The article deals with the national epic as a specific generic constellation that emerges around 1800. Conceived to be the manifestation of a nation's identity – its ‚spirit‘ –, the national epic serves as one of , the textual cornerstones of contemporary nationalism. The will to ‚own‘ an epic, become a compulsion among the European nations. Contemporary genre theories that are debated internationally, help to provide the epic with its exceptional aura, at the same time serving as models for the establishment of such texts. Thus, the nationalist epic must, quite ironically, be conceived as a European phenomenen, resulting from transnational cultural transfer. First, the article sketches some key aspects of contemporary theories of the genre; second, it presents four ways of constituting a national epic outlined by these theories: finding, forging, ordering, and singing, using as examples the French Chanson de Roland, the Bohemian Manuscripts from Königinhof and Grünberg, the Finnish Kalevala, and Wilhelm Jordan's German Nibelunge.
The paper examines the influence of Adam Mickiewicz's treatise The Books and the Pilgrimage of the Polish Nation (1832) in a European context. The focus rests on a Slowak writer - L'udovit Štúr - and an author with an Ukrainian background - Nikolaj (Mykola) Kostomarov-, both of which are contextualizing Mickiewicz's sacralisation of historiography in a new way. The article highlights the construction of national identity within a historical narrative and the applied vocabulary of pilgrimage.
The translation of August Wilhelm Schlegel's lectures Ueber dramatische Kunst und Litteratur in 1814 distributed the ideas of German Romanticism in France. The reactions of the translators and first readers in Germaine de Staël's Circle of Coppet as well as the first critics by Stendhal and Charles Nodier show the difficulties of the French readers with Schlegel's fierce criticism of French classical drama and with the idea of ‚Romanticism‛ itself. The arguments of the proponents and the opponents will form the discussion of the following 20 years.
Jahrhunderts. My paper deals with the relation between metre and nation, presuming metric systems as strategies of cultural policy to found and establish traditions of national literature. From this perspective, I will discuss two cases as an example: Tiecks Minnelieder (1803) and the debate on the hexameter in the English-speaking area in the early 19th century.
This paper aims to investigate Victor Hugo's geopoetic approach of european literature. In the horizon of german-french cultural communication it focuses on the metaphorical process of territorialisation and canonisation of european literature. By the twofold interpretational turn from romanticism to orientalism, from aethetics to ideology, it examines Hugo's textual strategies of in- and exclusion of cultures, literatures and authors from the european project.
The poetology of Patrick Roth contains a close connection between Christian content and literary practice, which has not yet been precisely determined. Based on Magdalena am Grab, the
article clarifies that a Christological understanding of revelation is crucial for the literature of Patrick Roth. The revelatory experience that is shown in the story is remarkably characterized by the following three attributes: unavailability, withdrawal, and dangerousness. Beyond that,
these classical attributes of revelation shape the structure of the narrative in its entirety.
Johann Diederich Gries can be regarded as one of the firsts professional translators of literature in modern meaning, as the article
analyses on the basis of his Calderón translations. Initially, Gries had been consulted only as a helper for an adaption of Weimar's theatre under Goethe's management. Based on that, Grieß then developed an ambitious project, wich set a new high standard. The analysis
of Gries' correspondence and translation manuscripts enables an explanation of the principles and complexity of his project, of the problematic editorial situation and foreign theatrelic conventions, and of his trial to obtain the attention of the public through reviews.
How did Hindu reformers make the religion modern? Brian Hatcher argues that this is the wrong question to ask. Exploring two nineteenth-century Hindu movements, the Brahmo Samaj and the Swaminarayan ...Sampraday, he challenges the notion of religious reform.
