Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinomas are histologically heterogenous. Using a cohort of 184 clinically defined, resected intrahepatic cholangiocarcinomas, we retrospectively classified the histology into ...4 subtypes: large duct (LD), small duct (SD) (predominantly tubular SD1 or predominantly anastomosing/cholangiolar, SD2), or indeterminate. Then, we tested the 4 subtypes for associations with risk factors, patient outcomes, histology, and immunophenotypic characteristics. SD was the most common (84%; 24% SD1 and 60% SD2) with lower proportions of LD (8%), and indeterminate (8%). Primary sclerosing cholangitis was rare (2%), but correlated with LD (P=0.005). Chronic hepatitis, frequent alcohol use, smoking, and steatosis had no histologic association. LD was associated with mucin production (P<0.001), perineural invasion (P=0.002), CA19-9 staining (P<0.001), CK7, CK19, CD56 immunophenotype (P=0.005), and negative albumin RNA in situ hybridization (P<0.001). SD was histologically nodular (P=0.019), sclerotic (P<0.001), hepatoid (P=0.042), and infiltrative at the interface with hepatocytes (P<0.001). Albumin was positive in 71% of SD and 18% of LD (P=0.0021). Most albumin positive tumors (85%) lacked extracellular mucin (P<0.001). S100P expression did not associate with subtype (P>0.05). There was no difference in disease-specific or recurrence-free survival among the subtypes. Periductal infiltration and American Joint Committee on Cancer eighth edition pT stage predicted survival by multivariable analysis accounting for gross configuration, pT stage, and histologic type. pT2 had worse outcome relative to other pT stages. Significant differences in histology and albumin expression distinguish LD from SD, but there is insufficient evidence to support further subclassification of SD.
Monte Carlo simulations have been performed to study the effects of near-earth thunderstorms electric field on the showers with different zenith angle ranges. A vertical and uniform atmospheric ...electric field model is used in our simulations. The counting rates of ground cosmic rays at YBJ (located at YangBaJing, Tibet, China, 4300 m a. s. l.) are found to be associated with the strength and polarity of the electric field. The variations are also strongly dependent upon the shower’s zenith angle and the distance to shower core. During thunderstorms, when the distance to shower core is less than a certain value (4 m in −1000 V/cm and 40 m in +1000 V/cm), the counting rates decrease as the distance to shower core decreases, and the decreased amplitude becomes larger with the increasing zenith angle and electric field strength, especially for that in positive fields (i.e., fields accelerating positive charges downwards). As the distance to shower core increases, an increase of ground cosmic ray intensity occurs, and the enhanced amplitude becomes lager with smaller zenith angles. However, when the distance to shower core is large enough (320 m in −1000 V/cm and 540 m in +1000 V/cm), the enhanced amplitude increases with the increasing zenith angle as well as the rising strength of the electric field. A clear relationship between the intensity variations of the ground cosmic rays from showers with different zenith angle ranges and the distances to shower core in fields is given in this paper. Our simulation results are beneficial to understand the flux variations obtained by ground-based cosmic ray detectors with scaler mode and shower mode, as well as the acceleration mechanisms of secondary charged particles caused by an atmospheric electric field.
Newcastle disease (ND) is a highly contagious viral disease that constantly threatens poultry production. The velogenic (highly virulent) form of ND inflicts the most damage and can lead to 100% ...mortality in unvaccinated village chicken flocks. This study sought to characterize responses of local chickens in Ghana after challenging them with lentogenic and velogenic Newcastle disease virus (NDV) strains. At 4 wk of age, chicks were challenged with lentogenic NDV. Traits measured were pre- and post-lentogenic infection growth rates (GR), viral load at 2 and 6 d post-lentogenic infection (DPI), viral clearance rate and antibody levels at 10 DPI. Subsequently, the chickens were naturally exposed to velogenic NDV (vNDV) after anti-NDV antibody titers had waned to levels ≤1:1,700. Body weights and blood samples were again collected for analysis. Finally, chickens were euthanized and lesion scores (LS) across tissues were recorded. Post-velogenic exposure GR; antibody levels at 21 and 34 days post-velogenic exposure (DPE); LS for trachea, proventriculus, intestines, and cecal tonsils; and average LS across tissues were measured. Variance components and heritabilities were estimated for all traits using univariate animal models. Mean pre- and post-lentogenic NDV infection GRs were 6.26 g/day and 7.93 g/day, respectively, but mean post-velogenic NDV exposure GR was −1.96 g/day. Mean lesion scores ranged from 0.52 (trachea) to 1.33 (intestine), with males having significantly higher (P < 0.05) lesion scores compared to females. Heritability estimates for the lentogenic NDV trial traits ranged from moderate (0.23) to high (0.55) whereas those for the vNDV natural exposure trial were very low (≤ 0.08). Therefore, in contrast to the vNDV exposure trial, differences in the traits measured in the lentogenic challenge were more affected by genetics and thus selection for these traits may be more feasible compared to those following vNDV exposure. Our results can form the basis for identifying local chickens with improved resilience in the face of NDV infection for selective breeding to improve productivity.
Long-term survival outcomes of trimodal therapy (TMT; chemoradiation plus surgery) and bimodal therapy (BMT; chemoradiation) have seldom been analysed. In a selective-surgery paradigm, the benefit of ...TMT in patients with a complete clinical response is controversial. Factors associated with survival in patients with a clinical complete response to chemoradiation were evaluated.
Patients with stage II-III oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma treated with TMT or BMT from 2002 to 2017 were evaluated. The BMT group consisted of patients who were otherwise eligible for surgery but underwent chemoradiation alone followed by observation. This group included patients who later had salvage oesophagectomy. Survival was evaluated and compared between TMT and BMT groups. Elastic net regularization was performed to select co-variables for Cox multivariable survival analysis in patients with a clinical complete response.
Of 143 patients, 60 (41.9 per cent) underwent TMT and 83 (58.0 per cent) BMT. Patients who underwent TMT had longer median overall survival than those who had BMT (77 versus 33 months; P = 0.019). For patients with a clinical complete response, TMT achieved longer median overall survival than BMT (123 versus 55 months; P = 0.04). BMT had a high locoregional recurrence rate (48 versus 6 per cent; P < 0.001); 26 of 29 patients with locoregional recurrence in the BMT groupunderwent salvage resection. Cox multivariable analysis demonstrated that upper-mid oesophageal tumour location (hazard ratio (HR) 2.04; P = 0.024) and tumour length (HR 1.18; P = 0.046) were associated with worse survival. Although TMT was not associated with survival, it was a predictor of reduced recurrence (HR 0.28; P = 0.028). The maximum standardized uptake value after chemoradiation also predicted recurrence (HR 1.33; P < 0.001).
In patients who achieve a clinical complete response, TMT reduces locoregional recurrence but may not prolong survival. The differences in survival outcomes may be due to patient selection; therefore, a selective-surgery strategy in oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma is a reasonable approach.
Computed Tomography (CT) is a powerful method for non-destructive testing (NDT) and metrology awakes with expanding application fields. To improve the spatial resolution of high energy CT, a ...micro-spot gamma-ray source based on bremsstrahlung from a laser wakefield accelerator was developed. A high energy CT using the source was performed, which shows that the resolution of reconstruction can reach 100 μm at 10% contrast. Our proof-of-principle demonstration indicates that laser driven micro-spot gamma-ray sources provide a prospective way to increase the spatial resolution and toward to high energy micro CT. Due to the advantage in spatial resolution, laser based high energy CT represents a large potential for many NDT applications.
There are fetal sex-specific differences in the balance between angiotensin (Ang) II and Ang-(1-7) in the maternal circulation during pregnancy. To determine whether at 15 weeks' gestation plasma ...levels of Ang II and Ang-(1-7), as well as levels of prorenin and Ang-converting enzyme (ACE), predicted the development of gestational hypertension (GH) or preeclampsia (PreE) and were associated with estimates of fetal and maternal health, women who later developed GH (n=50) or PreE (n=50) were compared with body mass index-matched controls (n=100). Women who subsequently developed PreE or GH had increased Ang-(1-7) levels at 15 weeks' gestation compared with women with normal pregnancies. When separated by fetal sex, this difference was seen only in women carrying a female fetus. Prorenin and ACE concentrations were not useful biomarkers for the prediction of either PreE or GH at 15 weeks' gestation. Women with a male fetus who developed PreE and women who subsequently developed GH had increased blood pressures at 15 weeks' gestation compared with women with normal pregnancies, suggesting that these women were on an early trajectory for the development of hypertension. We propose that measurement of Ang-(1-7) during early gestation could be useful in predicting, those women who will go on to develop new-onset hypertension in pregnancy.
CuO thin film was epitaxially grown on MgO (111) substrate by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy method. Reflection high-energy electron diffraction monitoring and X-ray diffraction analysis ...indicates it is single crystal CuO (002) thin film. Without any detectable ferromagnetic dopant or second phase, the CuO thin film displays ferromagnetic characteristics at both 5K and 300K. With an in-plane mismatch and out of plane stretch, the existence of oxygen vacancies and the coexistence of Cu1+ and Cu2+ are inferred to be responsible for the origin of the room-temperature ferromagnetism in the CuO thin film.

The objective of the present study was to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation with glycitein, a major soy isoflavone, during late pregnancy (starting on d 85) and lactation on ...antioxidative indices and performance in primiparous sows. A total of 227 gilts (Yorkshire × Landrace) were used, and after parturition, piglets were cross-fostered within treatment so that each sow suckled 10 piglets. Gilts were randomly divided into 4 groups on d 85 of pregnancy and thereafter fed the basal diets of gestation or lactation (controls) or those supplemented with 15, 30, or 45 mg/kg diet glycitein. Reproductive performance of the sows, growth of litters, concentration of plasma glycitein, milk composition, and antioxidative indices in sows' plasma and milk, such as the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), and the content of malondialdehyde (MDA), were measured. Supplementation of the dam's diets with glycitein increased ADG of piglets (linear, P = 0.003) and weaned BW of litters (linear, P = 0.01) and both variables were approximately 10% greater than controls with the 45 mg/kg treatment. The percentage of milk protein was linearly (P < 0.05) increased on d 1 and 7 of lactation, and milk fat content increased on d 7 and 14 (linear, P< 0.05). All other measured indices of performance were unaffected by supplementation with glycitein (P > 0.05). The glycitein concentration in sow's plasma was linearly (P < 0.0001) elevated. During lactation, linear increases occurred in plasma activities of SOD (P < 0.001) and T-AOC (P < 0.05 to P< 0.001), CAT (d 7 to 18 of lactation, P < 0.05) and GSH-Px (d 7 of lactation, P < 0.05), whereas the content of plasma MDA decreased (linear, P < 0.05) throughout lactation with glycitein supplementation. Activities of CAT and T-AOC in milk were not affected by maternal supplementation with glycitein, but increases in SOD on d 18 of lactation (P< 0.001) and GSH-Px in colostrum (P < 0.05) were observed. The content of MDA in milk was decreased (linear, P< 0.05) at all stages of lactation except d 14. Collectively, the results of this study indicate that dietary supplementation with glycitein in sows during late pregnancy and lactation elevated the antioxidative indices, decreased the content of MDA in sow's plasma and milk, improved milk composition, and enhanced the growth performance of the sucking piglets.
