Previously we have reported that the rate of cerebral vascular disorders as well as the cases of severe hypertension in old ages are significantly less in Hachijo island than in the whole country. We ...have also examined the serum eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), EPA/AA ratio and platelet aggregation in the groups eating fish well and seldom (the group eating fish well represents those eating fish at every meal), and found that the group eating fish well had high concentration of EPA, high EPA/AA ratio and diminished platelet aggregation. In this paper we attempted quantitative examination of apolipoproteins of the habitants in Hachijo island. Blood samples, obtained from 45 subjects, 25 male and 21 female subjects, were analyzed. Apolipoproteins (Apo A-I, Apo A-II, Apo C-II and Apo E) were estimated by the method of Single Radical Immunodiffusion (SRID). Apo C-II in male was significantly higher than that in female. Apo A-I and apo A-II in the group of obesity were higher than those in nonobesity. There was no significant difference in the composition of apolipoproteins between the group of smoking and non-smoking, while apo A-I and apo A-II in the group of drinking were significantly higher than those in the non-drinking group. A-I/A-II ratio in the group eating fish well was higher than that in the no fish group. Significant correlation were found among the values of serum total cholesterol, triglyceride and apo E, apo C-II.
Apo-lipoproteins constitute an important factor in arteriosclerosis. Dyerberg et al. demonstrated that Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) acts as an antiarteriosclerotic substance. However, the relationship ...between the amount of apo-lipoproteins and the content of fatty acids in serum remains unclear. Considering these circumstances, we attempted the analysis of serum fatty acids and the estimation of some apo-lipoproteins (Apo A-I, Apo A-II, Apo C-II and Apo E). Blood samples were drawn from 45 subjects of healthy male and female. Fatty acids were analyzed by Gas chromatography and amounts of apolipoproteins were estimated by the method of SRID. No correlation was observed between fatty acids and either Apo A-I or Apo A-II. But there was a positive tendency between A-I/A-II ratio and the contents of EPA and DHA. A positive correlation was observed between Apo C-II and saturated fatty acids as well as monounsaturated fatty acids, but no correlation between Apo C-II and polyunsaturated fatty acids except for DHA. A positive correlation was also observed between Apo E and saturated fatty acids, but no correlation between Apo E and unsaturated fatty acids except for DHA.
The serial pathologic studies of placenta examined in Nepal of high mountain country since 1977 were compared with those of Japanese placentas. As the most characteristic findings of Nepalese ...placentas, massive subchorionic fibrin deposits were observed. In this paper, in order to find a cause of such a high incidence of intraplacental coagulation, coagulation and fibrinolytic states of 160 Nepalese pregnant women from 20 to 40 weeks of gestation were investigated and compared with those of Japanese pregnant women. Results: 1) Levels of fibrinolytic inhibitors of α1-AT, α2-MG, α2-PI and C1-INA in Nepalese group were higher than those of Japanese group, while AT-III levels were lower than those of Japanese women group. 2) No significant differences of PTT as well as concentrations of fibrinogen, plasminogen and FDP were found in both groups, but FVIII value showed significantly high in Nepalese group. 3) Prekallikrein and kallikrein levels in Nepalese group were much higher than those of Japanese group. 4) Protein C levels in Nepalese pregnant women were less than those of Japanese group, while levels of PIVKA-II over 1μg/ml in Nepalese group amounted to 45%. In conclusion, in general, Nepalese pregnant women at high land have a tendency of hypercoagulable state which might lead to intraplacental hypercoagulation.
Danazol, a derivative of 17α-ethinyl testosterone which is a synthetic steroid with antigonadotropic properties has been used in the treatment of endometriosis. The efficacy of Danazol due to ...long-term administration resulted in a reduction of menstrual blood loss. The purpose of this investigation was to study not only the influence of Danazol on clotting and fibrinolytic activities for patients with endometriosis, but also to know that Danazol therapy may decrease menstrual blood loss in patients with hereditary hemorrhagic disease as reported by Soma et al. Results: 1) There were steady rises in F VIII and F IX after 4 months administration of Danazol, while no rises of such factors were observed in women given androgen. 2) No significant increase of platelets and other clotting factors was observed during Danazol treatment, even though a transient decrease of fibrinogen was seen. 3) No significant changes of fibrinolytic activities such as α1-AT, α2-MG, AT-III and C1-INA were observed. 4) Plasma levels of kallikrein inhibitor at the onset of menstruation in women treated with Danazol was higher than the control group. 5) However, in vitro changes of clotting as well as fibrinolytic activities depending upon concentrations of Danazol were not evident. In conclusion, Danazol therapy on coagulation and fibrinolytic factors was different from the effect of Pill treatment. Therefore, it will be applicable to clinical use of the treatment of hemorrhagic disorders.
