OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of allergic rhinitis on the success of the operation in chronic otitis surgery by using score for allergic rhinitis (SFAR). ...MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the present study; 121 patients, who underwent type 1 tympanoplasty were examined retrospectively. SFAR of all patients were recorded. The graft success rates of 26 patients with allergic rhinitis (AR) and 95 patients with no allergic rhinitis group (NAR) were compared. RESULTS: While the graft success rate in NAR group was 89.5%, this rate was 80.8% in the AR group. However, the difference between groups was not statistically significant (p = 0.311). CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that allergic rhinitis decreases the graft success rate of the pathologies occurring in eustachian tube, middle ear and mastoid although statistically significant difference wasn't found. Prospective studies with larger patient groups are required in order to evaluate this pathology.

A serious chronic disease obesity is currently a significant risk factor. It is involved in the creation and development of a range of metabolic disorders. Obesity is characterized by weight gain over the limit. Other features include an increased amount of body fat and its accumulation in the abdomen. Body composition was evaluated in 610 healthy subjects in regular check-ups. It was done by measuring body weight. The proportion of body fat and its distribution was performed by the method of measuring body bioimpedance. The results, pointed out the need to measure not only weight, but also to make adjustment for waist circumference and body fat. After completing the adjustment there was a decrease in the number of people with overweight and obesity. In those people an increase in the proportion of lean body tissue can be assumed.

BACKGROUND: Latitude gradients and secular trends in Europe and North America have been found in the male-female ratio at birth (M/F: male births divided by total births) which approximates 0.515. ...METHODS: Annual national data for Yugoslavia and the post-Yugoslavia States for male and female live births were obtained from the World Health Organisation and analysed with contingency tables. RESULTS: This study analysed 22,020,729 live births. There was a increasing trend in M/F prior to the breakup of the former Yugoslavia (1950-1990, p = 0.002), followed by a decreasing trend after 1990 (p = 0.02). A latitude gradient was also noted, with more males being born in southern, warmer latitudes (p < 0.0001). There was an overall excess of 42,753 male births based on an anticipated M/F of 0.515. CONCLUSION: M/F is decreasing in this region, similar to the rest of Europe and North America. A latitude gradient is also present with more males being born in warmer (more Southern) latitudes (p < 0.0001), even in this small region and over the short time-frame studied.

V průměru za 4,9 roku u mužů a 5,5 roku u žen následovalo 35,1 % nádorů kůže a melanom, 16,9 % nádorů trávicích, 13 % dýchacích a 8,4 % močových cest. Očekávaný nízký počet pokročilých klinických stadií u následných nádorů se nepotvrdil: u mužů zahrnoval 43,8 % nádorů dutiny ústní, 41,5 % dýchacích, 34,2% trávicích, 10,6 % močových cest a 15,7 % pohlavních orgánů; u žen 39,4 % dýchacích, 30,6 % močových, 30 % trávicích cest a 28,2 % pohlavních orgánů, 25 % prsů, 25 % dutiny ústní. Bohužel mnoho klinických stadií nebylo v registru nahlášeno. Před následnými leukemiemi bylo nejvíce primárních karcinomů kůže a melanomu u 43,6 % případů jako ukazatel maligního stavu. Do října 2007 přežívalo u mužů jen 12,4 % primárních a 10,3 % následných leukemií, respektive 19,7 % a 14 % u žen. Kolik dalších novotvarů se vyskytne u osmi tisíc přežívajících s leukemií, očekávaných v roce 2015? Rozbory vícečetných novotvarů by mohly osvětlit mechanizmy jejich vzniku a poskytnout náhled na dispenzární péči a preventivní opatření, ze kterých budou mít prospěch rostoucí počty onkologicky nemocných v remisi.
A total of 30,166 cases of leukemia, based on the Czech Cancer Registry in 1976–2005, there were notificated 3,937 multiple cases associated with the ocurrence of other neoplasms. Of them there were 2,450 (62.2 %) in males and 1,487 (37.8 %) in females, i.e. 14.7 % cases in males and 11 % in females of total registered leukemia. There were diagnosed 2,064 other neoplasms after 1,715 primary leukemias and 2,642 other primary neoplasms before 2,222 subsequent leukemias. A total of 14 Czech regions were distributed 35.5 % multiple leukemias in the three regions (Southern and Northern Moravia, Prague). In the average interval 4.9 years in males and 5.5 years in females followed 35.1 % cancer of skin and melanoma, 16.9 % digestive, 13 % respiratory and 8.4 % urinary system. The expected low representation of advanced clinical stages in subsequent cancers was not confirmed: in males 43.8 % cancer of oral cavity, 41.5 % respiratory, 34.2 % digestive, 10.6 % urinary and 15.7 % genital organs; in females 39.4 % respiratory, 30.6 % urinary, 30 % digestive and 28.2 % genital organs, 25 % breast, 25 % oral cavity. Unfortunatelly a lot of clinical stages were not registered. Before the subsequent leukemias the most frequent were 43.6 % primary cancers of skin and melanoma as a sign of malignant status. Up to October 2007 in males survived only 12.4 % of primary and 10.3 % subsequent leukemias, respective 19.7 % and 14 % in females. How many other neoplasms will be diagnosed among 8,000 surviving with leukemia, estimated in the Czech Republic in 2015? The analyses of multiple neoplasms should be possible to illuminate the mechanisms of susceptibility to multiple cancers and provide insights into the long-term medical care and preventive interventions that will benefit the growing population of cancer survivors. of subsequent cancers.

BACKGROUND: The male-female ratio at birth (M/F: male births divided by total births), which is anticipated to approximate 0.515, has been shown to exhibit latitude gradients and secular trends. ...METHODS: Annual national data for male and female live births for the 15 countries that comprise the former Soviet Union were obtained from the World Health Organisation for the period 1980-2009 (115,167,569 total live births) and analysed with contingency tables. Spearman correlation was also carried out to compare percentage annual gross domestic product growth (GDP%--downloaded from the World Bank) and M/F. In this context, GDP% is used as a measure for economic hardship or wellbeing within the populace. RESULTS: There have been overall highly significant secular increases in M/F (p < 0.0001) in the countries and regions investigated. M/F is significantly lower in the three more northern regions (Russian Federation, Baltic States and Central Asia. M/F 0.51324, 0.51335-0.51314) than the two more southern regions (Southern Caucasus and Eastern Europe. M/F 0.51654, 0.51635-0.51672). There was a male excess of 113,818 live births. There was a significant positive correlation between GDP% and M/F for Armenia, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan. There was a significant negative correlation in Estonia. CONCLUSION: Previous studies have shown that improving socioeconomic conditions increase M/F, and the converse has also been demonstrated. This is a potential influence in this geographical area since this region has relatively recently emerged from communist rule and experienced an overall economic upturn, but is only partially supported using GDP%. Another factor may be the selective termination of female pregnancies. The latitude gradient parallels that of neighbouring Europe but no theory has been put forward to convincingly explain this finding to date.
