Der Autor geht von der Überzeugung aus, daß die Literatur der Slowenen ebenso wie ihr kulturelles Schaffen im weitesten Sinn vom Spannungsfeld zwischen der österreichisch-deutschen und der ...romanischen Geisteswelt entscheidend geprägt wurde; nicht selten handelte es sich um Anregungen und Einflüsse aus diesem Raum. Das Interesse des Verfassers gilt nicht allein der vergleichenden, äußeren Problematik, der Kommunikation der slowenischen Literatur mit anderen europäischen Literaturen, sondern auch ihren immanenten, vorwiegend stilistischen Entwicklungstendenzen - dies ist Gegenstand der ersten, synthetisch konzipierten Darstellung. Spezieller, wenngleich eng mit dem europäischen aktuellen Literaturgeschehen verknüpft, ist der zweite Text. Das Rezeptionsmodell des Symbolismus, der zentralen Stilrichtung der europäischen Moderne am Ende des 19. und zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts, steht im Mittelpunkt der dritten Abhandlung.

Edvard Kocbek's collection of WWII short stories Strah in pogum (Fear and Courage, 1951) is analyzed & his attempt to synthesize Christian ethics & the Marxist conception of history & evolution is ...noted. The stories depart from the apologetic & ideologically & psychologically simplified war prose that was the desired type of writing about WWII events in Slovenia after 1951. Kocbek's short stories mark an end to the period of socialist realism & open a new beginning in Slovene literature in which the spiritual content & modern style are gradually accepted. Upon its publication, the book was rejected by contemporary Slovene literary critics & caused Kocbek's political & cultural banishment for ten years. Modified HA

Critically analyzed is the international symposium that took place in Budapest ...in 1983 & whose topic was European literature at the turn of the twentieth century, with special consideration of Croatian & Hungarian literature.
