A report on a hill near Situbondo, East Java, featured early in Soetjipto’s autobiography of the early 1930s. Anderson observes that Soetjipto called the hill “Bukit Ulama,” implying that the tombs ...at the top were of orthodox and revered Muslim teachers. But the tombs turn out to contain the remains of immigrant Madurese pioneers, perhaps also minor nobility; and the atmosphere is less Muslim than animist-magical. Includes photographs.

Almost all the six "chapters" that follow are concerned with events that occurred in Aug 1925, when Soetjipto was just ...fifteen years old. Detailed here is the rapidly deteriorating relations between the little teenager and his violent Madurese stepfather, which are marked by physical brutality and mental humiliation.
In 1992, there appeared in Djakarta an unusual book entitled Jalan Hidupku, Autobiografi Seorang Gay Priyayi Jawa Awal Abad XX (The Course of My Life, The Autobiography of a Gay Javanese Priyayi at ...the Beginning of the 20th Century), edited by the diligent peranakan folklorist Amen Budiman, and published by the Penerbitan Apresiasi Gay Jakarta. It did not last long in Soeharto's "public sphere," since it was quickly banned as immoral by the Attorney General. Here, Anderson explores the life of Soetjipto, whom people know nothing about except those things he shares in "Djalan Sampoerna," and examines the power and freshness of his works.
