Natural gas hydrate is ice‐like mixture of gas (mostly methane) and water that is widely found in sediments along the world's continental margins and within and beneath permafrost and glaciers in a ...near‐surface depth interval where the pressure is sufficiently high and temperature sufficiently low for gas hydrate to be stable. We categorize the myriad of geological gas hydrate deposits into five characteristic types. We then review the multiple quantitative models that have proposed to describe the genesis of these deposits and describe how each may have formed. We emphasize the importance of coupling multiphase flow (free gas and liquid water) and multicomponent reactive transport with geological history to describe the dynamical processes of gas hydrate formation and evolution in geological systems. A better insight into the kinetics of methane formation from microbial biogenesis and the processes of multiphase flow at the pore scale will advance our knowledge of how these systems form. By understanding the generation and evolution of gas hydrate through time, we will better decipher the role of gas hydrate in the carbon cycle, its potential to contribute to climate change and geohazards, and how to design optimal strategies for gas production from hydrate reservoirs.

Scientific drillings and geophysical investigations have revealed various occurrences of gas hydrate under the seafloor and within and beneath permafrost. We summarize their key features and categorize their occurrences into five major types. We then review the different quantitative models that have been developed to explain their formation in the field and link different models to field observations. We identify the key advances achieved, the major remaining challenges, and the efforts required to further understand the formation of gas hydrate in geological systems. This knowledge can help us learn the role of gas hydrate in natural environments.

One of the important rotational resonances in nonaxisymmetric neoclassical transport has been experimentally validated in the KSTAR tokamak by applying highly nonresonant n=1 magnetic perturbations ...to rapidly rotating plasmas. These so-called bounce-harmonic resonances are expected to occur in the presence of magnetic braking perturbations when the toroidal rotation is fast enough to resonate with periodic parallel motions of trapped particles. The microRNA miR-125b is multi-faceted, with the ability to function as a tumor suppressor or an oncogene, depending on the cellular context. To date, the pro-apoptotic role of miR-125b and its ...underlying mechanisms are unexplored. In this study, both gain- and loss-of-function experiments revealed that miR-125b expression not only induced spontaneous apoptosis in various cell lines derived from the liver, lung and colorectal cancers, but also sensitized cancer cells to diverse apoptotic stimuli, including nutrient starvation and chemotherapeutic treatment. Furthermore, downregulation of miR-125b was a frequent event in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) tissues, and the miR-125b level was positively associated with the rate of apoptosis in HCC tissues. Subsequent investigations identified Mcl-1, Bcl-w and interleukin (IL)-6R as direct targets of miR-125b. Restoration of miR-125b expression not only diminished the expression of Mcl-1 and Bcl-w directly but also indirectly reduced the Mcl-1 and Bcl-xL levels by attenuating IL-6/signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 signaling. Consistent with these findings, introduction of miR-125b reduced the mitochondrial membrane potential and promoted the cleavage of pro-caspase-3. These data indicate that miR-125b may promote apoptosis by suppressing the anti-apoptotic molecules of the Bcl-2 family and miR-125b downregulation may facilitate tumor development by conferring upon cells the capability to survive under conditions of nutrient deprivation and chemotherapeutic treatment. Our findings highlight the importance of miR-125b in the regulation of apoptosis and suggest miR-125b as an attractive target for anti-cancer therapy.
Deoxyxylulose 5-phosphate synthase (DXS) and deoxyxylulose 5-phosphate reductoisomerase (DXR) are the enzymes that catalyze the first two enzyme steps of the methylerythritol 4-phosphate (MEP) ...pathway to supply the isoprene building-blocks of carotenoids. Plant DXR and DXS enzymes have been reported to function differently depending on the plant species. In this study, the differential roles of rice DXS and DXR genes in carotenoid metabolism were investigated.
The accumulation of carotenoids in rice seeds co-expressing OsDXS2 and stPAC was largely enhanced by 3.4-fold relative to the stPAC seeds and 315.3-fold relative to non-transgenic (NT) seeds, while the overexpression of each OsDXS2 or OsDXR caused no positive effect on the accumulation of either carotenoids or chlorophylls in leaves and seeds, suggesting that OsDXS2 functions as a rate-limiting enzyme supplying IPP/DMAPPs to seed carotenoid metabolism, but OsDXR doesn't in either leaves or seeds. The expressions of OsDXS1, OsPSY1, OsPSY2, and OsBCH2 genes were upregulated regardless of the reductions of chlorophylls and carotenoids in leaves; however, there was no significant change in the expression of most carotenogenic genes, even though there was a 315.3-fold increase in the amount of carotenoid in rice seeds. These non-proportional expression patterns in leaves and seeds suggest that those metabolic changes of carotenoids were associated with overexpression of the OsDXS2, OsDXR and stPAC transgenes, and the capacities of the intermediate biosynthetic enzymes might be much more important for those metabolic alterations than the transcript levels of intermediate biosynthetic genes are. Taken together, we propose a 'Three Faucets and Cisterns Model' about the relationship among the rate-limiting enzymes OsDXSs, OsPSYs, and OsBCHs as a "Faucet", the biosynthetic capacity of intermediate metabolites as a "Cistern", and the carotenoid accumulations as the content of "Cistern".
Our study suggests that OsDXS2 plays an important role as a rate-limiting enzyme supplying IPP/DMAPPs to the seed-carotenoid accumulation, and rice seed carotenoid metabolism could be largely enhanced without any significant transcriptional alteration of carotenogenic genes. Finally, the "Three Faucets and Cisterns model" presents the extenuating circumstance to elucidate rice seed carotenoid metabolism.
Mincle (macrophage-inducible C-type lectin, Clec4e) is a transmembrane pattern recognition receptor involving the innate immunity, but its role in kidney disease is still unexplored. In the ...obstructed kidney of the unilateral ureteral obstruction model of renal injury, Mincle was specifically detected in the infiltrating M1 macrophages (CD68+iNOS+ cells) on day one but was rapidly reduced following reduction of M1 macrophages during the progression of kidney injury. Interestingly, Mincle-expressing macrophages were progressively increased in the cisplatin-induced acute kidney injury model, where iNOS expression was detected in the CD68+ cells following Mincle induction. Adaptive transfer of Mincle+ M1 macrophages largely promoted cisplatin-induced renal inflammation, which was prevented by the knockdown of Mincle in the transferred cells. Mincle was tightly regulated by TLR4/NF-κB signaling as evidenced by the binding of NF-κB/p65 to the promoter region of Mincle in LPS-primed macrophages. Blocking TLR4 or NF-κB suppressed LPS-induced Mincle expression on macrophages. Importantly, Mincle was found to be essential for maintaining the inflammatory phenotypes of M1 macrophages through the Syk signaling pathway since knockdown of Mincle or inhibition of Syk suppressed LPS-induced IL-1β, MCP-1, and iNOS expression. Thus, Mincle is induced specifically on M1 macrophages, where Mincle-Syk signaling promotes and maintains inflammatory phenotypes of M1 macrophages in acute renal inflammation. Hence, targeting Mincle may be a novel therapy for acute kidney injury associated with M1 macrophages.

Frequency dependencies of the microwave characteristics (MW) were investigated using a co-axial method. The non-linear behavior of the MW with the composition transformation may be due to different degrees of Fe ion oxidation on the spinel/hexaferrite grain boundaries and strong exchange coupling during the hard and soft phases.

Success of cricothyroidotomy depends on accurate identification of anatomical neck landmarks. Anaesthetists palpated the cricothyroid membrane of 28 obese and 28 non‐obese women in labour ...(cut‐off BMI 30 kg.m−2) and marked the entry point for device insertion with an ultraviolet invisible pen. Ultrasonography was used to mark the midpoint of the cricothyroid membrane and the distance between the two marks was measured. The median (IQR range) distance between the two marks was significantly greater in the obese than the non‐obese patients (5 (2–9.5 0–34) mm vs 1.8 (0.1–6 0–15) mm, respectively; p = 0.02). The cricothyroid membrane was accurately identified with digital palpation in only 39% (11/28) of obese compared with 71% (20/28) of non‐obese patients (p = 0.03). Increased neck circumference in obese patients was significantly associated with inaccuracy in locating the cricothyroid membrane. Percutaneous identification of the cricothyroid membrane in obese women in labour was poor. Pre‐procedural ultrasound may help improved the identification of neck landmarks for cricothyroidotomy.
Aim
Foreshortened mesentery or thick abdominal wall constitutes a rationale for laparoscopic intracorporeal ileocolic anastomoses (ICA). The aim of this study was to compare intracorporeal to ...extracorporeal ICA in terms of surgical site infections in patients with Crohn’s ileitis and overweight patients with right colon tumors.
Method
This was a prospective propensity score-matched cohort study enrolling consecutive patients with Crohn’s terminal ileitis and overweight patients with right colon tumors undergoing elective laparoscopic right colon resection with intracorporeal or extracorporeal ICA. Propensity score matching with a 1:1 ratio was employed to compare diagnosis-matched patients for age, BMI, ASA, and previous abdominal surgery.
Results
Overall, 453 patients were enrolled: 233 intracorporeal vs. 220 extracorporeal. Propensity score matching left 195 intracorporeal and 195 extracorporeal patients comparable for age (

The conversion of the electromagnetic energy into heat depends largely on the dielectric properties of the material being treated. Therefore, the fundamental understanding of these properties is necessary for designing industrial microwave processing unit. The objective of this study is to investigate the dielectric properties of oil palm biomass and biochar at varying frequency in the range 0.2–10GHz. The dielectric properties were measured using a coaxial probe attached to a network analyzer. The results indicate the dielectric constant was found to be inversely proportional to the frequency. However, the biomass in the present study did not obey the famous Debye equation and hence, the loss factor was found to be directly proportional to the frequency. The dielectric properties of oil palm shell (OPS) and its biochar were found to be almost similar and higher than oil palm fiber (OPF). Relaxation time and static dielectric constant were also presented in the paper. Lastly, the heating characteristics under MW irradiation confirmed poor microwave absorbing properties of oil palm biomass.
Brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) provide a framework for studying how cortical population dynamics evolve over learning in a task in which the mapping between neural activity and behavior is precisely ...defined. Learning to control a BMI is associated with the emergence of coordinated neural dynamics in populations of neurons whose activity serves as direct input to the BMI decoder (direct subpopulation). While previous work shows differential modification of firing rate modulation in this population relative to a population whose activity was not directly input to the BMI decoder (indirect subpopulation), little is known about how learning-related changes in cortical population dynamics within these groups compare.To investigate this, we monitored both direct and indirect subpopulations as two macaque monkeys learned to control a BMI. We found that while the combined population increased coordinated neural dynamics, this increase in coordination was primarily driven by changes in the direct subpopulation. These findings suggest that motor cortex refines cortical dynamics by increasing neural variance throughout the entire population during learning, with a more pronounced coordination of firing activity in subpopulations that are causally linked to behavior.
