The paper discusses aspects of cooking pottery technology and operation through observations made in a series of experiments, utilizing the results of archaeological ceramic analysis in Neolithic ...northern Greece. The first stage of experiments focused on the experimental manufacture of three types of cooking pots, following the Neolithic techniques, from raw material processing to firing. In the second stage the pots were used in cooking performances, using structures, fuel and contents identified in the archaeological record. The qualitative data generated allow for testing a series of archaeological assumptions on ceramic technology, particularly vessel building and firing, along with the effects of cooking on pots. Moreover, experimental cooking provided insight to the relations between the different participant parts, highlighting the pivotal relation of cooking pots to fuel and different cooking modes. This pilot study aspires to endorse ceramicists to refine protocols for future experiments and analyses on cooking technologies.
The present work represents the first archaeometric study of pottery from central Epirus (Prefecture of Ioannina). It is combining the macroscopic examination of a large ceramic body, and the ...petrographic analysis of 104 samples from Late Bronze Age-Early Iron Age handmade pottery from Liatovouni in the Konitsa region, and Krya in the Ioannina Basin. For comparative reasons, 27 samples from a number of sites in the Ioannina Basin were also examined microscopically. The study provides new information regarding the potential provenance and technology of manufacture of ceramic vessels in the study region. Although local preferences in pottery recipes and their correlation to specific wares are apparent, ceramic production in the region is characterized by a shared knowledge of materials, processes and techniques, pointing to contacts not only with neighboring sites, but with areas further afield.

Review of the quantitative, technological, typological, functional and contextual data ...suggest that Early Neolithic pottery was most probably a regular component of material culture. Thus, in contrast with the highly favoured hypothesis that Early Neolithic pots were used mainly for cult-related or socially related prospects, it is argued that pottery had, since this early period, a variety of functions. It is very probable that some vessels were used in ceremonies or were high-status objects. The majority of vessels, however, had an active role in daily life concerning the storage and transportation of supplies, the preparation of food (most probably excluding cooking) and the treatment of other raw materials. /// Στο άρθρο αυτό συζητούνται οι χρήσεις ϰαι η οσότητα τ των ϰεϱαμιϰών σϰευών της Αϱχαιότεϱης Νεολιθιϰής, στην Ελλάδα. Η εργασία βασίζεται στη μελέτη ενόϛ μεγάλου δείγματοϛ κεραμεικών από τη Μακεεονία και Θράκή, το οποίο καλύπει όλη την διάρκεια τηϛ Νεολιθικήϛ περιόδου. Η μακροσκοπική μελέτη του υλικού συμπληρώθηκε με μικροσκοπική εξέταση (ηλεκτρονική μικροσκοπία σαρώσεωϛ (SEM) και πετρογραϕική ανάλυση) και μεδοκιμέϛ επανοπτήσεωϛ των δειγμάτων. Τα αποτελέσματα συγκρίνονται με τα δεδομένα από άλλεϛ τεχνολογικέϛ αναλύσειϛ των νεολιθικών αγγείων τηϛ βόρειαϛ Ελλάδαϛ. This article presents the aims and main results of an interdisciplinary research programme devoted to the black-on-red painted pottery characteristic of the end of the Late Neolithic ...(4800/4700-3900/3800 BC) in north Greece. The macroscopic study makes it possible to distinguish four pottery groups covering east Macedonia and Thrace, the middle and upper valley of the Strymon, central Macedonia and west Macedonia. The more thoroughgoing study of the first group, the best documented of the four, involved a comparison of the chemical compositions of the pottery fabrics with those of the local deposits, and suggests the existence of at least four production sites in west Macedonia. In one case, it is virtually certain that one and the same source of clay was exploited, the precise location of which remains to be determined.
L'article présente les objectifs et les principaux résultats d'un programme de recherches pluridisciplinaires consacré aux poteries à décor peint noir sur rouge, caractéristiques de la fin du Néolithique Récent (4800/4700-3900/3800 av. J.-C.) en Grèce du Nord. L'étude macroscopique permet de distinguer quatre faciès céramiques couvrant, respectivement, la Macédoine orientale et la Thrace, la moyenne et haute vallée de la Struma, la Macédoine centrale et la Macédoine occidentale. L'étude plus approfondie du premier faciès, qui est le mieux documenté des quatre, au moyen d'une comparaison entre les compositions chimiques des pâtes céramiques et celles de sédiments locaux, suggère l'existence d'au moins quatre espaces de productions différents en Macédoine orientale. Dans un cas, l'on est pratiquement certain qu'il y a eu exploitation d'une seule et même source d'argile, dont l'emplacement exact reste à préciser.
Το άρθρο αυτό παρουσιάζει τους σκοπούς και τα κύρια αποτελέσματα ενός διατμηματικού ερευνητικού προγράμματος για τη μελέτη της κεραμικής με διακόσμηση «μελανού επί ερυθρού», ένα χαρακτηριστικό της Νεότερης Νεολιθικής περίοδο (4800/4700 -3900/3800 π.Χ.) στην βόρεια Ελλάδα. Από την μακροσκοπική μελέτη μπορούμε να ξεχωρίσουμε τέσσερις τύπους κεραμικής, που καλύπτουν την ανατολική Μακεδονία και τη Θράκη, την Μέση και την άνω κοιλάδα του Στρυμώνα, την κεντρική Μακεδονία και την δυτική Μακεδονία. Η εκτενέστερη μελέτη του πρώτου τύπου, που τεκμηριώνεται καλύτερα από τους άλλους τρεις, με την συγκριτική μελέτη των χημικών συστατικών των πηλών και των τοπικών χωμάτων, υποδηλώνει την ύπαρξη τουλάχιστον τεσσάρων παραγωγικών χώρων στην ανατολική Μακεδονία. Σε μια περίπτωση, είμαστε σχεδόν βέβαιοι για την χρήση και την εκμετάλλευση ίδιας πηγής πηλού, της οποίας η θέση μένει να εξακριβωθεί.
Η παρούσα εργασία συζητά τα αποτελέσματα της τεχνολογικής ανάλυσης της κεραμεικής από τη Νεολιθική θέση της Μάκρης, στη Θράκη. Συγκεκριμένα, παρουσιάζονται οι διάφορες κατηγορίες υλικών που ...χρησιμοποιήθηκαν για την κατασκευή των αγγείων και συζητούνται οι πιθανοί χώροι προέλευσης των μη-πλαστικών προσμείξεων καθώς και οι τρόποι καθαρισμού του πηλού. Συζητούνται οι τεχνικές που χρησιμοποιήθηκαν για την κατασκευή των αγγείων και οι διάφοροι τρόποι επεξεργασίας της επιφάνειας των κεραμεικών. Συζητούνται επίσης οι συνθήκες όπτησης, οι πιθανοί συσχετισμοί ανάμεσα στις κατηγορίες υλικών και στις κεραμεικές κατηγορίες καθώς και η καταλληλότητα των αγγείων για μαγειρική χρήση. Η εργασία ολοκληρώνεται με τη σύγκριση της κεραμεικής τεχνολογίας της Μάκρης με αυτήν των άλλων σύγχρονων Νεολιθικών κεραμεικών συνόλων.
Cet article traite des résultats de l'étude technologique de la céramique recueillie dans les fouilles récentes du site du Néolithique Moyen de Makri (Thrace). L'analyse est fondée sur une étude macroscopique du matériel, un examen microscopique de lames minces et un test de recuisson. Les différents groupes de fabriques sont présentés, et des questions concernant les diverses pâtes, l'ajout de dégraissant ainsi que le lavage de l'argile sont traitées. Les techniques de fabrication des potiers de Makri, la nature des revêtements de surface et les conditions de cuisson sont étudiées. Le lien entre les groupes de pâtes et les catégories de vases, ainsi que la possibilité d'utilisation des récipients pour la cuisson des aliments sont examinés. Pour finir, la technologie céramique des vases de Makri est comparée à celle des autres ensembles néolithiques contemporains.
This article discusses the results of the technological study of the pottery from the recently excavated Middle Neolithic site of Makri, in Thrace. The analysis is based on macroscopic study of the material, microscopic examination of thin sections and a refî- ring test. The various fabric groups used for the manufacture of the vessels are presented and questions concerning the différent fabric groups, the addition of temper and refining of clay, are discussed. The manufacturing techniques used by the Makri potters, the nature of surface coatings and fîring conditions, are studied. The corrélation between the fabric groups and the vessel catégories as well as the suitability of pots for cooking, is examined. Finally, the ceramic technology of the Makri vessels is compared with the technology of other contemporary Neolithic assemblages.
