Among arthropod vectors, ticks transmit the most diverse human and animal pathogens, leading to an increasing number of new challenges worldwide. Here we sequenced and assembled high-quality genomes ...of six ixodid tick species and further resequenced 678 tick specimens to understand three key aspects of ticks: genetic diversity, population structure, and pathogen distribution. We explored the genetic basis common to ticks, including heme and hemoglobin digestion, iron metabolism, and reactive oxygen species, and unveiled for the first time that genetic structure and pathogen composition in different tick species are mainly shaped by ecological and geographic factors. We further identified species-specific determinants associated with different host ranges, life cycles, and distributions. The findings of this study are an invaluable resource for research and control of ticks and tick-borne diseases.

Since its discovery, the quantum entanglement becomes a promising resource in quantum communication and computation. However, the entanglement is fragile due to the presence of noise in quantum ...channels. Entanglement purification is a powerful tool to distill high quality entangled states from the low quality entangled states. In this review, we present an overview of entanglement purification, including the basic entanglement purification theory, the entanglement purification protocols (EPPs) with linear optics, EPPs with cross-Kerr nonlinearities, hyperentanglement EPPs, deterministic EPPs, and measurement-based EPPs. We also review experimental progress of EPPs in linear optics. Finally, we give the discussion on potential outlook for the future development of EPPs. This review may pave the way for practical implementations in future long-distance quantum communication and quantum network.
Single‐electrode triboelectric nanogenerators (SETENGs) significantly expand the application of triboelectric nanogenerators in various circumstances, such as touch‐pad technologies. In this work, a ...theoretical model of SETENGs is presented with in‐depth interpretation and analysis of their working principle. Electrostatic shield effect from the primary electrode is the main consideration in the design of such SETENGs. On the basis of this analysis, the impacts of two important structural parameters, that is, the electrode gap distance and the area size, on the output performance are theoretically investigated. An optimized electrode gap distance and an optimized area size are observed to provide a maximum transit output power. Parallel connection of multiple SETENGs with micro‐scale size and relatively larger spacing should be utilized as the scaling‐up strategy. The discussion of the basic working principle and the influence of structural parameters on the whole performance of the device can serve as an important guidance for rational design of the device structure towards the optimum output in specific applications.
A comprehensive theoretical model is developed for single‐electrode triboelectric nanogenerators. The real time output characteristics are calculated by different numerical calculation methods. A three‐capacitance equivalent circuit model is built to clarify the working principle of single‐electrode triboelectric nanogenerators. Finally, the impact of electrode gap distance and area size on the performance of the devices are investigated and strategies for the structural optimization are provided.

In this study, we collected the clinical information of LUSC patients in the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database and the relevant methylated sequences of the University of California Santa Cruz (UCSC) database to construct methylated subtypes and performed prognostic analysis.
Nine hundred sixty-five potential independent prognosis methylation sites were finally identified and the genes were identified. Based on consensus clustering analysis, seven subtypes were identified by using 965 CpG sites and corresponding survival curves were plotted. The prognostic analysis model was constructed according to the methylation sites' information of the subtype with the best prognosis. Internal and external verifications were used to evaluate the prediction model.
Models based on differences in DNA methylation levels may help to classify the molecular subtypes of LUSC patients, and provide more individualized treatment recommendations and prognostic assessments for different clinical subtypes. GNAS, FZD2, FZD10 are the core three genes that may be related to the prognosis of LUSC patients.
Entanglement purification is used to distill high quality entangled states from several noisy low quality entangled states, and it plays a key role in quantum repeater. The measurement-based ...entanglement purification protocol (MB-EPP) does not require local two-qubit gates or single-particle measurements on the noisy pairs and may offer significant advantages compared with the gate-based EPPs. We present an alternative MB-EPP in linear optics. Subsequently, we provide a detailed analysis on the realization of this MB-EPP using spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) sources. By delicately designing the optical circuits, the double-pair emission noise caused by SPDC sources can be eliminated automatically. Combined with suitable quantum memory and entanglement swapping, this MB-EPP may have application potential in the implementation of a practical measurement-based quantum repeater.
After an ischemic stroke (IS) occurs, immune cells begin traveling to the brain and immune system from the gut and gastrointestinal tract, where most of them typically reside. Because the majority of ...the body's macrophages and more than 70% of the total immune cell pool are typically found within the gut and gastrointestinal tract, inflammation and immune responses in the brain and immune organs require the mobilization of a large number of immune cells. The bidirectional communication pathway between the brain and gut is often referred to as the gut-brain axis. IS usually leads to intestinal motility disorders, dysbiosis of intestinal microbiota, and a leaky gut, which are often associated with poor prognosis in patients with IS. In recent years, several studies have suggested that intestinal inflammation and immune responses play key roles in the development of IS, and thus may become potential therapeutic targets that can drive new therapeutic strategies. However, research on gut inflammation and immune responses after stroke remains in its infancy. A better understanding of gut inflammation and immune responses after stroke may be important for developing effective therapies. This review discusses the immune-related mechanisms of the gut-brain axis after IS and compiles potential therapeutic targets to provide new ideas and strategies for the future effective treatment of IS.

Hierarchical vaterite spherulites, synthesized by a simple injection-precipitation method at room temperature, were applied for the simultaneous removal of heavy metal Cd(II) and dye Congo red (CR) from aqueous solution. Batch experiments reveal that the maximum removal capacities of as-prepared vaterite spherulites to Cd(II) and CR are 984.5 and 89.0 mg/g, respectively, showing excellent removal performance for Cd(II) and CR. Furthermore, in the binary Cd(II)-CR system, the removal capacity of vaterite to Cd(II) is significantly enhanced at lower CR concentration (<100 mg/L), but inhibited at higher CR concentration (>100 mg/L). In contrast, the concurrent Cd(II) shows negligible effect on the CR removal. The simultaneous removal mechanism was investigated by FESEM, EDX, XRD, FT-IR and XPS techniques. The simultaneous removal of Cd(II) and CR in the binary system is shown to be a multistep process, involving the preferential adsorption of dye CR, stabilization of CR to vaterite, coordination of the adsorbed CR molecules with Cd(II), and transformation of vaterite into otavite. Given the facile and green synthesis procedure, and effective removal of Cd(II) and CR in the binary system, the obtained vaterite spherulites have considerable practical interest in integrative treatment of wastewater contaminated by heavy metals and dyes.

Alterations of brain functional connectivity in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have been reported by resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging studies, but the underlying ...precise neuropathological mechanism remains unclear. This study is aimed at investigating the implicit alterations of functional connections in T2DM by integrating functional connectivity strength (FCS) and Granger causality analysis (GCA) and further exploring their associations with clinical characteristics. Sixty T2DM patients and thirty-three sex-, age-, and education-matched healthy controls (HC) were recruited. Global FCS analysis of resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging was performed to explore seed regions with significant differences between the two groups; then, GCA was applied to detect directional effective connectivity (EC) between the seeds and other brain regions. Correlations of EC with clinical variables were further explored in T2DM patients. Compared with HC, T2DM patients showed lower FCS in the bilateral fusiform gyrus, right superior frontal gyrus (SFG), and right postcentral gyrus, but higher FCS in the right supplementary motor area (SMA). Moreover, altered directional EC was found between the left fusiform gyrus and bilateral lingual gyrus and right medial frontal gyrus (MFG), as well as between the right SFG and bilateral frontal regions. In addition, triglyceride, insulin, and plasma glucose levels were correlated with the abnormal EC of the left fusiform, while disease duration and cognitive function were associated with the abnormal EC of the right SFG in T2DM patients. These results suggest that T2DM patients show aberrant brain function connectivity strength and effective connectivity which is associated with the diabetes-related metabolic characteristics, disease duration, and cognitive function, providing further insights into the complex neural basis of diabetes.
