow units reaches a critical percolation value, a mechanical brittle-to-ductile transition or macroscopic GLT happens. A comprehensive picture on the hidden flow as well as its correlation with deformation maps and relaxation spectrum is proposed.
The air-sea exchanges of CO2 in the world's 165 estuaries and 87 continental shelves are evaluated. Generally and in all seasons, upper estuaries with salinities of less than two are strong sources ...of CO2 (39 ± 56 mol C m-2 yr-1 , positive flux indicates that the water is losing CO2 to the atmosphere); mid-estuaries with salinities of between 2 and 25 are moderate sources (17.5 ± 34 mol C m-2 yr-1 ) and lower estuaries with salinities of more than 25 are weak sources (8.4 ± 14 mol C m-2 yr-1 ). With respect to latitude, estuaries between 23.5 and 50° N have the largest flux per unit area (63 ± 101 mmol C m-2 d-1 ); these are followed by lower-latitude estuaries (23.5-0° S: 44 ± 29 mmol C m-2 d-1 ; 0-23.5° N: 39 ± 55 mmol C m-2 d-1 ), and then regions north of 50° N (36 ± 91 mmol C m-2 d-1 ). Estuaries south of 50° S have the smallest flux per unit area (9.5 ± 12 mmol C m-2 d-1 ). Mixing with low-pCO2 shelf waters, water temperature, residence time and the complexity of the biogeochemistry are major factors that govern the pCO2 in estuaries, but wind speed, seldom discussed, is critical to controlling the air-water exchanges of CO2 . The total annual release of CO2 from the world's estuaries is now estimated to be 0.10 Pg C yr-1 , which is much lower than published values mainly because of the contribution of a considerable amount of heretofore unpublished or new data from Asia and the Arctic. The Asian data, although indicating high pCO2 , are low in sea-to-air fluxes because of low wind speeds. Previously determined flux values rely heavily on data from Europe and North America, where pCO2 is lower but wind speeds are much higher, such that the CO2 fluxes are higher than in Asia. Newly emerged CO2 flux data in the Arctic reveal that estuaries there mostly absorb rather than release CO2 . Most continental shelves, and especially those at high latitude, are undersaturated in terms of CO2 and absorb CO2 from the atmosphere in all seasons. Shelves between 0 and 23.5° S are on average a weak source and have a small flux per unit area of CO2 to the atmosphere. Water temperature, the spreading of river plumes, upwelling, and biological production seem to be the main factors in determining pCO2 in the shelves. Wind speed, again, is critical because at high latitudes, the winds tend to be strong. Since the surface water pCO2 values are low, the air-to-sea fluxes are high in regions above 50° N and below 50° S. At low latitudes, the winds tend to be weak, so the sea-to-air CO2 flux is small. Overall, the world's continental shelves absorb 0.4 Pg C yr-1 from the atmosphere.
The Tremellomycetes (Basidiomycota) contains a large number of unicellular and dimorphic fungi with stable free-living unicellular states in their life cycles. These fungi have been conventionally ...classified as basidiomycetous yeasts based on physiological and biochemical characteristics. Many currently recognised genera of these yeasts are mainly defined based on phenotypical characters and are highly polyphyletic. Here we reconstructed the phylogeny of the majority of described anamorphic and teleomorphic tremellomycetous yeasts using Bayesian inference, maximum likelihood, and neighbour-joining analyses based on the sequences of seven genes, including three rRNA genes, namely the small subunit of the ribosomal DNA (rDNA), D1/D2 domains of the large subunit rDNA, and the internal transcribed spacer regions (ITS 1 and 2) of rDNA including 5.8S rDNA; and four protein-coding genes, namely the two subunits of the RNA polymerase II (RPB1 and RPB2), the translation elongation factor 1-α (TEF1) and the mitochondrial gene cytochrome b (CYTB). With the consideration of morphological, physiological and chemotaxonomic characters and the congruence of phylogenies inferred from analyses using different algorithms based on different data sets consisting of the combined seven genes, the three rRNA genes, and the individual protein-coding genes, five major lineages corresponding to the orders Cystofilobasidiales, Filobasidiales, Holtermanniales, Tremellales, and Trichosporonales were resolved. A total of 45 strongly supported monophyletic clades with multiple species and 23 single species clades were recognised. This phylogenetic framework will be the basis for the proposal of an updated taxonomic system of tremellomycetous yeasts that will be compatible with the current taxonomic system of filamentous basidiomycetes accommodating the ‘one fungus, one name’ principle.
With sufficient high cooling rates, a variety of liquids, including metallic melts, will cross a glass transition temperature and solidify into glass accompanying a marked increase of the shear ...viscosity in approximately 17 orders of magnitude. Because of the intricate atomic structure and dynamic behaviours of liquid, it is yet difficult to capture the underlying structural mechanism responsible for the marked slowing down during glass transition, which impedes deep understanding of the formation and nature of glasses. Here, we report that a universal structural indicator, the average degree of five-fold local symmetry, can well describe the slowdown dynamics during glass transition. A straightforward relationship between structural parameter and viscosity (or α-relaxation time) is introduced to connect the dynamic arrest and the underlying structural evolution. This finding would be helpful in understanding the long-standing challenges of glass transition mechanism in the structural perspective.
