The Intermediate Silicon Layers (ISL) detector is currently being built as part of the CDF II detector upgrade project. The ISL detector will significantly improve tracking in the central region and, ...together with the Silicon Vertex detector, provide stand-alone 3D track information in the forward/backward regions. In this article, we present the quality of the production sensors manufactured by Hamamatsu Photonics, which account for roughly half of the silicon sensors used in the ISL detector.

The Gamma ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST) is an astro-particle mission that will study the mostly unexplored, high energy (

MeV

) spectrum of photons coming from active sources in ...the universe. Construction of the GLAST silicon tracker, by far the largest ever built for a space mission, is now well on the way, as it is scheduled for launch by NASA in autumn 2006. We report on the basic technology adopted for the silicon detectors, particularly in connection to their use in space, on the first results of sensors testing and on the status of tracker assembly.
An application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) wafer test system has been developed to provide comprehensive production screening of the ATLAS Semiconductor Tracker front-end chip (ABCD3T). The ...ABCD3T features a 128-channel analog front-end, a digital pipeline, and communication circuitry, clocked at 40 MHz, which is the bunch crossing frequency at the Large Hadron Collider. The tester measures values and tolerance ranges of all critical IC parameters, including dc parameters, electronic noise, time resolution, clock levels, and clock timing. The tester is controlled by a field-programmable gate array (ORCA3T) programmed to issue the input commands to the IC and to interpret the output data. This allows the high-speed wafer-level IC testing necessary to meet the production schedule. To characterize signal amplitudes and phase margins, the tester utilizes pin-driver, delay, and digital-to-analog converter chips, which control the amplitudes and delays of signals sent to the IC under test. Output signals from the IC under test go through window comparator chips to measure their levels. A probe card has been designed specifically to reduce pickup noise that can affect the measurements. The system can operate at frequencies up to 100 MHz to study the speed limits of the digital circuitry before and after radiation damage. Testing requirements and design solutions are presented.

The
Intermediate Silicon Layers detector (ISL) is a large radius silicon tracker, installed in the CDF detector for the RUN II of the Tevatron Collider. With almost 4
m
2 of double-sided silicon ...sensors and 300,000 electronic channels it represents the biggest system of this kind ever built. The construction and installation phases, the performed quality assurance tests as well as the problems encountered are reviewed.
RUN II of the Tevatron officially started on March 1st, 2001. Although the CDF silicon system is still being commissioned, results on the performance of the ISL detector obtained using the first data are presented.

The CLUE experiment has started operation with four of the nine telescopes that are foreseen for its beginning. These telescopes are at present at Roque de Los Muchachos in the Canary Islands, in the ...same site as the HEGRA experiment. In winter 1997 we started taking data with the telescopes pointing directly at the moon. A description of the telescopes and the performance of the detector are given.

We describe a trigger architecture developed for shower selection in the CLUE Cherenkov telescopes. The selection is made first in each telescope of the array looking at the low resolution images ...produced by fast electronics, than requiring temporal coincidence between units. Big effort has been put to simplify the programming of trigger configurations to help the user to switch easily between different observational and calibration requests.
