Abstract
We report on the discovery of a transiting Earth-sized (0.95
R
⊕
) planet around an M3.5 dwarf star at 57 pc, EPIC 249631677. The planet has a period of ∼3.14 days, i.e., ∼
π
, with an ...installation of 7.45 S
⊕
. The detection was made using publicly available data from K2's Campaign 15. We observed three additional transits with SPECULOOS Southern and Northern Observatories, and a stellar spectrum from Keck/HIRES, which allowed us to validate the planetary nature of the signal. The confirmed planet is well suited for comparative terrestrial exoplanetology. While exoplanets transiting ultracool dwarfs present the best opportunity for atmospheric studies of terrestrial exoplanets with the James Webb Space Telescope, those orbiting mid-M dwarfs within 100 pc such as EPIC 249631677b will become increasingly accessible with the next generation of observatories.
This microhistory investigates the famous and scandalous 1731 trial in which Catherine Cadière, a young woman in the south of France, accused her Jesuit confessor, Jean-Baptiste Girard, of ...seduction, heresy, abortion, and bewitchment. Generally considered to be the last witchcraft trial in early modern France, the Cadière affair was central to the volatile politics of 1730s France, a time when magistrates and lawyers were seeking to contain clerical power.
Mita Choudhury’s examination of the trial sheds light on two important phenomena with broad historical implications: the questioning of traditional authority and the growing disquiet about the role of the sacred and divine in French society. Both contributed to the French people’s ever-increasing disenchantment with the church and the king. Choudhury builds her story through an extensive examination of archival material, including trial records, pamphlets, periodicals, and unpublished correspondence from witnesses.
The Wanton Jesuit and the Wayward Saint offers new insights into how the eighteenth-century public interpreted the accusations and why the case consumed the public for years, developing from a local sex scandal to a referendum on religious authority and its place in French society and politics.
As the front of the northeastward-growth region of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau since the Cenozoic, arcuate fold-and-thrust belts are the main features of local tectonic deformation. However, the ...formation mechanism of these arcuate structures is still an open question. We present 3D finite-element models with elasto-plastic rheology to understand the formation-evolution of arcuate folds here comprising real regional fault-zones including the Haiyuan, Xiang Shan–Tianjing Shan, Yantong Shan, and Niushou Shan faults since ∼10 Ma. The reference-model equivalent-plastic-strain (EPS) concentration zones develop outwardly-NE in spatio-temporal sequence, with development geometry and timing in good agreement with the geologic fault-zone structures. Our reference-model-based sensitivity analysis suggest that the horizontal northeastward compression of the region being bounded by a frictional vicinity (rigid Alxa and Ordos blocks hindering the advancement) have the dominant control on the formation and evolution of these arcuate fold-and-thrust belts perpendicular to the contraction axis. In contrast, the likely-small rotations imprinted by the Ordos and Alxa blocks and the minor shearing of the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau, have only secondary effects. An additional, generic sensitivity analysis reveals that the folds’ horizontal curvature per unit horizontal shortening-displacement increases with the friction on the bounding vicinity, and this result could be considered for other scenarios of Earth and other planets. Historical regional earthquakes of M > 6 are mostly located in the simulated EPS concentration zones: the 1920 Haiyuan and 1709 Zhongwei earthquakes occurred on the Haiyuan and Xiang Shan–Tianjing Shan faults, respectively, well correlated with our model high-EPS concentration zones.
•3D elastoplastic models simulated the arcuate structural belts formation in the NE margin of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau.•Tectonic shortening dominates the development of plasticity bands, while rotations and shearing have secondary effects.•A higher frictional coefficient leads to higher curvature of arcuate deformation bands.•EPS concentration zones in the study area are correlated with historical earthquakes, forming a local seismogenic zone.
Hammerschmidt focuses on Jane Collier's copy of a letter in the Richardson correspondence. It is well known that Samuel Richardson developed extensive correspondence networks in both fact and fiction ...throughout his life. Much of the earliest surviving correspondence deals with his first work of fiction, the self-consciously novel and novelistic Pamela (1740). In fact, it was probably in response to the success of this novel and to the correspondence it generated that Richardson began to collect and keep copies of the letters he wrote and received.
Abstract
We release the first grid of stellar limb-darkening coefficients (LDCs) and intensity profiles (IPs) computed by the consortium of the PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars (PLATO), ...the next medium-class (M3) mission under development by the European Space Agency to be launched in 2026. We have performed spectral synthesis with
TurboSpectrum
on a grid of
MARCS
model atmospheres. Finally, we adopted
ExoTETHyS
to convolve the high-resolution spectra (
R
= 2 × 10
5
) with the state-of-the-art response functions for all the PLATO cameras, and computed the LDCs that best approximate the convolved IPs. In addition to the PLATO products, we provide new LDCs and IPs for the Kepler mission, based on the same grid of stellar atmospheric models and calculation procedures. The Lenglongling fault (LLLF) is located along the northeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau and forms a part of the Tianzhu seismic gap along the Qilian‐Haiyuan fault zone. Little is known about ...the recurrence of large earthquakes along the LLLF nor the associated seismic hazards of the gap. Here the six most recent surface rupturing paleoearthquakes of the LLLF are revealed by measurement of offset landforms, trench excavations, and radiocarbon dating. They are labeled E1–E6 from youngest to oldest, and their timings are constrained to the following time ranges: 636–498 to present, 2951–1155, 4016–3609, 5325–4476, 7284–6690, and 8483–7989 years BP, respectively. The LLLF displays evidence of fresh, recent surface rupture, and the trench sections reveal that the fault ruptured to the ground surface during the most recent event. Based on this fresh surface rupture and historical earthquake records, the latest event E1 was most likely the 1927 M8.0 Gulang earthquake. In conjunction with previous studies, Gulang earthquake might be a complicated event characterized by the combined rupture of both strike‐slip and thrust faults. The average recurrence interval of the six paleoearthquakes is 1643 ± 568 years, and the coefficient of variation is 0.34, indicating that the LLLF follows a quasiperiodic recurrence model. Based on this new understanding of the last event, the LLLF may not be a part of the Tianzhu seismic gap. However, an earthquake of up to MW7.6 could still rupture the gap sections composed of the Jinqianghe, Maomaoshan, and Laohushan faults.
