The article presents a theoretically & methodologically complex & multidimensional approach to the contrastive analysis of phraseology of three neighboring languages, using as example selected ...German, Slovene & Hungarian idioms with the constituents hand & water. The comparison is based on the postulate that phraseology has a model-character, ie., we compare the conceptual basis & the phraseological meaning of the idioms with the purpose of drawing conclusions about corresponding models of conceptualization. The article presents the semantic implications of the colours black and white in Slovene and Hungarian phraseology from a cognitive aspect, the symbolic and metaphoric role of the black and white ...colour in the conceptualization of abstract domains and their language (phraseological) realization. Symbols and metaphors aren't linguistic signs, but also the components of mental processes, which are more or less universal and this fact is being reflected in the high level of convergence between the phraseological units containing colours in the observed languages. The metaphor I had opened a can of beans from Erich Segal's Love Story is studied in German, French, Hungarian, & Slovene renditions, & comparisons for equivalence adequacy between these translations ...are made. It is concluded that equivalence cannot be assessed when the metaphor is taken out of context of the larger text in which it appears in the novel, as translational adequacy needs to be evaluated on the level of parole rather than langue. Traditional translation studies fail to distinguish between comparison as a linguistic issue focusing on formal overlap between smaller langue units, eg, phonemes, morphemes, or words, & the translational issue of equivalence evaluation aimed at assessing the supraphrastic, functional adequacy, communicative effectiveness, & target-language/culture appropriateness of the rendition proposed for a source language utterance.
