The article explores the heterogeneity and complexity of contemporary refugee movements in Europe by analysing in particular the situation along the Balkan corridor, investigating the complex ...intersections of gender, age, ethnic affiliation, and other aspects reflecting the situation of individuals on the move. It focuses on construction of the vulnerability of individuals and social groups. Unlike restrictive policies, which reduce mobility, we perceive migrations as autonomous processes. Through an analysis of secondary data, reports and research, the article challenges
the policies of selecting migrants based on their legal status, using restrictive borders and transferring the external borders of the Schengen area into the internal territories of the member states – in our case, along the Balkan corridor.
The text studies how digitality and refugee routes intersect by focussing on the concepts of »connected migrants« and the digital footprints of refugee routes in transnational spaces. The smartphone ...is a key signifier of today’s refugee, and possession of one is questioned by government policies of legitimisation and public opinion perceptions of what constitutes a »genuine refugee«. These overlook the complex question of digital rights and migration’s embeddedness in the fluidity of the postmodern world. The text thus deals with the digital world’s ambivalence, which is not just a one-way relation of empowerment but entails the risk of complete control over a refugee’s body as well. We establish that an important shift has occurred in European policies, one most visible in the process of erasing the electronic traces of refugees on the move and the illegal return of refugees to the previous country on their way, the so-called »pushbacks«.

The article is based on the paradigm of human rights as the basis for formulating policies against global trafficking in human beings. As a rule, the responses of national policies and ...intergovernmental organizations involve a migration management strategy based on restrictive border regimes, quotas, and other mechanisms to limit the inflow of migrants and regularize their stay. Instead of the preferred regulatory approach, aimed at protecting the national state, this paper advances human rights protection for the victims of organized criminal activities. "Modern slavery" requires greater sensitization of global policies and commitment to the protection and rights of vulnerable individuals. The paper calls for individualized and gender-specific treatment of human trafficking victims, in particular sex industry victims. Adapted from the source document.
The smartphone has become one of the main tenets of contemporary spatial as well as digital migration routes that are increasingly determined by technologies, platforms and networks. Such routes have ...become increasingly dangerous and uncertain, which testifies of structural criminalisation and control of people on the move, but also raises important questions about autonomy and agency of individuals as a response to restrictive migration and border policies. The monograph explores such transformations by focussing on the movement of refugees across the borders of nation-states through a rethinking of the notion of vulnerability (especially of women and children), the examination of perceptions of refugees and migrants by the public and a reflection of the notions of climate change and climate refugees that all challenge the main classificatory mechanisms constructing more or less “legitimate” groups of migrants. In this vein, the authors argue for more solidarity throughout the movement of individuals through the “gates” and “violent borders” of contemporary nation-states.
Global migrations are a key feature of modern societies, the changes they cause in postmodern societies are extensive, and they relate to the entire spectrum of social organisation: from the issues ...of incorporating migrants into their new society, including policies of recognizing multiculturalism and citizen rights, to the challenges of achieving social cohesion in the microcosm of everyday life and preventing the construction of parallel, ghettoised worlds of migrants and the majority population. Contemporary migration trends have led to changes in identity policies and disparate responses - including populist ones - to the issues of coexistence with '"foreigners" - with people of different identities. Ethnic/cultural differences are factors of exclusion, where we focus on the essential question of constructing a different awe', of a kind that will include migrants as new members of our society in the "wefield. Based on empirical data, the paper analyses ""good neighbour" strategies, i.e. social distance in the Slovene and European environments. PUBLICATION ABSTRACT
