ABSTRACT
We report on multifrequency radio observations of the new magnetar Swift J1818.0−1607, following it for more than one month with high cadence. The observations commenced less than 35 h after ...its registered first outburst. We obtained timing, polarization, and spectral information. Swift J1818.0−1607 has an unusually steep spectrum for a radio emitting magnetar and also has a relatively narrow and simple pulse profile. The position angle swing of the polarization is flat over the pulse profile, possibly suggesting that our line of sight grazes the edge of the emission beam. This may also explain the steep spectrum. The spin evolution shows large variation in the spin-down rate, associated with four distinct timing events over the course of our observations. Those events may be related to the appearance and disappearance of a second pulse component. The first timing event coincides with our actual observations, while we did not detect significant changes in the emission properties that could reveal further magnetospheric changes. Characteristic ages inferred from the timing measurements over the course of months vary by nearly an order of magnitude. A longer-term spin-down measurement over approximately 100 d suggests a characteristic age of about 500 yr, larger than previously reported. Though Swift J1818.0−1607 could still be one of the youngest neutron stars (and magnetars) detected so far, we caution using the characteristic age as a true-age indicator given the caveats behind its calculation.

This article examines the role of secrecy in William Shakespeare and George Wilkins' Pericles, showing how secrets are used to probe wider questions of sexuality, time and social power. Secrets can ...have a poisonous influence on societal and familial relationships in this play, but they also possess beneficial curative and healing properties that are potentially transformative of the social body. Drawing on the work of modern theorists of secrecy including Georg Simmel, Jacques Derrida and Anne Dufourmantelle, I argue that secrecy in Pericles has a complexity which goes beyond the simple opposition of concealment and revelation. Secrets reveal and conceal at the same time, in ways that may seem paradoxical, just as they simultaneously bind people together and separate them. They are disruptive and unpredictable, pushing past desires for control and order. Political authority, in Shakespeare's day as in our own, often involves keeping secrets. But as my reading of the play demonstrates, secrets can undo power structures and disrupt the orderly temporal patterns of our lives.
The sixteenth-century reckoning with extra-European peoples and cultures occurred at precisely the same moment that humanists were increasingly preoccupied with the daily life, material culture, and ...lived religion of classical antiquity. Leading figures in sixteenth-century antiquarianism took an abiding interest in ethnographic accounts of contemporary peoples and even produced such accounts. This article examines how sixteenth-century readers and scholars placed bodies of literature on ancient and modern customs in dialogue with one another. While scholars have long appreciated that ethnographic and travel writing were deeply mediated by the study of antiquity, that mediation cut both ways. This article addresses the question of how ethnographic descriptions of modern peoples shaped sixteenth-century understandings of the customs and lived religion of antiquity. The writings of merchants and humanists testify to the ways in which the practices of ethnographic writing helped to shape travellers' and readers' appreciation of the cultural alterity of classical antiquity.
Growing evidences show that matrix metalloproteinase 1 (MMP1) plays important roles in tumorigenesis and cancer metastasis.
MMP1
−1607 1G>2G is a single nucleotide polymorphism in the promoter region ...of MMP1 and affects MMP1 production. Analysis of previous studies on the association of −1607 1G>2G polymorphism with different cancer types remained to be illustrated. To further assess the effect of −1607 1G>2G polymorphism on cancer risk, we performed this meta-analyses, up to September 8, 2014, of 10,640 cases and 10,915 controls from 42 published case–control designed studies. Statistical analyses were performed using STATA 11.0 software. Crude odds ratios (ORs) with 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) were used to assess the strength of associations. ORs with 95 % CIs for the polymorphism
MMP1
−1607 1G>2G and cancer were estimated using fixed and random effects models when appropriate. Significantly increased risks were found in overall under the models of 2G vs.1G, 2G2G vs. 1G1G, 2G2G/1G2G vs. 1G1G, and 2G2G vs. 2G1G/1G1G. Significantly elevated risks were observed in colorectal adenoma under the models of 2G vs. 1G, 2G2G vs. 1G1G, 2G2G/1G2G vs. 1G1G, and 2G2G vs. 2G1G/1G1G and lung cancer and head and neck cancer under the models of 2G vs. 1G. We found that significantly elevated risks were observed in Asian population and hospital-based studies in most comparison models tested. Thus, this meta-analysis indicates that the polymorphism
MMP1
−1607 1G>2G is significantly associated with a significantly increased risk of cancers and may provide evidence-based medical certificate to study the cancer susceptibility.
We present the results of a 430-MHz survey for pulsars conducted during the upgrade to the 305-m Arecibo radio telescope. Our survey covered a total of 1147 deg2 of sky using a drift-scan technique. ...We detected 33 pulsars, 10 of which were not known prior to the survey observations. The highlight of the new discoveries is PSR J0407+1607, which has a spin period of 25.7 ms, a characteristic age of 1.5 Gyr and is in a 1.8-yr orbit about a low-mass (>0.2 M⊙) companion. The long orbital period and small eccentricity (e = 0.0009) make the binary system an important new addition to the ensemble of binary pulsars suitable to test for violations of the strong equivalence principle. We also report on our initially unsuccessful attempts to detect optically the companion to J0407+1607, which imply that its absolute visual magnitude is >12.1. If, as expected on evolutionary grounds, the companion is an He white dwarf, our non-detection implies a cooling age of least 1 Gyr.
