In May 1937, seventy thousand workers walked off their jobs at four large steel companies known collectively as "Little Steel." The strikers sought to make the companies retreat from decades of ...antiunion repression, abide by the newly enacted federal labor law, and recognize their union. For two months a grinding struggle unfolded, punctuated by bloody clashes in which police, company agents, and National Guardsmen ruthlessly beat and shot unionists. At least sixteen died and hundreds more were injured before the strike ended in failure. The violence and brutality of the Little Steel Strike became legendary. In many ways it was the last great strike in modern America.Traditionally the Little Steel Strike has been understood as a modest setback for steel workers, one that actually confirmed the potency of New Deal reforms and did little to impede the progress of the labor movement. However,The Last Great Striketells a different story about the conflict and its significance for unions and labor rights. More than any other strike, it laid bare the contradictions of the industrial labor movement, the resilience of corporate power, and the limits of New Deal liberalism at a crucial time in American history.

This book analyses the critical reception of Pai Hsien-yung’s Crystal Boys, one of Taiwan’s first recognized gay novels, and one which has played an important role in redefining sexual modernity and ...linking this to ongoing cultural dialogues on state building. It examines the deployment of sexuality over the past five decades in Taiwan by paying particular attention to male homosexuality and prostitution. In addition to literary and film material, the study engages a number of relevant legal cases and media reports. Through Hans Huang’s primary research and historical investigations, the book not only illuminates the construction of gendered sexual identities in Taiwanese culture but also, in a reflexive fashion, critiques the culture that produces them.
Hélène Cixous, author of over forty works of fiction, was deemed by Derrida to be the greatest living writer in French in 1990. Consistent with this evaluation, her writing is renowned for its dense ...poetical texture and lyricism. At the same time, she has been described by one of Derrida's translator's, Peggy Kamuf, as 'one of our age's greatest semi-theoreticians'. Connecting these two views, this book argues for a consideration of her texts as ‘semi-fictions’. Telling stories is, irreducibly, part of what Cixous does; it is irreducibly part of what she does. Fiction is at once the creation of an imaginary world and an ethical engagement, as intellectual as it is passionate, with the difficulties of the real. This book offers an in-depth reading of five different texts, addressing the idiomatic specificity of individual works and investigating how the textual fabric unfolds. It shows that the narrative dimension to Cixous’s writing needs to be reckoned with as a key component of the way it troubles the borders between fiction and its others. Each work is approached in relation to a particular theoretical question or discourse to explore how, in staging an encounter with something beyond itself, her fiction is the site of an active thinking.

Glen Sorestad (1937-) was born in Vancouver, British Columbia. His family moved to Saskatchewan in 1947, and he earned a Bachelor of Education degree at the University of Saskatchewan in 1963. He ...taught in Yorkton for four years before moving to Saskatoon, where he taught at the Alvin Buckwold School for two years. He then taught at Evan Hardy Collegiate from 1969 to 1981, when he quit to write full-time. He has since published numerous collections of poems, and in 2000 he became Saskatchewan's first poet laureate. The following poem was published in the autumn 1997 issue and included in the collections Today I Belong to Agnes (2000) and Leaving Holds Me Here: Selected Poems, 1975-2000 (2001), which won the Saskatoon Book Award.

Distinguished historian and civil rights activist Howard ...Ball has written dozens of books during his career, including the landmark biography of Thurgood Marshall, A Defiant Life , and the critically acclaimed Murder in Mississippi , chronicling the Mississippi Burning killings. In Taking the Fight South , arguably his most personal book, Ball focuses on six years, from 1976 to 1982, when, against the advice of friends and colleagues in New York, he and his Jewish family moved from the Bronx to Starkville, Mississippi, where he received a tenured position in the political science department at Mississippi State University. For Ball, his wife, Carol, and their three young daughters, the move represented a leap of faith, ultimately illustrating their deep commitment toward racial justice.
Ball, with breathtaking historical authority, narrates the experience of his family as Jewish outsiders in Mississippi, an unfamiliar and dangerous landscape contending with the aftermath of the civil rights struggle. Signs and natives greeted them with a humiliating and frightening message: “No Jews, Negroes, etc., or dogs welcome.” From refereeing football games, coaching soccer, and helping young black girls integrate the segregated Girl Scout troops in Starkville, to life-threatening calls from the KKK in the middle of the night, from his work for the ACLU to his arguments in the press and before a congressional committee for the extension of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, Ball takes the reader to a precarious time and place in the history of the South. He was briefly an observer but quickly became an activist, confronting white racists stubbornly holding on to a Jim Crow white supremacist past and fighting to create a more diverse, equitable, and just society.
Ball’s story is one of an imitable advocate who didn’t just observe as a passive spectator but interrupted injustice. Taking the Fight South will join the list of required books to read about the Black Lives Matter movement and the history of racism in the United States. The book will also appeal to readers interested in Judaism because of its depiction of anti-Semitism directed toward Starkville’s Jewish community, struggling to survive in the heart of the deep and very fundamentalist Protestant South.
The first International Congress of Garden Architects, organised in Paris as part of the 1937 International Exhibition of Arts and Technologies by the French Society of Garden Architects (Société ...française des architectes de jardins, SFAJ), marked the initial phase in a collective reflection on the objectives and challenges in the training of landscape architects in Europe. Following the economic, political and social crisis caused by the First World War, the crisis of 1929, and the rise of a new public demand for open spaces for leisure, sports, and recreational activities, garden architects were called on to address profound changes in the commissioning and in the typology, objectives, and scale of landscape projects. Based on original hitherto unstudied documents held in the archives of the Association Henri & Achille Duchêne this article presents the initiatives that led to the organisation of the Congress and how it made a defining contribution in the training of French landscape architects.
