Hernioplasty stands as one of the most common abdominal surgical interventions. The “gold standard” treatment for inguinal hernias remains Lichtenstein mesh hernioplasty. Nonetheless, clinical ...practice continues to grapple with issues concerning complications such as recurrence, chronic postoperative pain, and infection. The myriad types of surgery lead to conflicting opinions regarding the superiority and drawbacks of inguinal canal plastic surgery methods. This article presents current data on the surgical treatment of non-mesh inguinal hernias, delineating the most prevalent techniques while exploring their respective advantages and disadvantages. Additionally, the researchers' experiences are analyzed in detail.

Hydrogen-desorbing behavior of the hydrides in 15 rare earth elements (Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb and Lu) was examined by temperature swing column chromatography from room ...temperature to 1273
K. As a result, it was found that hydrogen-desorbing profiles of the rare earth hydrides except Eu had two peaks. The first peaks were located on low-temperature zone of about 600–700
K, the second peaks were located on high-temperature zone of about 700–900
K, and the peaks were separated. The cause of separation was the bonding type between hydrogen and metals, not from hetero-reaction of dehydrogenation. The bonding between hydrogen and metals seemed to be two types.
In addition, the first peaks had two types, sharp one and broad one. The first peaks of Y and heavy rare earth Tb–Lu showed sharp one and those of light rare earth La, Ce, Pr, Nd showed broad one. Sm, Eu and Gd showed complex hydrogen-desorbing behavior. Molar ratio of the first bonding hydrogen atom dissociated at low-temperature zone to the second bonding hydrogen atom dissociated at high-temperature zone was approximately 1–2.
This study investigated the prognostic significance of thymidine phosphorylase (TP) and p53 expression in 96 surgically resected primary esophageal squamous cell carcinomas. Expression was assessed ...using immunohistochemical staining methods. Prognostic values were determined by multivariate analysis using Cox's proportional hazards model. Although TP expression was not correlated with p53 expression, it was associated with genetic alteration of the latter. In univariate analysis, TP expression emerged as a significant prognostic factor but p53 expression did not. However, in multivariate analysis, despite TP not being a significant independent predictor of survival, co-expression of TP together with p53 did represent a statistically significant prognostic factor.

AIM To efficiently replicate the biology and pathogenesis of human esophageal adenocarcinoma(EAC) using the modified Levrat model of end-to-side esophagojejunostomy. METHODS End-to-side ...esophagojejunostomy was performed on rats to induce gastroduodenoesophageal reflux to develop EAC. Animals were randomly selected and serially euthanized at 10(n = 6),17(n = 8),24(n = 9),31(n = 6),38(n = 6),and 40(n = 6) wk postoperatively. The esophagi were harvested for downstream histopathology and gene expression. Histological evaluation wascompleted to determine respective rates of carcinogenic development. Quantitative reverse transcriptionpolymerase chain reaction was performed to determine gene expression levels of MUC2,CK19,and CK20,and results were compared to determine significant differences throughout disease progression stages.RESULTS The overall study mortality was 15%. Causes of mortality included anastomotic leak, gastrointestinal hemorrhage, stomach ulcer perforation, respiratory infection secondary to aspiration, and obstruction due to tumor or late anastomotic stricture. 10 wk following surgery,100% of animals presented with esophagitis. Barrett’s esophagus(BE) was first observed at 10 wk,and was present in 100% of animals by 17 wk. Dysplasia was confirmed in 87.5% of animals at 17 wk,and increased to 100% by 31 wk. EAC was first observed in 44.4% of animals at 24 wk and increased to 100% by 40 wk. In addition, two animals at 38-40 wk post-surgery had confirmed macro-metastases in the lung/liver and small intestine, respectively. MUC2 gene expression was progressively down-regulated from BE to dysplasia to EAC. Both CK19 and CK20 gene expression significantly increased in a stepwise manner from esophagitis to EAC. CONCLUSION Esophagojejunostomy was successfully replicated in rats with low mortality and a high tumor burden, which may facilitate broader adoption to study EAC development, progression, and therapeutics.

Based on Kakuno and Liu's perturbation theory, the formula for wave forces acting on an array of vertical cylinders is derived. The perturbation approach is based on the small amplitude and simple ...harmonic wave theory. Furthermore, the distance between two adjacent cylinders is assumed to be smaller than the wave length of incident waves so that flow separations and energy dissipation are confined with the neighborhood of cylinders. The wave forces are calculated from the pressure differences in front and behind the array. Laboratory experiments are performed by using square cylinders. Theoretical results agree with the experimental data very well over a range of water depths.
