Many Kentuckians and fans of intercollegiate athletics are familiar with the name Jim Host. As founder and CEO of Host Communications, he was the pioneer in college sports marketing. Host's ...prevailing innovation in collegiate sports was the concept of bundled licensing, which encouraged corporate partners to become official sponsors of athletic programs across media formats. Host and his team developed the NCAA Radio Network and introduced what became known as the NCAA's Corporate Partner Program, which employed companies such as Gillette, Valvoline, Coca-Cola, and Pizza Hut to promote university athletic programs and the NCAA at large. Host was involved with the construction of Rupp Arena, the Kentucky Horse Park, and the KFC Yum! Center. But few know his full story.Changing the Game is the first complete account of the entrepreneur's professional life, detailing his achievements in sports radio, management, and broadcasting; his time in minor league baseball, real estate, and the insurance business; and his foray into Kentucky politics, including his appointments under governors Louie B. Nunn and Ernie Fletcher. This memoir provides a behind-the-scenes look at the growth of big-time athletics and offers solutions for current challenges facing college sports.
When a ten-year-old boy befriends a mysterious hobo in his southern Colorado hometown in the early 1940s, he learns about evil in his community and takes his first steps toward manhood by attempting ...to protect his new friend from corrupt officials. Though a fictional story, Alex and the Hobo is written out of the life experiences of its author, José Inez (Joe) Taylor, and it realistically portrays a boy’s coming-of-age as a Spanish-speaking man who must carve out an honorable place for himself in a class-stratified and Anglo-dominated society. In this innovative ethnography, anthropologist James Taggart collaborates with Joe Taylor to explore how Alex and the Hobo sprang from Taylor’s life experiences and how it presents an insider’s view of Mexicano culture and its constructions of manhood. They frame the story (included in its entirety) with chapters that discuss how it encapsulates notions that Taylor learned from the Chicano movement, the farmworkers’ union, his community, his father, his mother, and his religion. Taggart gives the ethnography a solid theoretical underpinning by discussing how the story and Taylor’s account of how he created it represent an act of resistance to the class system that Taylor perceives as destroying his native culture.
The Black Arts Movement (1965-76) consisted of artists across the United States deeply concerned with the relationship between politics and the black aesthetic. In Search of Our Warrior ...Mothersexamines the ways in which black women playwrights in the movement advanced feminist and womanist perspectives from within black nationalist discourses. La Donna L. Forsgren recuperates the careers, artistic theories, and dramatic contributions of four leading playwrights: Martie Evans-Charles, J.e. Franklin, Sonia Sanchez, and Barbara Ann Teer. Using original interviews, production recordings, playbills, and unpublished manuscripts, she investigates how these women, despite operating within a context that equated the collective well-being of black people with black male agency, created works that validated black women's aspirations for autonomy and explored women's roles in the struggle for black liberation. In Search of Our Warrior Mothersdemonstrates the powerful contributions of women to the creation, interpretation, and dissemination of black aesthetic theory, thus opening an interdisciplinary conversation at the intersections of theater, performance, feminist, and African American studies and identifying and critiquing the gaps and silences within these fields.

The era of persecution of the Russian Orthodox Church in the twentieth century included several waves of repression against the clergy and active laity, followed one after another. The most ...large-scale and fierce became the one that was triggered by the Great Terror of 1937–1938, which began after the issuance of the Order of the People’s Commissar of Internal Affairs of the USSR N. I. Ezhov No. 00447 of July 30, 1937. According to this docu¬ment, “the most active anti-Soviet elements,” including “church members,” were subject to repression. The order contained plans on the number of those subject to repression for each region. “Anti-Soviet elements” were divided into two categories. The first one included “all the most hostile” who were “to be shot upon consideration of their cases by troika”. The second category implied “less active, but still hostile elements”; they faced imprisonment in camps for a period of 10 years. It should be noted that the figures initially indicated in the order were eventually exceeded several times. This article presents documents (interrogation protocols, indictment, sentence and act of exe¬cution) from the investigative case of 1937, the main accused in which was Metropolitan of Sverdlovsk and Chelyabinsk Peter (Kholmogortsev), one of the leaders of the Supreme Church Council. The materials of the case are of considerable interest to researchers of the history of the Church in the Urals, although its indictment part was almost completely fabricated by the investigation. This is one of the few sources that describes the state of religious life in the Urals in the mid-1930s. The interrogation protocols list many representatives of the clergy of various orientations who served in parishes in 1936–1937. The names of the clergy are documented here, and the churches in which they served are also mentioned. This information undoubtedly requires deep critical analysis and correlation with other sources. The interlinear passages contain information about the subsequent fate of the persons mentioned, and provide some additions and clarifications. The introductory article sets out bio¬graphical information concerning the interrogated Bishop himself and a description of the archival investigative file.
