The injected fluids in secondary processes supplement the natural energy present in the reservoir to displace oil. The recovery efficiency mainly depends on the mechanism of pressure maintenance. ...However, the injected fluids in tertiary or enhanced oil recovery (EOR) processes interact with the reservoir rock/oil system. Thus, EOR techniques are receiving substantial attention worldwide as the available oil resources are declining. However, some challenges, such as low sweep efficiency, high costs and potential formation damage, still hinder the further application of these EOR technologies. Current studies on nanoparticles are seen as potential solutions to most of the challenges associated with these traditional EOR techniques. This paper provides an overview of the latest studies about the use of nanoparticles to enhance oil recovery and paves the way for researchers who are interested in the integration of these progresses. The first part of this paper addresses studies about the major EOR mechanisms of nanoparticles used in the forms of nanofluids, nanoemulsions and nanocatalysts, including disjoining pressure, viscosity increase of injection fluids, preventing asphaltene precipitation, wettability alteration and interfacial tension reduction. This part is followed by a review of the most important research regarding various novel nano-assisted EOR methods where nanoparticles are used to target various existing thermal, chemical and gas methods. Finally, this review identifies the challenges and opportunities for future study regarding application of nanoparticles in EOR processes.
Hydrogels are polymeric three-dimensional network structures with high water content. Due to their superior biocompatibility and low toxicity, hydrogels play a significant role in the biomedical ...fields. Hydrogels are categorized by the composition from natural polymers to synthetic polymers. To meet the complicated situation in the biomedical applications, suitable host-guest supramolecular interactions are rationally selected. This review will have an introduction of hydrogel classification based on the formulation molecules, and then a discussion over the rational design of the intelligent hydrogel to the environmental stimuli such as temperature, irradiation, pH, and targeted biomolecules. Further, the applications of rationally designed smart hydrogels in the biomedical field will be presented, such as tissue repair, drug delivery, and cancer therapy. Finally, the perspectives and the challenges of smart hydrogels will be outlined.
Abstract Attention is often viewed as a mental spotlight, which can be scaled like a zoom lens at specific spatial locations and features a center-surround gradient. Here, we demonstrate a neural ...signature of attention spotlight in signal transmission along the visual hierarchy. fMRI background connectivity analysis was performed between retinotopic V1 and downstream areas to characterize the spatial distribution of inter-areal interaction under two attentional states. We found that, compared to diffused attention, focal attention sharpened the spatial gradient in the strength of the background connectivity. Dynamic causal modeling analysis further revealed the effect of attention in both the feedback and feedforward connectivity between V1 and extrastriate cortex. In a context which induced a strong effect of crowding, the effect of attention in the background connectivity profile diminished. Our findings reveal a context-dependent attention prioritization in information transmission via modulating the recurrent processing across the early stages in human visual cortex.

This work investigated the effect of the chelation of Fe3+ with a fluoroquinolone (FQ) antibiotic ciprofloxacin (CIP) on the catalytic behavior of Fe3+/Fe2+ and the degradation and mineralization of CIP in electro-Fenton (EF) process using activated carbon fiber (ACF) felt cathode. First of all, effect of initial Fe2+ and Fe3+ concentrations on the degradation and mineralization of CIP in EF process was compared, while the optimal initial Fe2+ and Fe3+ contents were both verified to be 1.50mmoldm−3, in which 73% and 72% of initial TOC were eliminated after 360min electrolysis, respectively. Secondly, Fe3+-CIP chelate was produced during CIP degradation in EF process, whose predominant form was confirmed as 1:2 metal-ligand stoichiometry. The formation of Fe3+-CIP chelate had no obvious inhibition on the degradation and mineralization of CIP due to the efficient Fe3+ reduction on the ACF cathode with excellent catalytic feature. About 17% and 35% of initial 1.50mmoldm−3 Fe3+ were reduced to Fe2+ at 18mAcm−2 in ultrapure water and 200mgdm−3 CIP solutions during 30min pre-aeration of EF process, respectively, while higher Fe2+ concentration was maintained for initial 1.50mmoldm−3 Fe3+ during CIP degradation. Finally, the evolution of F−, NH4+ and NO3− ions released to the acidic medium were determined, as well as the formation of short-chain carboxylic acid (oxalic, oxamic and formic acids). Eight aromatic intermediates were identified using UPLC-QTOF-MS/MS, and a feasible mineralization pathway was proposed.
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a common malignant tumor of the digestive system, and its morbidity rates are increasing worldwide. Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs), as part of the tumor ...microenvironment (TME), are not only closely linked to normal fibroblasts, but also can secrete a variety of substances (including exosomes) to participate in the regulation of the TME. Exosomes can play a key role in intercellular communication by delivering intracellular signaling substances (e.g., proteins, nucleic acids, non-coding RNAs), and an increasing number of studies have shown that non-coding RNAs of exosomal origin from CAFs are not only closely associated with the formation of the CRC microenvironment, but also increase the ability of CRC to grow in metastasis, mediate tumor immunosuppression, and are involved in the mechanism of drug resistance in CRC patients receiving. It is also involved in the mechanism of drug resistance after radiotherapy in CRC patients. In this paper, we review the current status and progress of research on CAFs-derived exosomal non-coding RNAs in CRC.
Platelets play critical roles in maintaining hemostasis. The blood brain barrier (BBB), a significant physical and metabolic barrier, helps maintain physiological stability by limiting ...transportations between the blood and neural tissues. When the brain undergoes inflammation, tumor, trauma, or bleeding, the platelet responses to help with maintaining BBB homeostasis. In the traditional point of view, activated platelets aggregate to form thrombi which cover the gaps of the blood vessels to protect BBB. However, increasing evidences indicate that platelets may harm BBB by enhancing vascular permeability. Hereby, we reviewed recently published articles with a special focus on the platelet-mediated damage of BBB. Factors released by platelets can induce BBB permeability, which involve platelet-activating factors (PAF), P-selectin, ADP, platelet-derived growth factors (PDGF) superfamily proteins, especially PDGF-AA and PDGF-CC, etc. Platelets can also secrete Amyloid-β (Aβ), which triggers neuroinflammation and downregulates the expression of tight junction molecules such as claudin-5 to damage BBB. Additionally, platelets can form aggregates with neutrophils to release reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can destroy the DNA, proteins, and lipids of endothelial cells (ECs). Moreover, platelets participate in neuroinflammation to affect BBB. Conversely, some of the platelet released factors such as PDGF-BB, protects BBB. In summary, platelets play dual roles in BBB integrity and the related mechanisms are reviewed.
Angiogenic growth factors (AGFs) are a class of secreted cytokines related to angiogenesis that mainly include vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGFs), stromal-derived factor-1 (SDF-1), ...platelet-derived growth factors (PDGFs), fibroblast growth factors (FGFs), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) and angiopoietins (ANGs). Accumulating evidence indicates that the role of AGFs is not only limited to tumor angiogenesis but also participating in tumor progression by other mechanisms that go beyond their angiogenic role. AGFs were shown to be upregulated in the glioma microenvironment characterized by extensive angiogenesis and high immunosuppression. AGFs produced by tumor and stromal cells can exert an immunomodulatory role in the glioma microenvironment by interacting with immune cells. This review aims to sum up the interactions among AGFs, immune cells and cancer cells with a particular emphasis on glioma and tries to provide new perspectives for understanding the glioma immune microenvironment and in-depth explorations for anti-glioma therapy.

Autophagy-related genes were ...translated into autophagy-related gene pairs, and univariate Cox regression was performed to obtain overall survival (OS)-related IRGPs (P<0.001). LASSO Cox regression analyses were performed to construct an autophagy-related gene pair (ARGP) model for predicting OS. The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA)-PAAD cohort was set as the training group for model construction. The model predictive value was validated in multiple external datasets. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to evaluate model performance. Tumor microenvironments and immune infiltration were compared between low- and high-risk groups with ESTIMATE and CIBERSORT. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between the groups were further analyzed by Gene Ontology biological process (GO-BP) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analyses and used to identify potential small-molecule compounds in L1000FWD.
Risk scores were calculated as follows: ATG4B|CHMP4C×(-0.31) + CHMP2B|MAP1LC3B×(0.30) + CHMP6|RIPK2 ×(-0.33) + LRSAM1|TRIM5×(-0.26) + MAP1LC3A|PAFAH1B2×(-0.15) + MAP1LC3A|TRIM21×(-0.08) + MET|MFN2×(0.38) + MET|MTDH×(0.47) + RASIP1|TRIM5×(-0.23) + RB1CC1|TPCN1×(0.22). OS was significantly shorter in the high-risk group than the low-risk group in each PAAD cohort. The ESTIMATE analysis showed no difference in stromal scores but a significant difference in immune scores (p=0.0045) and ESTIMATE scores (p=0.014) between the groups. CIBERSORT analysis showed higher naive B cell, Treg cell, CD8 T cell, and plasma cell levels in the low-risk group and higher M1 and M2 macrophage levels in the high-risk group. In addition, the results showed that naive B cells (r=-0.32, p<0.001), Treg cells (r=-0.31, p<0.001), CD8 T cells (r=-0.24, p=0.0092), and plasma cells (r=-0.2, p<0.026) were statistically correlated with the ARGP risk score. The top 3 enriched GO-BPs were signal release, regulation of transsynaptic signaling, and modulation of chemical synaptic transmission, and the top 3 enriched KEGG pathways were the insulin secretion, dopaminergic synapse, and NF-kappa B signaling pathways. Several potential small-molecule compounds targeting ARGs were also identified.
Our results demonstrate that the ARGP-based model may be a promising prognostic indicator for identifying drug targets in patients with PAAD.
