Most of traditional Chinese medicine substances come from herbal plants. The medicinal quality of herbal plants varies with the locations of cultivation, the parts of the herb collected, the season ...of the herb collected, and the herb processing method. Polysaccharides are major components of the herb plants and their biosynthesis is partly controlled by the genes but mostly influenced by the availability of the nutrition and determined by the various environmental factors. In recent decades, polysaccharides isolated from different kinds of Chinese herbs have received much attention due to their important biological activities, such as anti-tumor, anti-oxidant, anti-diabetic, radiation protecting, antiviral, hypolipidemic, and immunomodulatory activities. Interestingly, different batches of the same herb can obtain different polysaccharide fractions with subtle differences in molecular weight, monosaccharide compositions, glycosidic linkages, and biological functions. Even with these variations, a large number of bioactive polysaccharides from different kinds of traditional Chinese herbs have been purified, characterized, and reported. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the latest polysaccharide extraction methods and the strategies used for monosaccharide compositional analysis plus polysaccharide structural characterization. Most importantly, the reported chemical characteristics and biological activities of the polysaccharides from the famous traditional Chinese herbs including Astragalus membranaceus, Ginseng, Lycium barbarum, Angelica sinensis, Cordyceps sinensis, and Ophiopogon japonicus will be reviewed and discussed. The published studies provide evidence that polysaccharides from traditional Chinese herbs play an important role in their medical applications, which forms the basis for future research, development, and application of these polysaccharides as functional foods and therapeutics in modern medicine.
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a common emotional cognitive disorder that seriously affects people's physical and mental health and their quality of life. Due to its clinical and etiological ...heterogeneity, the molecular mechanisms underpinning MDD are complex and they are not fully understood. In addition, the effects of traditional drug therapy are not ideal. However, postmortem and animal studies have shown that overactivated microglia can inhibit neurogenesis in the hippocampus and induce depressive-like behaviors. Nonetheless, the molecular mechanisms by which microglia regulate nerve regeneration and determine depressive-like behaviors remain unclear. As the immune cells of the central nervous system (CNS), microglia could influence neurogenesis through the M1 and M2 subtypes, and these may promote depressive-like behaviors. Microglia may be divided into four main states or phenotypes. Under stress, microglial cells are induced into the M1 type, releasing inflammatory factors and causing neuroinflammatory responses. After the inflammation fades away, microglia shift into the alternative activated M2 phenotypes that play a role in neuroprotection. These activated M2 subtypes consist of M2a, M2b and M2c and their functions are different in the CNS. In this article, we mainly introduce the relationship between microglia and MDD. Importantly, this article elucidates a plausible mechanism by which microglia regulate inflammation and neurogenesis in ameliorating MDD. This could provide a reliable basis for the treatment of MDD in the future.
Neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs) are a group of diseases caused by chronic and progressive degeneration of neural tissue. The main pathological manifestations are neuronal degeneration and loss in ...the brain and/or spinal cord. Common NDDs include Alzheimer disease (AD), Parkinson disease (PD), Huntington disease (HD), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The complicated pathological characteristics and different clinical manifestations of NDDs result in a lack of sensitive and efficient diagnostic methods. In addition, no sensitive biomarkers are available to monitor the course of NDDs, predict their prognosis, and monitor the therapeutic response. Despite extensive research in recent years, analysis of amyloid β (Aβ) and α-synuclein has failed to effectively improve NDD diagnosis. Although recent studies have indicated circulating miRNAs as promising diagnostic biomarkers of NDDs, the miRNA in the peripheral circulation is susceptible to interference by other components, making circulating miRNA results less consistent. Exosomes are small membrane vesicles with a diameter of approximately 30-100 nm that transport proteins, lipids, mRNA, and miRNA. Because recent studies have shown that exosomes have a double-membrane structure that can resist ribonuclease in the blood, giving exosomal miRNA high stability and making them resistant to degradation, they may become an ideal biomarker of circulating fluids. In this review, we discuss the applicability of circulating exosomal miRNAs as biomarkers, highlight the technical aspects of exosomal miRNA analysis, and review studies that have used circulating exosomal miRNAs as candidate diagnostic biomarkers of NDDs.
As a typical representative of tourism resources, the spatial distribution of A-level scenic spots has a profound impact on the layout of tourism industry. Scenic spot accessibility is also important ...for the development of tourism. However, the relationship of regional accessibility and spatial distribution of A-level scenic spots are understudied. The study used quantitative geography and geographic information system spatial analysis methods and analyzed the evolution of spatial distribution and regional accessibility of A-level scenic spots in Guangdong Province from 2001 to 2020. The results present the following: 1. Agglomeration distribution is the main distribution type of A-level scenic spots in Guangdong Province, and the spatial distribution is unbalanced. 2. From 2001 to 2020, the spatial distribution of A-level scenic spots in 21 prefecture-level cities of Guangdong Province has gradually developed from "wide gap" to "relatively reasonable." 3. Distribution density of A-level scenic spots in Guangdong Province has evolved into the main core area of high density. 4. Center of the gravity of A-level scenic spots in Guangdong Province developed from east to west during 2002-2007 and moved to the east after 2007. 5. Accessibility between A-level scenic spots and tourist source areas in Guangdong Province is good, with an evident aggregation phenomenon. This study reveals the spatial distribution evolution law and regional accessibility of A-level scenic spots, which is conducive to healthy, sustainable, and stable development of tourism in Guangdong Province.
The anti-inflammatory effects of phytochemicals, bioactive components from plants having health benefits, have been heavily investigated in the last several decades. However, the gap between the high ...dosage demands (μM) of phytochemicals in vitro studies and the low bioavailability (nM) of most phytochemicals after consuming relevant foods/supplements in humans undermines the application of these phytochemicals in the prevention of chronic inflammation and its related chronic diseases in humans. One of the approaches to bridging this gap is to combine two or more phytochemicals/foods to synergistically prevent chronic inflammation. While increasing combinations of phytochemicals on anti-inflammation studies have been reported, there is no report dedicating why combining two or more phytochemicals synergistically attenuates chronic inflammation. In the present review, we summarized different types of combinations exerting synergistic anti-inflammatory effects such as the combination of phytochemicals from the same foods, and the combination of phytochemicals from different foods/plants. Particularly, we proposed five mechanisms including enhancing the bioavailability of phytochemicals, increasing antioxidant capacity, interacting with gut microbiome and targeting same and different signaling pathways, to understand how the combination of phytochemicals exerts synergistic anti-inflammatory effects in cells, animals, and humans. This review provides clues to boost more studies to combine several phytochemicals/foods to reduce chronic inflammation and prevent chronic diseases in humans.
Lentinula edodes has been used to improve general health for thousands of years in Asia. It is the second largest cultivated and the most popular edible mushroom in the world known as "Xianggu" in ...China and "Shiitake" in Japan. Lentinan is a polysaccharide extracted from Lentinula edodes. β-Glucan is the major bioactive component in lentinan with immunostimulatory effect. The antitumor property of lentinan was reported in 1960s. Biochemical studies indicate that immunocytes can be activated by lentinan through multiple signaling pathways, such as TLR4/Dectin1-MAPK and Syk-PKC-NFκB pathways. Though it has been approved as an adjuvant therapeutic drug both in China and Japan for treating cancers since 1980s, a systematic review of clinical studies of lentinan has not been conducted elaborately. In this review, over 9474 reported lentinan-associated cancer treatment cases are evaluated and summarized from 135 independent studies in China during the past 12 years (2004-2016) based on CNKI (China National Knowledge Infrastructure), VIP (Chongqing VIP Chinese Scientific Journals Database) and Wanfang database. The 9474 reported lentinan-associated cancer treatment cases include lung cancer (3469 cases), gastric cancer (3039 cases), colorectal cancer (1646 cases), ovarian cancer (183 cases), cervical cancer (130 cases), Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (70 cases), pancreatic cancer (15 cases), cardiac cancer (15 cases), nasopharyngeal cancer (14 cases), duodenal cancer (1 case) and 110 cancer cases with no classifying patient information. Overall clinical data show solid effect of lentinan on improving the quality of life and on promoting the efficacy of chemotherapy and radiation therapy during cancer treatment.
Bulk nanobubbles (BNBs) are submicron gaseous domains dispersed in solutions, which are supposed to survive for several hours or even days. In recent years, there has been a rapid growth in the ...research and extraordinary applications of BNBs. Conventional theories based on gas diffusion and Laplace pressure, however, predicted that nanoscale gas bubbles in water should dissolve within microseconds, presenting a modern-day paradox in current nanobubbles researches. Also, it is still challenging to efficiently produce BNBs and determine their gaseous nature with the available techniques. In this review, we start from a general introduction and brief history of nanobubbles researches and revisit the current progress on the generation methods and detection techniques. Two possible formation mechanisms are suggested, and the plausibility of the proposed theories on BNBs stability is discussed with some suggestions for future studies on bulk nanobubbles.
Prediction of urban ecological risk, which is increasing with the rapid development of China's economy, has become more complex and difficult, resulting in great damage to the safety of people's ...lives and property and the quality of the ecological environment. Elucidation of the change mechanism of the urban ecological resilience level from the perspective of the resilience characteristics and exploration of the spatiotemporal differences of the urban ability are necessary to prevent and resolve ecological risks. To this end, here, a model for the evaluation of urban ecological resilience was constructed by considering three aspects: resistance, adaptability, and resilience. The spatiotemporal change pattern of urban ecological resilience in Guangzhou from 2000 to 2020 was evaluated. Furthermore, a spatial autocorrelation model was used to explore the management model of Guangzhou's ecological resilience in 2020. Finally, based on the FLUS model, the spatial pattern of urban land use under the 2035 benchmark and innovation- and entrepreneurship-oriented scenarios was simulated and the spatial distribution of the ecological resilience level under different urban development scenarios was evaluated. We found that from 2000 to 2020, areas with a low ecological resilience expanded to the northeast and southeast, whereas areas with a high ecological resilience significantly decreased; from 2000 to 2010, original high-level regions in the northeast and east of Guangzhou were transformed into medium level regions. Further, in 2020, the southwestern region of the city will show a low level of resilience and high density of pollutant discharge enterprises, indicating that the ability to prevent and resolve environmental and ecological risks in this region is relatively low. Additionally, the overall ecological resilience of Guangzhou under the innovation- and entrepreneurship-oriented "City of Innovation" urban development scenario is higher than that under the benchmark scenario in 2035. The results of this study provide a theoretical basis for the development of resilient urban ecological environment.
