The High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Observatory is sensitive to gamma rays and charged cosmic rays at TeV energies. The detector is still under construction, but data acquisition with the ...partially deployed detector started in 2013. An analysis of the cosmic-ray arrival direction distribution based on 4.9 x 10 super(10) events recorded between 2013 June and 2014 February shows anisotropy at the 10 super(-4) level on angular scales of about 10degrees. The HAWC cosmic-ray sky map exhibits three regions of significantly enhanced cosmic-ray flux; two of these regions were first reported by the Milagro experiment. A third region coincides with an excess recently reported by the ARGO-YBJ experiment. An angular power spectrum analysis of the sky shows that all terms up to l = 15 contribute significantly to the excesses.
The first limits on the prompt emission from the long gamma-ray burst (GRB) 130427A in the >100 GeV energy band are reported. GRB 130427A was the most powerful burst ever detected with a redshift z ≲ ...0.5 and featured the longest lasting emission above 100 MeV. The energy spectrum extends at least up to 95 GeV, clearly in the range observable by the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Gamma-Ray Observatory, a new extensive air shower detector currently under construction in central Mexico. The burst occurred under unfavorable observation conditions, low in the sky and when HAWC was running 10% of the final detector. Based on the observed light curve at MeV-GeV energies, eight different time periods have been searched for prompt and delayed emission from this GRB. In all cases, no statistically significant excess of counts has been found and upper limits have been placed. It is shown that a similar GRB close to zenith would be easily detected by the full HAWC detector, which will be completed soon. The detection rate of the full HAWC detector may be as high as one to two GRBs per year. A detection could provide important information regarding the high energy processes at work and the observation of a possible cut-off beyond the Fermi Large Area Telescope energy range could be the signature of gamma-ray absorption, either in the GRB or along the line of sight due to the extragalactic background light.
The gut microbiota-brain axis is a complex communication network essential for host health. Any long-term disruption can affect higher cognitive functions, or it may even result in several chronic ...neurological diseases. The type and diversity of nutrients an individual consumes are essential for developing the gut microbiota (GM) and the brain. Hence, dietary patterns might influence networks communication of this axis, especially at the age that both systems go through maturation processes. By implementing Mutual Information and Minimum Spanning Tree (MST); we proposed a novel combination of Machine Learning and Network Theory techniques to study the effect of animal protein and lipid intake on the connectivity of GM and brain cortex activity (BCA) networks in children from 5-to 10 years old from an indigenous community in the southwest of México. Socio-ecological conditions in this nonwestern lifestyle community are very homogeneous among its inhabitants but it shows high individual heterogeneity in the consumption of animal products. Results suggest that MST, the critical backbone of information flow, diminishes under low protein and lipid intake. So, under these nonwestern regimens, deficient animal protein and lipid consumption diets may significantly affect the GM-BCA connectivity in crucial development stages. Finally, MST offers us a metric that unifies biological systems of different nature to evaluate the change in their complexity in the face of environmental pressures or disturbances. Studying the properties of the few compact massive galaxies that exist in the local Universe (Trujillo et al. 2009) might provide a closer look to the nature of their high redshift (z ≥ 1.0) massive ...counterparts. By this means we have characterized their main kinematics, structural properties, stellar populations and star formation histories with a set of new high quality spectroscopic and imaging data (Ferré-Mateu et al. 2012 and Trujillo et al. 2012). These galaxies seem to be truly unique, as they do not follow the characteristic kinematics, stellar surface mass density profiles and stellar population patterns of present-day massive ellipticals or spirals of similar mass. They are, instead, more alike their high-z analogs. Summarizing, local compact massive galaxies are rare, unique and the perfect laboratory to study their high redshift counterparts.
We present the development of a real-time flare monitor for the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory. The flare monitor has been fully operational since 2017 January and is designed to ...detect very high energy (VHE; E 100 GeV) transient events from blazars on timescales lasting from 2 minutes to 10 hr in order to facilitate multiwavelength and multimessenger studies. These flares provide information for investigations into the mechanisms that power the blazars' relativistic jets and accelerate particles within them, and they may also serve as probes of the populations of particles and fields in intergalactic space. To date, the detection of blazar flares in the VHE range has relied primarily on pointed observations by imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. The recently completed HAWC observatory offers the opportunity to study VHE flares in survey mode, scanning two-thirds of the entire sky every day with a field of view of ∼1.8 steradians. In this work, we report on the sensitivity of the HAWC real-time flare monitor and demonstrate its capabilities via the detection of three high-confidence VHE events in the blazars Markarian 421 and Markarian 501.
The ranges of the Sierras Valle Fértil-La Huerta expose natural cross sections through a paleo-arc crust that formed in the Late Cambrian - Early Ordovician Famatinian magmatic arc, northwestern ...Argentina. Thick mafic sequences of amphibole gabbronorites to orthopyroxene-amphibole-biotite diorites form the lower levels of the exposed paleo-arc section. This mafic unit includes lens-shaped bodies of olivine-bearing cumulate rocks and tabular-shaped sill/dike intrusions of fine-grained chilled amphibole gabbro. The mafic magmas were emplaced into regional metasedimentary sequences at lower crustal levels, corresponding to pressure from 5 to 7
kbar. Gabbronorites likely representing the parental magmas that fluxed into the exposed paleo-arc crust differ from primitive magmatic arc rocks in having somewhat lower Mg-number (
ca. 0.60) and compatible (Cr and Ni) trace element contents, and slightly higher Al
2O
3 contents. This difference is taken to indicate that a pyroxene-rich olivine-bearing assemblage with a bulk high Mg/Fe ratio and low Al
2O
3 content crystallized from mantle-derived melts before mafic magmas reached the crustal levels currently exhumed. However, some gabbronorites have incompatible trace element signatures typical of primitive mafic arc magmatism. Igneous rocks to some extent more evolved than those of the mafic unit make up a tonalite-dominated intermediate unit. The intermediate unit consists of a heterogeneous suite that ranges from orthopyroxene-bearing amphibole-rich diorites to biotite-rich amphibole-poor tonalites. Within the intermediate unit, chilled mafic rocks are found as a network of dikes, whereas metasedimentary migmatites appear interlayered as m-wide septa and km-long strips. The tonalite-dominated intermediate unit passes into a granodiorite batholith through a transitional zone that is up to 2-km wide. The boundary zone separating the tonalite-dominated and granodiorite-dominated units is characterized by mingling of tonalitic and leucogranitic magmas, which together appear multiply-intruded by mafic sill/dike bodies. Within the tonalite- and granodiorite-dominated units, the less evolved mafic rocks occur as: (1) bodies tens of meters long, (2) chilled dikes and sills, and (3) microgranular inclusions (enclaves), supporting the inference that mafic magmatism was the main source for generating a vast volume of intermediate and silicic igneous rocks. Mass balance calculations and trace element systematics are combined to demonstrate that tonalites and granodiorites formed by concurrent closed-system fractional crystallization and open-system incorporation of paragneissic migmatites and/or anatectic leucogranites into the evolving igneous sequence. This study argues that the sequence of igneous rocks from Valle Fértil-La Huerta was formed as the result of complementary petrogenetic processes that operated concurrently at different levels of the Famatinian arc crust.
We test cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy formation regarding the properties of the Blue Cloud (BC), Green Valley (GV) and Red Sequence (RS), as measured on the 4000\(\small{ ...\mathring {\mathrm A}}\) break strength vs stellar mass plane at \(z=0.1\). We analyse the RefL0100N1504 run of EAGLE and the TNG100 run of IllustrisTNG project, by comparing them with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, while taking into account selection bias. Our analysis focuses on the GV, within stellar mass \(\log\,\mathrm{M_\star/M_{\odot}} \simeq 10-11\), selected from the bimodal distribution of galaxies on the D\(_n\)(4000) vs stellar mass plane, following Angthopo et al. methodology. Both simulations match the fraction of AGN in the green-valley. However, they over-produce quiescent GV galaxies with respect to observations, with IllustrisTNG yielding a higher fraction of quiescent GV galaxies than EAGLE. In both, GV galaxies have older luminosity-weighted ages with respect to the SDSS, while a better match is found for mass-weighted ages. We find EAGLE GV galaxies quench their star formation early, but undergo later episodes of star formation, matching observations. In contrast, IllustrisTNG GV galaxies have a more extended SFH, and quench more effectively at later cosmic times, producing the excess of quenched galaxies in GV compared with SDSS, based on the 4000\(\small{ \mathring {\mathrm A}}\) break strength. These results suggest the AGN feedback subgrid physics, more specifically, the threshold halo mass for black hole input and the black hole seed mass, could be the primary cause of the over-production of quiescent galaxies found with respect to the observational constraints.
Food preservation is critical for keeping the global food supply safe and available for consumers. Food scientists study production and processing to develop new technologies that improve the quality ...and quantity of healthy food products, with the main objective of increasing food production without affecting food quality and environment, while fulfilling consumer expectations. Nowadays consumers want their food to be fresh, nutritious, safe, and attractive, low priced, and ready-to-eat. That is the case of fresh-cut products; however, maintaining the quality of these products is not an easy task, since minimally processed products experience increased ethylene production and respiration rates, with the consequent lost of quality. New effective and inexpensive technologies to safely preserve the quality of fresh-cut products are needed. In the last two decades, food scientists have attempted to solve problems in fresh-cut processing and quality preservation, and rapid advances in scientific knowledge on fresh-cut product preservation have been developed. The present review describes the use of emerging technologies such as ultraviolet irradiation (UV-C), edible coatings, active packaging and natural additives, to preserve the quality of fresh-cut fruits; highlighting the areas in which information is still lacking, and commenting on future trends.
