The DAMA/LIBRA experiment (~ 250 kg sensitive mass composed by highly radio-pure NaI(Tl)) is in data taking in the underground Laboratory of Gran Sasso (LNGS). Its first phase (DAMA/LIBRA–phase1) and ...the former DAMA/NaI experiment (~ 100 kg of highly radio-pure NaI(Tl)) collected data for 14 independent annual cycles, exploiting the model-independent Dark Matter (DM) annual modulation signature (total exposure 1:33 ton × yr). A DM annual modulation effect has been observed at 9.3 σ C.L., supporting the presence of DM particles in the galactic halo. No systematic or side reaction able to mimic the observed DM annual modulation has been found or suggested by anyone. Recent analyses on possible diurnal effects, on the Earth shadowing effect and on possible interpretation in terms of Asymmetric Mirror DM will be mentioned. At present DAMA/LIBRA is running in its phase2 with increased sensitivity.
NETSARC (netsarc.org) is a network of 26 sarcoma reference centers with specialized multidisciplinary tumor boards (MDTB) aiming to improve the outcome of sarcoma patients. Since 2010, presentation ...to an MDTB and expert pathological review are mandatory for sarcoma patients nationwide. In the present work, the impact of surgery in a reference center on the survival of sarcoma patients investigated using this national NETSARC registry.
Patients’ characteristics and follow-up are prospectively collected and data monitored. Descriptive, uni- and multivariate analysis of prognostic factors were conducted in the entire series (N=35784) and in the subgroup of incident patient population (N=29497).
Among the 35784 patients, 155 different histological subtypes were reported. 4310 (11.6%) patients were metastatic at diagnosis. Previous cancer, previous radiotherapy, neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), and Li–Fraumeni syndrome were reported in 12.5%, 3.6%, 0.7%, and 0.1% of patients respectively. Among the 29497 incident patients, 25851 (87.6%) patients had surgical removal of the sarcoma, including 9949 (33.7%) operated in a NETSARC center. Location, grade, age, size, depth, histotypes, gender, NF1, and surgery outside a NETSARC center all correlated to overall survival (OS), local relapse free survival (LRFS), and event-free survival (EFS) in the incident patient population. NF1 history was one of the strongest adverse prognostic factors for LRFS, EFS, and OS. Presentation to an MDTB was associated with an improved LRFS and EFS, but was an adverse prognostic factor for OS if surgery was not carried out in a reference center. In multivariate analysis, surgery in a NETSARC center was positively correlated with LRFS, EFS, and OS P<0.001 for all, with a hazard ratio of 0.681 (95% CI 0.618–0.749) for OS.
This nationwide registry of sarcoma patients shows that surgical treatment in a reference center reduces the risk of relapse and death.
Background
Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT), caused by an ectopic mediastinal parathyroid adenoma, is uncommon. In the past, when the adenoma was not accessible from the neck, median sternotomy was ...advocated for safe and successful parathyroidectomy. Video‐assisted thoracoscopic surgical (VATS) parathyroidectomy represents a modern alternative approach to this problem.
Methods
Information on patients undergoing VATS was obtained from a specific database, including clinical presentation, biochemistry, preoperative imaging, surgical approach and patient outcomes. A comprehensive literature review was undertaken to draw comparisons with other publications.
Results
Over a 2‐year period, nine patients underwent VATS parathyroidectomy for sporadic PHPT. Five patients had persistent PHPT following previous unsuccessful parathyroidectomy via cervicotomy, and four had had no previous parathyroid surgery. The median duration of surgery was 90 (range 60–160) min. Eight patients were cured biochemically, with no major complications. One patient required conversion to a median sternotomy for removal of a thymoma that had resulted in false‐positive preoperative imaging.
Conclusion
With appropriate preoperative imaging, multidisciplinary input and expertise, VATS parathyroidectomy is an effective, safe and well tolerated approach to ectopic mediastinal parathyroid adenoma.
Antecedentes
El hiperparatiroidismo primario (primary hyperparathyroidism, pHPT) causado por un adenoma paratiroideo ectópico mediastínico es infrecuente. Hace años, cuando un adenoma no era accesible por vía cervical se propugnaba una esternotomía media para efectuar una paratiroidectomía segura y con éxito. La paratiroidectomía por cirugía toracoscópica asistida por video (video‐assisted thoracoscopic surgical, VATS) es una alternativa moderna para el abordaje de esta patología.
Métodos
La información de los pacientes tratados con VATS se obtuvo de una base de datos específica, incluyendo presentación clínica, bioquímica, radiología preoperatoria, abordaje quirúrgico y resultados de los pacientes. Se efectuó una revisión extensa de la literatura para efectuar comparaciones con otras publicaciones.
Resultados
Durante un periodo de 2 años, 9 pacientes fueron tratados mediante paratiroidectomía por VATS debido a un pHPT esporádico, de los cuales 5 presentaban pHPT persistente después del fracaso de una paratiroidectomía por cervicotomía, mientras que los 4 restantes no habían sido operados previamente de cirugía paratiroidea. El tiempo medio operatorio fue de 101 minutos (rango 60‐160). Ocho pacientes se curaron bioquímicamente, sin ninguna complicación mayor. Un paciente precisó conversión a una esternotomía media para extirpar un timoma que había sido un falso positivo en la radiología preoperatoria.
Conclusión
La paratiroidectomía por VATS es una intervención efectiva, segura y bien tolerada para la extirpación de un adenoma ectópico mediastínico, siempre y cuando se disponga de radiología preoperatoria adecuada, equipo multidisciplinar y experiencia.
The authors' unit recently adopted a thoracoscopic approach to mediastinal parathyroidectomy. Unit data for their case series of thoracoscopic parathyroidectomies are reviewed here, including preoperative workup and operative findings.
Recommended approach to mediastinal adenomas
The ZnWO4 crystal scintillator has unique features that make it very promising to realize a pioneering experiment to pursue Dark Matter investigation with the directionality technique. In particular ...in this detector the light output and the scintillation pulse shape for heavy particles (p, α, nuclear recoils) depend on the direction of the impinging particle with respect to the crystal axes, while the response to γ/β radiation is isotropic. The anisotropy of the light output can be considered to point out the presence in the diurnal counting rate of a Dark Matter signal produced by candidate particle inducing just nuclear recoils. In addition this crystal detector has also other important characteristics for a Dark Matter experiment: high light output, high level of radiopurity. In this paper the present performances of the developed ZnWO4 crystal scintillator will be summarized together with the possible future improvements. Some reachable sensitivities – under given assumptions – in the investigation of DM candidate particles with the directionality technique will also be addressed.
The statistical properties of wall pressure fluctuations generated on a rigid flat plate by a tangential incompressible single stream jet are investigated experimentally. The study is carried out at ...moderate Reynolds number and for different distances between the nozzle axis and the flat plate. The overall aerodynamic behaviour is described through hot wire anemometer measurements, providing the effect of the plate on the mean and fluctuating velocity. The pressure field acting on the flat plate was measured by cavity-mounted microphones, providing point-wise pressure signals in the stream-wise and span-wise directions. Statistics of the wall pressure fluctuations are determined in terms of time-domain and Fourier-domain quantities and a parametric analysis is conducted in terms of the main geometrical length scales. Possible scaling laws of auto-spectra and coherence functions are presented and implications for theoretical modelling are discussed.

This is the first report on somatic embryogenesis in common ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.). Experiments on somatic embryogenesis induction were carried out on zygotic embryos at different phases of ...development and maturation. The embryo axes were isolated and cultured on media containing different plant growth regulators (PGRs). Embryogenic tissues were obtained from embryos collected at an incomplete maturation phase and cultured on a modified Murashige and Skoog medium containing 8.8 μM 2, 4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and 4.4 μM benzyl-adenine (BA). Embryos isolated from seeds at an advanced stage of maturation showed only organogenetic phenomena. Embryogenic tissues were successfully subcultured and multiplied on medium containing a reduced concentration of PGRs. After their isolation, somatic embryos were induced to develop and mature by transfer to PGR-free medium and subsequent culture on medium containing 0.1 μM BA. Somatic embryos developed completely and also germinated spontaneously. Embryo germination and conversion were significantly improved when subjected to a period of storage at 4°C and transplant onto woody plant medium. Plantlets were successfully transferred to soil and acclimatized in a “misted” greenhouse.

The DAMA/LIBRA experiment is running at LNGS; it has a sensitive mass of about 250 kg highly radiopure NaI(Tl) and it is mainly devoted to the investigation of Dark Matter (DM) particles in the ...Galactic halo by exploiting the model independent DM annual modulation signature. The present DAMA/LIBRA experiment and the former DAMA/NaI one (the first generation experiment having an exposed mass of about 100 kg) have released so far results corresponding to a total exposure of 1.17 ton × yr, collected over 13 annual cycles. They provide a model independent evidence of the presence of DM particles in the galactic halo at 8.9 σ C.L. Some obtained results are shortly summarized and future perspectives mentioned.
