L. contains more than 100 phytocannabinoids that can interact with cannabinoid receptors CB
and CB
. None of the cannabinoid receptor ligands is entirely CB
- or CB
-specific. The effects of ...cannabinoids therefore differ not just because of different potency at cannabinoid receptors but also because they can interact with other non-CB
and non-CB
targets, such as TRPV1, GPR55, and GPR119. The most studied phytocannabinoid is Δ
-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is a partial agonist at both cannabinoid receptors, but its psychotomimetic effect is produced primarily via activation of the CB
receptor, which is strongly expressed in the central nervous system, with the noteworthy exception of the brain stem. Although acute cognitive and other effects of THC are well known, the risk of irreversible neuropsychological effects of THC needs further research to elucidate the association. Unlike THC, phytocannabinoid cannabidiol (CBD) does not appear to have psychotomimetic effects but may interact with some of the effects of THC if taken concomitantly. CBD administered orally has recently undergone well-controlled clinical trials to assess its safety in the treatment of paediatric epilepsy syndromes. Their findings point to increased transaminase levels as a safety issue that calls for postmarketing surveillance for liver toxicity. The aim of this review is to summarise what is known about acute and chronic toxicological effects of both compounds and address the gaps in knowledge about the safety of exogenous cannabinoids that are still open.
Purpose: The article addresses reading as a physical engagement, inscribed in space and carrying many social connotations. It analyses reading as an embodied and social practice, and focuses on the way these two dimensions relate to each other and determine the reading experience.
Methodology/approach: We used the focus group method and talked to 36 students from six European countries, focusing on the effect or the role that the type of the text, the purpose of reading and the reading device play in selecting reading environments. We talked to 21 females and 15 males from various (under)graduate programmes with mean age 21,5.
Results: Far from expressing indifference, participants turned out to be very perceptible and sensitive towards their reading environments. Most frequently, they mentioned home, libraries and other public spaces, such as coffee shops or parks, as places where people often read, even though these are not explicitly dedicated to reading. The article reports on the emergent trends and discusses the potential implications for research and practice.
Research limitations: The sample was small; main challenge was group dynamics and non-verbal communication.
Originality/practical implications: Different from the prevailing approaches to reading, which tend to study the reading mind as if temporarily detached from all stimuli in the physical environment, this study shows how the latter is exactly what should not be ignored – neither in practice nor in academic research.
The paper presents the findings of the first large-scale survey on post-mortem organ donation among the general Slovenian population. It focuses on the reported donation willingness, the barriers to ...joining the register of organ donors and the position towards consent to donate organs of deceased relatives.
A face-to-face survey was conducted on a probability sample of 1,076 Slovenian residents between October and December 2017. The performed analyses included estimations of means and proportions for target variables, an evaluation of between-group differences and a partial proportional odds model to study the relations between organ donation willingness and socio-demographic characteristics.
The mean reported willingness to donate one's own organs after death was 3.77 on a 5-point scale, with less than a third of respondents claiming to be certainly willing. Only 6% of those at least tentatively willing to donate organs were certain to join the register of organ donors in the future. The most frequently reported barriers to registration were unfamiliarity with the procedure and a lack of considering it beforehand. The reported willingness to donate organs of a deceased relative strongly depended on the knowledge of the relative's wishes, yet 80% of the respondents did not discuss their wishes with any family members.
The findings confirm the gap between the reported donation willingness and joining the register of donors. Future post-mortem organ donation strategies need to consider socio-demographic and attitudinal factors of donation willingness and help stimulate the communication about organ donation wishes between family members.
Conventional wisdom has it that the sciences, properly pursued, constitute a pure, value-free method of obtaining knowledge about the natural world. In light of the social and normative dimensions of ...many scientific debates, Helen Longino finds that general accounts of scientific methodology cannot support this common belief. Focusing on the notion of evidence, the author argues that a methodology powerful enough to account for theories of any scope and depth is incapable of ruling out the influence of social and cultural values in the very structuring of knowledge. The objectivity of scientific inquiry can nevertheless be maintained, she proposes, by understanding scientific inquiry as a social rather than an individual process. Seeking to open a dialogue between methodologists and social critics of the sciences, Longino develops this concept of contextual empiricism in an analysis of research programs that have drawn criticism from feminists. Examining theories of human evolution and of prenatal hormonal determination of gender-role behavior, of sex differences in cognition, and of sexual orientation, the author shows how assumptions laden with social values affect the description, presentation, and interpretation of data. In particular, Longino argues that research on the hormonal basis of sex-differentiated behavior involves assumptions not only about gender relations but also about human action and agency. She concludes with a discussion of the relation between science, values, and ideology, based on the work of Habermas, Foucault, Keller, and Haraway.
In this book (' The Spaces of Slovenian Literature'), a team of researchers from the ZRC SAZU and the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana led by Marko Juvan develops a new discipline, which is formed at the ...intersection between the analysis of the literary system and geography and relies on geographic information systems. Based on the spatial humanities approach presented in the introductory chapters, the following analyses, thematic maps and graphs try to explain how the “national space” was formed both ideologically and materially due to the interaction between geographical factors and literary practices in Slovenian from 1780 to 1940. The argument is based on spatial statistical analysis of data sets of biographies of literary actors, development of the press, publishing, literary clubs and theaters, the places represented in historical novels, and a constellation of memorial objects and designations dedicated to Slovenian writers. Systemic treatment is supplemented with discussions on the depicted and living spaces of selected writers from the 17th to the 21st century.
